1.
Nice to hear you're getting the 2001 and 410rbh setup. That's the as mine. Keep me posted!
Yeah, the 2001 into 2x410rbh is a great setup, can't wait. If this ever sells. Should get the final offer (with prices etc) Monday or Tuesday, I'm still not officially endorsed by them yet, but they're definitely going to make the offer. I've talked it over with him and since I'm already using GK gear, there's no need to buy anything anyway, so I'm just gonna sit on these until they sell, then upgrade then. Though obviously the sooner I get rid of these, the sooner I can piss off the soundguys at the smaller venues we play with a 1k rig into 8x10 speakers.
2. Thanks, Lloyd. This didn't sell on eBay so it's still up for grabs. It's crazy that this hasn't sold, it's a seriously good bass for a very reasonable price. I'm open to any offers on anything now, could really do with the cash but failing that, something that interests me or would sell easily if I wanted to shift it. Still would prefer a Jazz bass (seriously GASing for one), but I'll have a look at anything. And you'll potentially get to meet Dave Pybus himself if you want it signed.
3.
If you're playing music that you wouldn't actually listen to in your own time, it's obvious.
Disagree completely. One of my bands is (based in, but very unique within the genre) zydeco music. I hate the genre, I enjoy playing in the band (I enjoy playing in any bands I'm in, regardless of genre) but I'm not interested at all in just listening to it (my parents are very into it, so there's been plenty of opportunities to get into it in the last decade or so). I don't even have a CD yet of our EP which has been out a few months now, I'd like it just as a record of something I've done, but I can't imagine ever picking it out on my iPod to play. It's just very good fun to play live. I can appreciate your point if you change the wording to "music that you don't enjoy" (assuming you include playing it in that statement) but music that you wouldn't listen to isn't true, I've had nothing but good feedback on my playing in that band, including from pro session musicians who play that sort of music for enjoyment as well as professionally.
4. Do they have to be mutually exclusive? I have my own style which I think it recognisable across a few of my originals bands, but the bits of session work I've done have required certain styles (even when writing original tunes) which I've played without any problems.
5. Still looking to sell this bump. I'll look at serious offers too, though I want as close to the £1,000 mark as possible.
6.
I Think there is a good deal of snobbery - Ibanez and Esp barely ever get mentioned on here it seems, and i own one of each lol. Maybe im just too metal for my own good.
I disagree about Ibanez, the GSR series especially get a lot of good press on here. When they come up the BTBs do too, though I know what you mean, most people just use Fenders and there's only the odd thread about other basses. I guess ESP are slightly more "specialised" (if you want to call it that). To be honest, I'm not a fan of ESPs anyway, the ones I've played (mainly guitars, admittedly) have never compared to Ibanezes in terms of build quality, I have seen one or two really nice ones though.
7. Don't like the tone personally, it doesn't sound punchy enough or fat enough for slap, the sound's far too dry imo. If you like that kinda thing, then fine, but it's a bit like trying to play the blues with an Ibanez guitar through a Mesa amp IMO, just doesn't suit.
8. Thanks Lloyd, thank Dave for me. If anyone does want the bass signed, I'll happily do that, it'll cost about an extra £40 in petrol to get it there and back (unless Dave is happy for the buyer to go get it signed, then they could cover the costs themselves). Tom, I dunno if it's snobbery (probably is with some people) but Mavericks really aren't very well known basses, which is a shame because they're awesome. Guess they never will be well known now though since they're not around any more. Think back to when they were at their height, they were taking a lot of bands that had Ibanez (which IMO are always stunning instruments) and ESP endorsements etc. Thanks for that Rob, the recording sounds good. I've never played a TB, but I can imagine it's a similar feel.
9. I think that fate's determined I won't sell anything at the moment, my WEM and Maverick aren't going either. I'll be getting a 2001RB-II into 2 410RBHs. Exactly the same rig as this, just more power and more speakers. I've been tempted to try the Fusion head and neo cabs, but this rig sounds so good I'm happy to stick with the same series cabs and head.
10. I don't use compression personally but it gets used in the studio mainly because it's used on anything, I don't use it as an effect, my GK is more than punchy enough and I like the dynamics without it.
11. I've started to listen to some US Ska recently, mainly because we have a gig coming up with Streetlight Manifesto (Derby date on their next UK mini tour) and I've never really heard of them. Capdown's Pound for the Sound is a good tune, plus lots of Streetlight Stuff.
