1. 3 or 4 for me, any less than that and the sound isn't properly full (in rock at least) and any more than that and it starts to get too busy or people are doubling up parts which sounds messy.
2. I've had quite a few offers already, still not found exactly what i'm looking for but there's certainly ones on the table i'm considering.
3. Clovers remind me very much of Sandbergs. Similar price, same shape and pickups, both look great IMO. I've never played one but from seeing them up close they look well made.
4. Interesting post, Jan. I know I get bored of things and need a change from time to time. I also find I only need one bass and since I have two good quality ones at any time, I tend to change my "spare" bass and fall in love with the new one regularly rather than set out to change my main bass specifically. A new bass is always an inspiration too, I found I wrote quite a lot of songs when I got my Warwick for example as it was my first expensive bass. New basses seem to want to be played different ways which can lead to new ideas, IME at least.
I kind of agree to some extent. It seems that a lot of players find it easier to get knowledgable about basses/gear and 'talk the talk' to other bass players about gear than it is to practise hard and reach a similarly in-depth knowledge of PLAYING a bass. I believe the description for people with 'incurable GAS' is simple... "All the gear, no idea"
I assume you've listened to my music and taken the time to learn about me by looking at the links in my sig before you say I have no idea? No? Didn't think so. I don't know if some people are deliberately offensive or just too stupid to know how to behave socially. Maybe some of us like change and would rather use a variety of gear instead of restricting ourselves for no reason. Either way, to come on a forum where so many people enjoy using different basses and make a statement like that isn't very bright. Rob, i've just been possibly offered a HH Bongo for it, only shame is that it's bright orange i've nev played one thigh and want to give them a go.
5.
I'm not at all interested in selling
Thanks Russell, it's an awesome bass, you got the order spot on.
6. I'm up for another too if one is sorted.
7. That picture really doesn't show it off very well in the crap lighting, the grain's stunning on the top. Thanks though, it really is gorgeous. Forgot to mention it has coil taps for the buckers too.
8. I'm hesitantly offering this up for trade, I really love this bass but i'm considering trading this for one of a few things. Basically looking for a MM Ray 2 pup version, Bongo 2 pup version or maybe a fretless Lightwave VL. I'll only consider 5 string models and only interested in red, black, natural or maybe White. Better pics from Russell here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=69767&hl= my computer's being repaired at the mo so I can't easily post new pictures, but I'll see what I can do on request. Scale is 34", not sure enough on what woods are used to say 100%. Electrics are a 3 band, 2 MM style pups. There's a couple of sound clips in this thread: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...Stingray+sounds (it's bass 1). I'm not at all interested in selling so no offers please. As above, only 5 string basses. I won't reply to IMs offering me cash (unless offered stupid lots of money) or basses with less or more than 5 strings as I've said quite clearly here I'm not interested. I live close to J25 on the M1, interested parties are welcome to come and try it out. I won't post something so nice.
9.
I'm still looking for a "C" any suggestions?
Surely there's a Cort that would appeal to you?
10.
Are you preferring the Musicman? This might be just a situation where you are starting to find a bass that suits you more perhaps?
That's what it is, but I used to have a Warwick and then got my 'berg J and preferred that so much I got another 'berg, now the same thing's happening again! Only difference this time is that I don't like the MM for "acoustic" style gigs so I'd need something slightly different for a less aggressive tone. Nice try, Fred. I wouldn't sell it anyway. I love that bass, it's stunning and sounds awesome, it'd have to be a trade for the right bass so I know I'm getting what I want from moving it on.
11. Didn't trace make a Perspex bass a while back? That'd fill the gap.
12. Anyone else think that it might never go away? I LOVE Sandbergs and the two I've owned have been two of the nicest basses I've ever played but GAS took me against my will and one went for a Ray a few months back. Now the other's potentially in the firing line, it's a full custom and I'll never find another like it if it goes, but the temptation to put it up for trade for a HH Ray, Bongo or fretless Lightwave fiver is getting to me. I know it's a bad idea but my damned GAS keeps telling me that the Sandberg isn't really usable as a backup because the output is so much less and I've never needed a backup bass anyway so I'm better off getting another MM or something totally different that can serve a different purpose. I'm glad I don't have amp GAS too or I would probably end up insane. I do however have crazy tuner GAS which is driving me mad.
