1. IIRC the SUBs were EB's attempt to make a USA quality bass for under $1000. They managed it for a while but couldn't keep it up so had to drop it.
2.
I voted for you so, technically, a percentage of the glory is mine. Truckstop
Thanks very much, greatly appreciated. We've never been nominated for anything before either, so we really weren't expecting to win it. We were a bit disappointed when they called out 2nd and 3rd, then had a double take when they called us out. Funny part was that our singer is a daft bugger. His missus had arrived and he was outside talking to her so he missed the whole thing. Typical Joe.
3. Went down after being nominated for Best EP/Single and Best Drummer, we basically thought that we'd just show face and try to show some dignity when we didn't win. We only went and won the Best EP/Single category though! Feeling well chuffed now. As far as I know, they're the first awards we've been nominated for and to pick one up and come 3rd in the other is awesome. I posted a thread on here a while back asking people to vote, so if anyone did vote for us, it's much appreciated!
4. For the OP, there's definitely synth FX going on. Look into things like the Roland V-Bass if you want to sound exactly like that. It's quite possibly not even a bass guitar though.
Now I have custom gauge strings now so every string has the same amount of tension
Quick note on this: String guage is a bit misleading when it comes to string tension. The biggest factor in tension is the guage of the core, when you look at string guages you're actually looking at the guage including the winding. More even string guages will mean the cores are more likely to be even, but there's still a chance that the tension can vary a lot with whatever guages you use. IIRC at least.
5.
Looking at your sig I bet your back can't wait!
No kidding, my current rig weighs roughly the same as a fully grown planet. I only use one cab most of the time but hauling it to practices is still a royal pain in the ass. I love this rig and can't see me ever moving away from GK stuff, I've got no intentions of replacing it for gigging, but for practices and small acoustic-ish gigs, there's no need for a 1080w amp and even just one 4x10. MB Fusion 500 and 2 Neo 112s: 64.5lbs. 2001RB-II and 2 410RBHs: 234.5lbs Sounds good..
6.
If you like the GK sound then its worth checking these out. http://www.thomann.de/gb/gallien_krueger_mb_fusion.htm
Aha, they're finally out then haha. I'll be looking to get one of these soon and pair it with a couple of GK Neo 112s. There's always the MB combos too.
7. The music I enjoy, yes, I'd play for free (assuming it was local, if I had to travel I'd want expenses). I would (and have) also play for free if it's a small gig that's likely to lead onto a bigger gig or festival (if they have a reputation for following through at least).
8. Could you use an attenuator? I know they're used with big valve guitar amps to turn down the volume after the power amp (so you can still drive the valves without blowing peoples' ears out) but I assume someone would've mentioned them if they were viable.
9. I bought my Sandberg off Ash and he was a nice bloke, could've chatted to him for ages about bass-related stuff if he wasn't on his work break. I saw the Dean at the time and it looked in good condition. I'm not in the know about EUBs though hehe.
10. My band's recently been nominated for a couple of Pure Rawk awards, I thought I'd give it a little push. I won't ask people to blindy vote for my band, so please check out the other bands and cast your votes as you will, but any votes for us would be greatly appreciated. There's various links to JWP's pages in my sig. Here's the URL for the voting page: http://www.purerawk.com/2011/01/10/nominations-announced/ Thanks!
11.
Trace, Ashdown, Laney are the most common around here
Are Orange in the British bass amp category, I know they are for guitars. I don't know about British bass amps (sorry, I really don't like Ashdowns, I do like some of the other brands mentioned though so I don't really think they have a specific sound) but British guitar amps are very obviously voiced. They're usually very gainy, crunchy overdrives and slightly broken up cleans. Very often single channel stuff that do both well, just not at the same time.
12.
2.It's all about the technique, like you say. The specific player and their technique is the biggest factor when it comes to tone. Sure,a Jazz and a Precision have certain idiosyncrasies, but a good player will sound pretty much the same on either.Like I've said before, there is a track on the SMV album where Marcus and Stanley swap basses and they still sound like themselves.
I only partially agree with this. It's something that's said a lot but it's not strictly true. I sounded just as much like me when I played my Ibanez BTB406 through my Carlsbro Bassline 150 as I do now with my Sandberg and GK stack. It's nothing to do with my tone that I sound the same though, it's my style. I'm actually selling my Thumb at the moment because, although it's a lovely bass, the Sandberg is better at doing MY sound in my band. Doubtless if a bassist has a recognisable style (which overlaps with technique) they'll always sound like the same bassist. Give that bassist a P and an Ampeg or a Wal with a Genz they'll always have the same style. They'll sound very different tonally though. Right hand technique is a big part of your tone, but there's only so many places you can hit a string and a dynamic player will be plucking/picking with different amounts of power anyway. When I think of how to judge tone versus style, I think tone is "how would that sound if I simply played crotchets on the same note?". Gear would and does have a big impact on that. Of course once you start getting into EQ and FX, players start to sound more like themselves tonally irrespective of gear.
