Passive Quite simply - I've never played an active bass I really really loved the tone of. Every single one has sounded artificial in some way. Above this, I don't like J pickups. P pups where poss. lol

I recently scored this SB700 on ebay for a rather ridiculous price. There is an issue with the jack socket though and it needs a tweak to the wiring inside to make the switch work properly. I've always wanted an old Aria, due to some of my bass influences playing them. Cliff, Neil Murray, Rudy Sarzo etc... I know that a lot of those guys played the 1000/ elites etc.., but I'm a died in the wool passive kind of chap lol It's a September 1981 if the serial decoders are correct. I really enjoy the feel of the neck - meaty without being fat, and quite wide as well but not uncomfortable in the slightest.

At the moment ( and for the previous few years), I've been on a tribute kick, meaning getting a hold of some of the instruments associated with those that inspired me to play. Look is important, as I often play with trib shows. Number of strings is largely irrelevant to me. 4's are king though Colour isn't particularly important either, but I have ended up with a lot of black instruments lol Feel is the most important things once I can my hands on the instrument. If it feels rough, or has issues I know can't be fixed, then I'm out

I have a modern player jag. its 34” and a passive pj. it’s currently in use for my ozzy/ sabbath trib. I used it at a rehearsal when we were putting the band together, and I was told not to bring a different bass. Ever lol it truly sounds massive, but I focus the balance of the pups toward the p, with an 80/20 balance.