13.
If there are no Overwaters with the specifications you want then an Overwater is not for you. The trick with getting a custom instrument how you want it is to pick a luthier who is already making something very close to it. There are plenty of custom builders out there so somewhere will be the right person to make your bass.
The whole point of custom builds is to build something that isn't already available with the desired specifications, surely. There's been some good custom builds around that are unusual for the builders, a Shuker fanned fret sticks in my head for example. Besides, the OP didn't say what specifications he wanted that weren't availabe in the for sale forum here, it could've been something simple like a nice top or board rather than something totally different.
14. If all the overwaters you've played have been comfy, go with that IMO. I like overwaters, they sound and feels great to me. Not played a W&T but if I was putting down money on a custom I'd pick the one that I've played and consistently liked.
15. Out of curiosity, why do you need more watts? Does your cab distort if you put the amp on max volume?
16. My big rig is big, loud, looks awesome and sounds incredible. It's big and heavy though. My smaller rig is still big, loud and looks awesome (though to lesser extents) and sounds incredible, it's lighter and smaller though. Between these two I'm 100% happy with my rigs. It doesn't stop me gassing after a 112 though.
17. Sandbergs can be got for a shade over a k and are lovely!
18. This is on it's way to it's new home now. Thanks for all the interest.
19. If he keeps going, he's going to end up a very talented and equally soulless musician, There's no denying that he's good, but his timing is off and he's lacking a good sense of groove. Typical "look how fast I can play", though he's so young it's probably the parents' doing this time.
20. I find rays cut through a mix great, it still wouldn't be my first choice for metal, though I love my ray 5. I have a Sandberg and it's brilliant. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone.
21. If my gear had to be cheaper than my clothes, I'd be lucky to have an encore bass, never mind an amp, I'm sure lot of people would have the same problem. Surely if someone looks a twat for not making eye contact with the audience, that's the issue? It doesn't matter what gear they're using...I get compliments on my gear and I enjoy it, it means that it's not just my playing that people enjoy, but I've obviously made wise choices on gear too. I take over £4,000 of gear to every gig (which is less than I used to) because I payed a lot of money to get a rig and basses I enjoy, I'm not going to leave that at home and have payed so much money to bring it out once every few months for a few days of recording.
22. If you're thinking of the tone of 10s, why not look at 210s too? I use 2 212s and they're nice and punchy, if you're only using one 12" speaker, you might be pushing it or your amp too hard and losing some dynamics from it.
23. I disagree that there's no such thing as a better compressor, compressors should be inaudible while they do their job, bad compressors always sound very obvious whereas a good one will be more subtle. You could argue that some people want to use their compressor as an effect rather than for it's intended purpose but that's a whole different ball game. Also saying that a compressor is an automated volume knob is vastly over simplifying. The way that it interacts with frequencies, especially on multi band compressors, can be very versatile, not to mention the attack and threshold controls. It does work by changing your volumes, but the way they do it means it's not that simple.
24.
Seriously, you DO want to spend £129 on a Turbotuner ! The Pitchblack is more accurate than the Polytune (I think).
Want is definitely true, justifiable is another thing. I'm still trying to convince myself I don't need a 1x12 cab too, the polytune would be damage limitation whereas the TT would be gluttony. Yeah, I think the polytune is 0.5 cents and the korg is 0.2. I'll have to look into them. Only downside I've really seen of the TT (apart from being almost double the price of the polytune) is that there's no way around muting the signal when you're tuning preventing mid-song tweaks on the long notes.
25.
Does that make me odd?
It depends. A ) you get your fill of GAS elsewhere like eBay. B ) you can afford to buy everything new. I'd say C ) you don't get GAS, but that'd be absurd.
