[/quote] The Excelsior is a cool amp, it sounded good with a bass before I started to play with it. Main mods I have done are replaced the valves GT 6L6's (matched pair of grade 8s)for the output. GT 5751 for the pre (about 30% les gain than a 12ax7 for improved clean headroom) and a Ruby 12ax7 in the inverter. . Ask me if your not shore about valve grading. . I replaced the output transformer with a Hammond 1650F much more iron and much, much better low frequency response (less loss of volume at low frequency than a guitar amp transformer and the main difference between a bass amp and a guitar amp) I have also done some work on the power supply and the pre amp sections that involved the replacement of some of the capacitors and resistors (I'm happy to discuss this but not in an open forum as there is some knowledge required concerning making an amp safe prior to working on the circuit) I have also replaced the dark/bright switch with a tone pot. One of the main topics of conversation on other forums reference this amp has been the speaker, with many modders fitting an eminence legend 1518 ( mainly as it is louder having a better SPL level) Personally I really like the sound I get from the standard speaker and at the volumes I use the amp at (home use only) it behaves very well, I have had complaints from neighbours so don't think it don't get pushed! I (as you may have noticed) have scrapped off the original nasty brown vinyl covering in favour of a nice red Tolex. my first attempt at doing this. All in all I'm really pleased with this amp.

    Just a thought I would consider a trade against a Fender Mustang Bass or a semi hollow short scale such as Hagstrom Viking.

    Ok, thinking I might not keep my Squier VI. Its brand spanking and I have barely touched it as im having trouble with a trapped nerve in my neck.     +1 for the VS cabs, I have a 1x12 and the 1x15. I do think you will have trouble finding them though as they have now been discontinued. I searched high n low for a second VS1x12 and couldn't find one. There are still a few places that have the 2x12 and 1x15 in stock though. There was a 1x15 on ebay and in gumtree. Last time I looked PMT still had a 1x15 and a 2x12. I think academy of sound had a 2x12 too, I had there last 1x12. Got my 1x15 from PMT in Bristol. Love these cabs with my CTM15 sound is so much better than it was with my TC RS112, they seem to suit valves better. They look awesome too. I think the 1x12 +1x15 work really well together and I'm loving the sound. I tried a 2x12 too, IMHO my two cabs sound better. Had a m8 over on Sat, he's a fair guitarist he plugged his Strat into the CTM and with the gain cranked up full it sounded unreal, better than through his metal muff. And so so SO LOUD As for valves, I replaced mine strait away as the stock valves were unbranded Chinese jobs (amp was harsh and disappointing fresh out of the box). I went with JJ el84's, valves are graded on a scale that indicates how clean or dirty they will be. The higher the number the cleaner they are, lower the number the higher the gain and more dirt. I got a pair of 10s. I replaced the 12AX7 (ECC83) with a GroveTubes 5751 ( a 12AX7 derivative with about 30% les gain )the net result was a softer rounder fuller sound, mellower, fatter bottom and more defined softer top end. I felt that the amps response to pedals was improved too. I have had the amp and the 112 about a month and the 115 for about 10 days, this thing just sounds better every time I plug in.

    Epiphone EB3 Limited Edition Short Scale Bass (white) I am selling this fantastic bass as I have decided to get a Fender Mustang It is in fantastic condition has a fast slim neck and plays/sounds great. This is the set neck version, just like the original Gibbson I have added a black pearl scratch plate and the bass has been modded to take a tune o matic bridge with strings through the body (allowing the use of standard length strings) or the standard 3 point bridge. Currently I have the standard bridge fitted loaded with La Bella flats (new a few weeks back)and I use nylon flats with the strung through mod.     Seeing these new basses has made me really long for another semi hollow. stopped in at PMT in oxford on Monday to have a quick look round but they didn't have one. They did however have a Hagstrom Viking, gave that a try instead. Only made things worse ! Now I know I have to get a semi hollow. The Viking was superb and I was so tempted but im guna have to try one of theses first.

    Hi Eude, bit slow replying Well the TC cab has now gone. Not because its not a good cab though. TC is smaller lighter louder and with the BH250 head I hade before sounds awesome. The VS cab has a more vintage tone to it and in my opinion matches the CTM15 a little better. I would of liked to of kept the TC gear too !! I do love the tone of the tube amps though, now there are a few lower wattage heads available that are suitable for home use I got one. You have to have very understanding neighbours to get the best out of a 100w+ tube amp at home, and very deep pockets. I should have a VS115 to go with it by the end of next week

    Just got one of these from a shop in Southampton. Trouble is I have hurt my back/neck n cant move my right arm properly so cant really try it.
