1. Big bump up! I'll consider offers, but remember this rig cost me over £1500 less than 6 months ago, I think £1000 2nd hand is a fair price second hand so I don't want to take a huge loss.
2. Learn your arpeggios and if you're playing in a modern ska band (excuse the people who don't know how to seperate opinion from facts) then learn to do them quickly. I play in a "Zydeco" (loosely, some songs are basically ska with an accordian) band and basically if you can keep arpeggios and scales moving around with the chords, then it's a lot of fun. If you're not too fast, don't worry, so long as you try and stay fairly busy it should be ok. All bands vary though, try playing it for yourself and see what works with your band mates.
3. I know these aren't really anything new to most people on here (in terms of hearing about them at least) but I'm really curious, not sure I'd be able to afford one any time soon, but they do look like great fun! Any places around the midlands that stock any? What kind of prices do they start? (FWIW, I'd be looking at a 5 string J/J config) What brands make nice ones? I only really know of Dingwall. I'm not seriously contemplating buying one at the moment, but it'd definitely be something I'd be interested in trying out in the future.
4. Thanks mate Glad you liked the song. This is still up (though I've had a very tempting offer, though it's only a 4 string). I'm still waiting for another reply from GK before this goes though, so remember that although it's up for sale/trade now, it's not actually available just yet. Can't go without an amp for any amount of time.
5. Back up again, still no bids on ebay at £250. Could be a bargain for someone
6. That Brice is an HXB, I had the same model a while back as a backup to my Ibanez, traded it because it wasn't getting used but for the money it really was a very good bass. There's very few 6ers in that price range anyway, and those are good quality for the money.
7. No complaints at all with my Thumb 5 BO into my GK RB/RBH rig.
8. Thanks Attitude. Still willing to look at offers on this. Will potentially look at trades too (5 string basses), but if you don't ask, you won't know.
9. Just had a really good result on the sale of my guitard amp, so I'll be happy to let this go for less than the £300 I've asked for. It's up on ebay for £250 starting bid (as I linked above) but PM me any offers you have on this and worst I can do is say no. I'm happy to let it go for a good bit under asking price though for a quick sale.
10.
The neck feels very fast. it seems a bit strange having a harder surface to fret on (or is that my imagination?) but im sure after 30mins or so ill get used to it.
Isn't maple a soft wood? Hence why you don't see maple fretlesses very often.
11. I voted that I don't care, because I don't, but IMO it's part of the guitar family, along with ukes etc. Whether or not that would make it a guitar is up to you, but saying "bass guitar" gives people a far more accurate idea of what one is than just "bass".
12.
I like Rumble, Sizzle, Sparkle and GROWL most of all!
COUGH You won't find better than a GK artist right for that kind of sound imo.
13. Sorry mate, just to clarify, the whole thing's up for sale. I did take down the head for a while, but it's all back up now. Had some interest in the cabs (just a nibble thus far). The whole stack is still available, £350 each or £1000 for the head and two cabs. This is a seriously awesome stack, it's 320w into one cab or 480w into both, it has the portability to take up very little room with the head and 1 2x10 if you don't have much space and still have enough power to play a small gig (or even a bigger one if you're further from the drummer) and get in a small car or you can use both cabs and be able to play larger venues and still have flexibility on how you fit stuff into a car. I carry this around in my S reg Fiesta with no problems at all, still got loads of room for other stuff and another passenger. I know there'll be points when I'll regret getting rid of the 2x10s in favour of 4x10s, but that's rock and roll. Volume first, practicality second.
14. Back up on ebay, £250 starting bid. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAVERICK-DAVE-PYBUS-...=item4aa32ccb5f
15. Might be prepared to take slightly less for this this week only so I have cash for when the money comes in from my amp. Still potentially looking for trades on this. WHY? Ideally a J/J config 5er. Will look at anything though, however unlikely. Just a reminder, only 20 of these were ever made and they were around £600 new. Surely half the new price for such a rare bass is a bargain! Plus the opportunity to go meet Dave Pybus himself.
16. Just for the record, I don't think scale length affects low strings as much as you think. My 34" Thumb BO handles low B brilliantly (it's a 5 string, but still 34" scale). On a cheaper instrument the extra tension from having a longer scale can help, but if you're upgrading the pups, I think you'll be ok if you get ones that'll do the job.
17. I have to say, I don't really understand why people would EQ differently for different bands (within the same genre at least). In a standard rock band (with only one bass instrument) there should be nothing that interferes with the bass. I play in a band with an accordion (very bassy instruments) and I don't have to change my EQ from my other band (which is a 4 piece, but the flute doesn't really count with bass and most of the keyboard work (4th member alternates between keyboard and flute) doesn't interfere with my basslines as it's usually in the higher range). The key for me is definition, so long as the notes I'm playing can be heard and I'm filling out the bass frequencies, I'm happy. It's my main reason for disliking Ashdowns so much (IMO, of course) they can either be EQd with enough bass to fill the sound and they become muddy, or you can EQ them for definition and they don't have enough bass to fill the sound out. Maybe I've just been lucky that all the guitarists I've played with have known how to EQ themselves (and have had good amps) or they're open to me fiddling with their EQ to get the best out of the overall band sound. But I've played with a couple of people with Mesas (which are very bassy sounding amps) and never had any problems with frequency clashes.
18. Yeah that'd work. They're essentially the same ends, just different sizes. I've done this before, it's a cheap way of DIing your bass (though I wouldn't expect the best quality But it'd be fine for practising).
19. I had a Heritage series Mockingbird and it was lovely, sounded fantastic and punchy. Just found I wasn't using it ever so traded it for a 5 Maverick (which I'm now trying to sell ) but it was a great instrument.
20. Faridas are SERIOUSLY under rated. We have a hollowbodied tele in at the moment and it's a stunning guitar. Had it ages though, no one wants to buy it because it's got the wrong F brand on the headstock.
21. So long as people look like they're having fun, it doesn't really matter what they're doing in my opinion. It's hard to tell if it looks out of place when you see a still of one band member, who knows what (s)he's in the middle of doing or what their other band mates are doing. It might be totally in place if you watch the whole scene.
22. Replied to Velvet via PM, very nice guitar he has up for offer, but not something I'd use. Will still consider anything in trade for this or money offers, my amp's got a bid on ebay now so want this to go preferably before I spend the money I get from selling the amp. hehe
23. Open tuning are used on guitar so that you can play various chords more easily, on bass there's rarely need for chords, so IMO it's more important to keep scales and arpeggios consistent than it is to have the chords easier to play.
24. This didn't sell and has gone back up: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=320562907086 There's a bid on it, so it's gonna go this week! Woohoo! hehe
