I've had many bits and pieces from Hipshot over the years and I didnt ask for any of them, they were the result of enquiries, as above. Hipshot customer service is second to none and their products are very well engineered. Top! Company!

Yes indeed, it's used Trace Elliot for the likes of us...

The current products are definitely what you want.

There it is... eighth of September, 1993. Thanks, Tony.

Punk band, innit? Real deal!

And I'd agree with you. But in 40 years I've never owned a single bass that I thought lacked sufficient sustain, or had so little sustain that I decided to move it on - it's just never been an issue. Every bass I've had has been up to the job of playing a long note at the end of songs!

There's a hex screw on the front of the steel saddle, which you can't see in the pic. You undo that, manually move the brass insert to the required position (easier to slacken off the string for this), then tighten it back up. Very simple.

Quite possibly. Whatever it was, I didn't like it.

Got most of the glue off without damaging the Tolex, which was a bit of a mission. What this revealed was a number of small, shallow holes drilled in the cab at each corner - obviously at some point someone attached, or tried to attach, something to the top of the cab which was then subsequently removed. Could be part of the reason why the rubber mat was fitted. Doesn't bother me, it's part of the history... I hoovered the cobwebs out of the amp space and went round it with a damp sponge to get the dust off, and did a bit of careful hoovering inside the amp head. It looks remarkably clean in there, no burns or fraying or other stress evident - the components look like they were assembled yesterday. Pretty good for a 25-year-old amp. Now I'll go and take some gut shots. Not me, the amp...

Without an A/B comparison involving EQ curves and other scientific conditions, I can't prove otherwise. The only time I noticed a difference in tone between bridges was changing from steel to brass saddles, and the brass definitely had less bottom end and more 'twang'. Which is the very opposite of the generally-held belief and not what I wanted at all, so I changed back. Weirdly the brass saddles in the Hipshot Kickass seems to make no difference whatsoever.
-
Yes, it is good enough - I'm a big fan of doing what the hell you like with your own property. I have 'upgraded' many bridges, in fact my current #1 bass, a Jazz, has a Hipshot Kickass fitted to it. Not for any perceived (or otherwise) tonal reasons, but for aesthetic reasons, and more importantly to have more control over string spacing and therefore position of the strings over the pickup pole pieces.

Urrgh... the smell of hot rubber. You'd think I'd be into it, but I'm not. Especially when what's left is this layer of old, intractable glue. So nowwww... I'll have to get that off. D'oh!!

Umm... none. *Hides in cupboard under stairs... ew, a spider! Runs away*

OK, I need to slide out the amp head and find out when my combo was put together. My OCD demands it and so do certain other BassChatters. However, there is a thick rubber mat glued to the top, obviously to stop things from sliding around, such as an extension cab, I'm guessing. Very sensible, but it's got to come off as it's covering the plastic plugs under which lurk the screws holding the chassis in. If I can get the four corners off first I can access the screws and slide out the amp head. Then I can really get to work softening the glue with a hair dryer and get my plastic spatula under the mat without fear of overheating the amp in any way. That stuff is really on there!

True, but you can always use the tried and trusted 'fast string tickle' with the second finger to artificially extend the note, especially if the drummer is dragging out the ending somewhat... this gives you as much 'sustain' as you ever need and even gives you time to swear at the drummer, shout 'For f*ck's sake!' at everyone else and roll your eyes before the final denouément. I've never understood those who will 'upgrade' a bridge thinking it will give more sustain. In my view it does not, and why would you want it to?
-
Due to band circumstances I've not gigged it yet, but I'm lucky enough to be able to play along loudly to a recording while making changes, so at least it's not 'solo' as such.