12. All the bands I've been in, I've seen to the bitter end, I've never left a band. One of them reformed with a new bassist and drummer (without telling either of us) but they made such a cock up of the music, more fool them.
13. Didn't sell on ebay so it's back up, £250 starting bid, £400 buy out. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAVERICK-DAVE-PYBUS-...=item4aa2dacf43
14. This was up for a BIN and Best Offer, but I've put it up for auction now since I need the sale. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=320559821907 Feel free to IM me for more info. Thom
15. Bump up, less than an hour to go on ebay. Shame there doesn't seem to be much interest, this is genuinely a brilliant bass. Guess people are just put off by the shape.
16. If you'd asked me 6 months ago, I'd have said guitar without a doubt. Getting a new bass and amp really has paid for it's self in ideas though. I've been practicing more at home and come up with little exercises to try and improve my playing, then do them to warm up at band practice and someone likes them, then next thing I know, I'm doing two hand tapping in a song (only slow, but still...interesting). I've voted for keys too because they're IMO the ultimate writing instrument, they allow for a lot more freedom than guitar or bass IMO because you can hold down as many notes as you want (or can reach, which with big hands is quite a lot) and you can simultaneously play in the treble and bass cleff with very little difficulty. If I was writing solo stuff, it'd be most likely based around piano parts, but because of the band set up I'm in (driven by guitar and bass, the keys are only mainly in the background) I don't write on it currently.
17. Ok, pics are up. £350 each for the head and cabs, £1000 for all 3. If anyone's interested in the tuner and rack case, I might be prepared to let them go too for the right price, depending on what's left of the rest of the rig. This amp's all new, just been gigged a few times a week since I got it, it still sounds brilliant though and has plenty of volume for monitoring any stage we've played so far (including open air festivals, which take a fair bit more than your average indoor gig). I live right off J25 of the M1, so feel free to pop around for a go if you fancy. Here's a video of my band on Friday with this amp (signal taken from the DI out and don't tell anyone I've given out this video, we're not publicising them yet until all the songs we had recorded from that gig are up): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD-ad7mIShE Here's my other band's facebook page, the recordings are mic'd up with one of the cabs, petite et la grosse gives a good idea of the sound (link's on the facebook): http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/pa...54078839?ref=ts If someone takes any combo of this, my WEM and my Maverick (any combination of some/all) I'll knock money off accordingly. WEM: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;hl=dominator Maverick: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=89551
18.
I guess that answers my question. Nobody adds sound clips to their for sale ads, because no-one except for me thinks it's worth doing
I think you should re-read what people have said. The general consensus is that many people don't have the gear to do it, those that do all use different gear so you couldn't get an accurate idea of the sound and then everyone plays with varying styles anyway, so there's no way of telling how a bass would sound with your gear and your hands, whatever it sounds like in someone else's set up. Plus once it's gone into Logic or something like that, who's to say it's not been EQ'd and effected to make it sound better anyway? I know if I was recording something for selling, I'd want to make it sound as good as poss. How good a bass sounds shouldn't come down to how good the seller is at engineering.
19. Bump up again, 2 days to go on the auction, this really needs to go.
20. Not everyone has access to recording equipment and even if they did, does a bass that's recorded through a high end mic into logic actually sound better than one that's recorded on a webcam mic into windows sound recorder? Also how much does the player's style affect the sound at all? In an ideal world every FS thread would include sound clips, but I don't because of the amount of work involved that ultimately doesn't mean much because of all the variables.
21.
I think that guitars often look silly in 2010. We have to remember that things like Telecasters were designed in the 1950s when on average people were a lot smaller than they are now. Anyone over 6 foot tall looks ridiculous playing one, and much more sensible holding a bass. Guitars just aren't in proportion any more.
I'm over 6'1 and a "big" guy, I spent years playing a 6 string bass. Apparently after people are used to that, I look hilarious playing my Les Paul (which I rarely play outside my house).
22. Too far for me, sorry, but even though I have no specific interest in this specific bass, I'd happily spend £50 on it if it were local just in case it ever came in handy. That's a hell of a bargain without even thinking of the case.
23. It's funny, I'm selling a rare bass (my Mav, only 20 made) and I have that it's rare in the description, it just says what it is in the title, i.e. it's model and that it's a 5 string bass. I saw one that made me laugh earlier, a black jazz scrathplate, nothing fancy at all that had "~W0W~" in the title. Amazing! WOW! Never seen one of those before...
