1.
I wouldn't recommend this. Assuming that the 210 is an 8 ohm cab, then you'd need the 410 to also be an 8 ohm cab to keep the combined impedance above 4 ohm. However, this will then mean that when you run them together, the speakers in the 210 are working twice as hard as the speakers in the 410. S.P.
Is that a big problem? I'm currently running a 400w 2x10 (GK 210RBH) and thinking about getting a cheap Ashdown Mag410T (350w) to beef up the volume from my 700RB-II. Considering the speakers in the 210 are rated at over twice the power of the 410, that shouldn't be a problem, right?
2.
In terms of bang for buck Warwick are hard to beat s/h as the market seems so depressed. I've picked up some real bargains recently, and every one is a belter. I've never come across a richer, more even tone across the board, or a tighter B on a 34" scale. Of course they are marmite basses - you either love them or hate them. I'd steer clear of Fender 5's as the bottom B just doesn't cut it. MM stingray 5's can be very good, but I feel they're a one trick pony - I've had two and left the selector on the neck coil the whole time as both the other settings sounded tinny and thin (not like $$, or the even better Fender Roscoe Beck V). Of course you could try a SR5 HH but good luck finding one s/h as they seem fairly rare (and way too much for your budget new). Laklands are worth a whirl, not my cup of tea really but well made and tight B-string. Also check out some of what Cort makes - not shabby at all. Ditto MTD Kingston.
I think I'm gonna go with a Warwick, the prices 2nd hand are silly so it makes sense to try them out since they've been my dream bass for years. If I do decide that I don't get on with the neck, I don't expect I'll have too much hassle moving it on. There's been a few on this forum that've been very tempting!
3. I still have my first bass, a Washburn XB100. Cost £150 (it was that or a P Bass and I was bored of Fenders before I'd even started playing), I use it for teaching now but it has problems with the jack socket that I never quite get around to sorting out, so it hasn't been plugged in in a long time. My first amp was a 10w thingy, can't remember anything more specific. Said I'd share it with a friend that I owed some money until I could pay him back, never saw it again (never gave him the money either).
4.
Stingray 5 has a great low B,real comfy neck profile and feel,is warm fat and punchy sounding all at the same time and blends in with everything. Leave the switch on the parallel setting, add a little bit of bass boost and forget about the controls after that. imo an easy bass to love for its simplicity and for doing what it does so well without fuss.
I was thinking SR would be a very good possibility, but I tried a 5er at Rattle and Drum and it just sounds lifeless to me. I think maybe the strings were just dead, but it's very offputting when that's my only real experience of them.
5. Ok, I've tried out a few things, so I'm bumping this with added description! Basically I've been playing my BTB406QM for a long time and I'm very used to the neck, I have no problems with my hands so I could probably adjust to any neck size, but I'd rather have a slimmer neck profile. I've recently fallen in love with Fender J necks. Tone capabilities, the more the merrier. I tend to only use one tone from my bass, but I like to play a lot to get it. If the bass's fundamental tone is something I like, then just tweaking it is perfect. If it's something I don't like with the EQ flat, I find it a chore to find a tone I like. I do like having a choice of pickup though, but I'd rather have just a neck pickup than just a bridge one. To try and describe the tone I like again, I like it punchy and clear but still with a fat low end and good definition. Looks wise, I'd like something that looks fairly interesting. As nice as Jazz basses are, I find them fairly boring. Also something with a nice wood grain would be perfect, it doesn't have to be AAAAA quilted maple, I like the ovangkol of Warwicks etc too, I just like grains. The basses that I'm looking at at the moment (as mentioned above) are Warwicks, EBMMs and Fender Jazz Vs. I'm sure there must be more out there that're available to try around the midlands somewhere.
6. I use a GK 700RB-II into a 210RBH cab, this setup's available as a combo with the added advantage of pop out wheels. Sounds great and as a combo I don't think you could go wrong if that's what you're after.