13. Bump up. Got a couple of potential offers but nothing definite. Worth mentioning that this is a proper Warwick "rock case" wooden flight case if people are interested in that, not a plastic or softcase. It's like the one in this link: http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/3360...itar-black.html but it's been battered about a bit. It's still very sturdy though.
14. I don't think 99% of people would know if you were playing a Jazz or a Ray. I do think however that at least 75% of people will think the band sounds better as a whole if the gear's right, especially with bass where a bad tone will make the band sound either thin or muddy. I love my GK rig (turned down another endorsement offer before I even got one from GK because I already had an amp I'd rather use) but if I was a bedroom bassist, it just doesn't get the tone in my head when I play solo. In a band situation it's everything I want though, beefy as hell but still well defined. I think that kind of thing is the thing that people pick up on, if I used the tone I'd use in my bedroom at a gig, it'd sound too thin and people would pick up that it didn't sound as good. The other thing to consider is the sound guy. Certain tones make his job easier. The sound guy at our regular gig loved when I got my Sandberg, he said he found it much easier to EQ and work with generally in my band than my Warwick. Obviously it's different for every setup, but a Sandberg into a GK is something I can see being my setup for a long time because it just fits. Does that mean a P into an ampeg rig wouldn't work? No, but I'm where I want to be tone-wise.
15. You might have to accept that you won't sound your best at practice and take out a lot of lows. That'll be by far the easiest, cheapest and most efficient way of doing it. You could try getting some matresses and putting them around the walls of your practice room, that will dampen the sound a bit. Even just drapes hung a bit away from the wall will help a little (though not a lot, admittedly). It sounds like you have a very accomodating neighbour, so you should try some stuff out and get feedback from him.
16. Apologies to the rest of the forum for doing it publically, but it has been almost a year and I still see him successfully trading on here. It's a concern that he could do the same thing to other people so I'd rather kick up a bit of a fuss than let him get away with it.
17. Jay, since I can't get your attention anywhere else and I'm sick of trying. Can I please have the money we agreed on for the repairs the bass you sold me needed? I know by now you've seen, and ignored, my communications in private so I thought maybe a more public approach would do it. If you contact me and we resolve this, I'll happily remove this post and post on your feedback thread that it has been resolved, but I've been out of pocket a long time now (almost a year) and it needs to be sorted.
18. Bump again. Lowest cash price I'll go is £750 and I'll include the case. This bass cost me a lot more (I never even got back the money from the guy that sold it to me needing the repairs, he disappeared quickly off the forum, reappearing only briefly to sell some cabs...) so I want to minimise the loss on this even though it's going to be hundreds anyway. I'm willing to look at whatever trades people offer though. I'm especially interested in 5/6 with MM style pup(s). Pref cash my way but maybe a straight trade depending on what's on offer. Thanks
19. One of my fave songs by him is Iambic 5 Poetry. This is a guy doing a pretty neat cover of the bass part. It's got a beautiful melody and in the full version, when the drums kick in it sends a shiver down my spine.
20. If you don't mind me asking, in what ballpark is it going to cost? I've put up a thread elsewhere about buying a cheap-ish bass and doing some customising on it. Ordering the parts from somewhere like Warmoth is the other option but I don't realistically know how much it'd be.
21. Just saw Cairobill post a link to a video of his in the for sale forum. Any other fans here? I've been telling my friends for years what an awesome bass player he is, as well as the awesome music he makes. He also seems like a nice chap! Two videos, first one's a special thing he did for the guardian. Second is an interview for the BBC with him playing at the end.
22.
Dude, really? Look in the FS forum.
There's buying someone else's custom bass and buying my custom bass. Very different things and buying my own would cost a lot and have bad re-sale value. Neephied, what's the difference between MM and MFD? I made the assumption purely on looks, obviously I missed something. I don't want to do anything too crazy, the MM/MM config has been done enough times before that it's tried and tested and adding a forearm contour isn't all that crazy considering most basses have them anyway (and that'd be avoided if I didn't go for a SUB).
23. Sounds to me like he has the whole signal distorted (instead of just distorting the highs) and very strange EQ. Might even be a kind of filter to get that effect.
24. Ever tried a Sandberg? http://www.sandberg-guitars.de/basscat-ove...s/caljj-passive
25. Well the only bass I've seen in that kind of budget that has two MM pups and appealed to me is the G&L L2500, which blew me away when I had a play on one a while back (and if I'm honest, is part of the reason I'm GASing for a MM/MM bass). Even if I were to just buy one of those, I'd like to put in coil taps on the MMs. Just buying something would take out all of the fun though just buying something. I've never modded any of my instruments and I know I'm capable of it from a few repairs I've had to do. Just thought it could be something interesting and fun that would make the instrument a little more special to me. It's a bit like buying a jigsaw then someone saying "well why didn't you just buy the picture?"