7. Where is it? Could be exactly what I'm looking for if it's in the right place...
8. Stupid drummers. I'd be annoyed if I'd just booked a gig then they quit. Maybe they just don't fancy gigging though. You should try and find more people. If there was another band member that's still up for gigging, stay in contact with them and find new people. If you replace people as they leave, even if you end up with a totally new lineup, at least the band should be a bit more steady.
9. I have a 700RB-II and a 210RBH and it sounds awesome. It's not as loud as I'd like it to be, but I think that's the cab (the head seems to go louder without distorting into other cabs and the cab seems to go louder without distorting with other heads). I'm sure if I was running it through a 410RBH it'd be far louder. I'm actually tempted to get the Neo 212, either to go under the 210RBH or to replace the 210 completely and then get another 212. Not sure how the 210 and the 212 would interact with each other though so need to look it up. Sorry, I'm just rambling now.
10. If you find your hand moving about more than you'd like or that you run out of notes at the business end, then you should look into a 5er. You could always try stringing up a 4er BEAD (if you don't need the G) and see where your hand takes you. In all honesty, I don't think you'll know for certain whether or not you could use one unless you get one and use it for long enough to get used to it and incorporate it in your playing properly.
11. I find it crazy that you can pay a company to deliver a package, then if it arrives broken or doesn't arrive at all, it's YOUR responsibility to have insurance or cover the costs. I know that's the way it works, but I can't think of any other sector where you pay a company to do a job then they accept no responsibility for any negative results.
12. I usually try a note that I think it is, I know the keys of the song so it's usually in key even if it's the wrong note. Every so often it's the next note in the key so it does sound off, but it's rare. It's only if I'm bored or severely under rehearsed that it's a problem. Got a gig on Sat with a band I haven't played with in 5 months (not JWP in my sig), only had 3 practices before that gig and run through the set once and a half this time. Going to be hitting lots of jazz notes I fear. Most of the songs are just one bar repeated though so I'm not too concerned about it.
13. Nice one! It's always great when you find a new outlet for your playing. You sound a lot like my new band used to (way before I joined).
14.
I don't want to jump to any conclusions about lying. I think Rich might be right in saying he just didn't know. In the original listing the fretboard was also advertised as being Ebony and the body Bubinga Pommelle, whereas in actuality it's wenge and ordinary bubinga.
There's ignorance and there's lying. If the fret or neck quality hadn't been mentioned, fair enough. But since they were noted as being in good nick, it's a deliberately stated fact that's wrong. At best, the seller was talking out of his arse, which wouldn't make me trust him any more than if he'd been lying. Maybe I'm just being super cynical because I've had a long day, but if someone has described something that isn't true, I wouldn't trust anything they said without good reason.
15. Personally I'd get a refund, if he's lied about the neck and frets (which are obviously in a bad way, however much/little work needs to be done) then I wouldn't have the confidence to trade with him in case there's anything else he's "forgotten" to mention.
16.
This isn't really the issue though. What I want to know is if there is anything in this idea of RSI being in the mind (mainly because my GP is sh*t). I suppose it entirely depends on the nature of the RSI, and to know that you'd need a diagnosis, which I don't have.
Anyone more in the know than me feel free to correct the following, this is what I interpreted from my GP when I was having problems. Tendonitis is the swelling of tendons caused by them rubbing repetitively in the same way for a long period of time. Swelling can go down and is healed, but if you do the wrong thing (like continue doing the thing that caused it) it can cause scarring which is a hell of a lot more difficult to get rid of and can be permanent. Swollen and scarred tendons is definitely not in the mind. Whether or not you believe that the mind is stronger than the body and you can reduce swelling by certain mental exercises, the swelling and the scarring are certain physical problems and cannot be overlooked.
17.
Sorry! If i'd had a load of surgery and physio, and then some wonder treatment comes along to cure me in five minutes for free, i'd be pretty pissed off!!
Surely if you'd suffered a lot with a problem, you wouldn't want anyone else to go through the same thing? I can understand you'd be gutted it wasn't around when you had the problem, but I don't see why it'd make you angry that it's become available since.
18.
The main opponents seem to be people who've been through a lot of pain and treatment for this, and so would be outraged if their problem was solved easily.
That's a very unfair statement. I'd be delighted if someone suffering could be cured by spending £5 on a book and almost no time following the guidelines. On the flip side I've been devastated to hear about people who've tried various techniques not advised by doctors and have had to give up playing permanently. Worth a look? Maybe, so long as you look over it with your doctor and not try random techniques for improving without some medical experience watching over it. Worth going to before you go to see a doctor? No and anyone who says differently shouldn't be giving advice because they could cause someone a lot of harm. Interesting how the OP hasn't bothered to post and defend himself yet. I suspect it's just advertising.
19. As title pretty much. 5 stringers within that budget. I've been looking around and Warwick (2nd hand) and EBMMs (which I can get for trade) are pretty high on my list. Specifically the $$ and SR 5 (maybe even save myself a lot of money and go for one of the Sterling Ray 35s) I'm also tempted by the idea of a Fender Jazz V. I'm tempted by another Ibanez but I've had my BTB406QM so long that I think I'd like a change away from the Ibanez style necks. Really I'm just kinda fishing around because I've never really looked at higher end basses apart from to drool over and there aren't a lot of decent shops for bass stock around the Nottingham/Derby area so it would mean a bit of travel and I'd rather have some suggestions to look at before I set off. For tone I'm looking for something that works with my GK rig, nice and fat low end without losing any clarity, served with a generous portion of punch. Any other suggestions? Thanks for any help.
20. Obviously they're only opinions so everyone's different, but do you ever feel that you must be the only person on the planet that believes something? My example is TC RS210s, tried one a while ago with my GK 700RB-II and I thought they sounded dull and lifeless. Crossed them straight off my list and wouldn't even consider one now. Similar but not quite so extreme is Ashdown, I've had awful experiences with them and never found a combo that I thought sounded ok (and the stacks aren't as good as other similarly priced things IMO) but I know not everyone gets on with them.
21. It does look like the bastard child of a TBird and a tele. Definitely something that I'll be avoiding at all costs.
22.
I dont know why people are reacting so badly to this thread.
Personally (apart from my own experiences with RSI) I find it quite irresponsible to suggest people start with this book rather than seeking a doctor's advice:
Again I understand your reservations. But I could not care less of what you think. If you get an RSI (Which I hope none of you will) and you will rich a dead end with treatments, then give it a try. Or better - start with it straight away.
Any medical issues should be taken up with a doctor and only a doctor, and in cases like this where certain things can make it worse, anything to be tried should be discussed with someone who knows what they're talking about. Suggesting to people that they should try and sort out a serious condition that can cause serious long term health problems by reading a book by someone who doesn't know the specifics of the patient (regardless of medical experience) is actually dangerous.
23.
Stay away from the GK if you dont want a metallic tone. The markbass would be the better option. Have you thought about trying the Warwick Profet 5.2? 500watts @ 4ohm. About €450 so maybe £400ish in the Uk. Very versitle head.
I don't think I'm really understanding what you mean by metallic tone. I don't find GK's metallic at all and I play a 700RB-II into a 210RBH. They're brilliant amps, very clear but still very fat and punchy. I'd recommend one any day. I would go for the 700RB-II at least though. I find mine struggles a bit, but it's only going through a 2x10, if you're using a 4x10 or adding another another 15 on top of that, you should be fine. £350 should pick you up a 700RB-II 2nd hand. £500 will get you a new one or a 2nd hand 1001RB-II head.
24. Introducing, the James Warner Prophecies! Links are in my sig, there's also a gigs thread on this forum here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=79919 We're a mix of loads of genres, we started out (many moons before I joined) as a folk rock band based around an acoustic guitar, a female and make vocalists with a bit of distortion sprinkled on for good measure. Nowadays we're down to just the male vocalist and we've responded to criticism about people being unable to box us (which is annoying, but ultimately we need to be able to market ourselves as a product instead of a jumble of loads of bits) and have turned more to the rocky side of things. Loads of stuff around about us, I can recommend checking out this search results list on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type...ory=0&page= That's a good gig we played recently, other stuff like a video for a single a while ago (before I joined) and various other videos are on there.
25. Oops, apologies, missed that. Was looking for a number.
