Not a stand-alone compressor but part of the channel strip in my sig. The compressor has its its own input and output jacks so can be used independently. Decent compressor but as you can see, only slow/fast options for attack and release. These channel strips come up used for around £50. Class D amps - do the manufacturers know what they are trying to do?
dincz replied to LukeFRC's topic in Amps and Cabs
as show by the inside of one of those powersofts....
Compare and contrast - Behringer EPQ900 (class H, 900 pretend watts). To be fair to Behringer, this is a perfectly adequate amp if you're looking for around 300 watts: -
Class D amps - do the manufacturers know what they are trying to do?
dincz replied to LukeFRC's topic in Amps and Cabs
The main deficiency of most Class D amps is that they lack sufficient capacitive storage capacity
I'd add class H with SMPS to the list based on experience and probably every other class with SMPS (no expereince). -
Class D amps - do the manufacturers know what they are trying to do?
dincz replied to LukeFRC's topic in Amps and Cabs
I was a believer but after trying various power amps I now have my doubts - not so much about class D - but about the switch-mode power supplies that (usually) feed them. I think it's all about having the headroom (and the power supply is part of this) to deal with the initial attack of a note. Class D/SMPS can handle it provided the amp has available clean power way in excess of what you might think you need - that is, lots of headroom. It's significant that amps are no longer rated for continuous power but for burst power, i.e. power that can be maintained for only a few tens of milliseconds. In fact, it seems from tests I've read that most SMPS powered amps will shut themselves down if you try to get their maximum rated power for several seconds continuously. If you want "oomph", which I take to mean the clean power to deal with attack , then stick with iron or choose a class D/SMPS amp with several times the power rating of a conventional amp that would do the job. That's where multiple kilowatts of Powersoft amp comes in handy. On the other hand, there's no reason at all why a SMPS couldn't be engineered for the purpose if some of the size/weight advantages were to be sacrificed. I'm not a design engineer so this is more gut feeling than anything else, although I was a maintenance tech in broadcasting for 20 years in a previous life so it's not a totally uninformed gut feeling. -
What, no blue LEDs! I'll take it.

"application not found" means that the file has been downloaded but your computer doesn't know what to do with it. Quite possibly the "ipb" thing mentioned before.

I have two Cort basses - a C4H and an Action 4. I'd like to replace the bridge on the Action as I prefer the Hipshot "quick-load" style shown below which is fitted to the C4H: 19mm string spacing, 3-way adjustable, quick load and budget-friendly are the criteria. Any suggestions? EDIT: "Quick-load" is probably not the correct term - I mean you don't have to pull/feed the strings through a hole. What is the right term?

Restringing a classical guitar with steels
dincz replied to Jono Bolton's topic in Other Instruments
My first guitar was a classical with steel strings and led to my interest in bass as the neck relief made it impossible to hold down more than one note at a time -
Looking for a way to produce a kick drum sound with my foot. Just a single foot pad with midi output to connect to a synth module. So far it looks like most pads output a trigger signal so I'd then need a trigger to midi converter - which I don't want. Would like to keep it as simple as possible.

Markbass - all made in Indonesia now and heavy?
No problem making offshore but surely end user should get the price benefit too?
I suspect benefit to the end user was not a motive for moving production to the east. -
Tech advice sought for future rig running.
dincz replied to indiegrungesound's topic in Amps and Cabs
I just looked at the manual for the PF350 and it appears that the preamp out socket is only on the PF500 & 800. You could still use the FX send jack but it's probably line level and so might be a little hot for an instrument input. If so, a simple resistive pad would bring it down - any tech should be able to sort that for next to nothing. -
I think the posters so far have missed the fact that it's valve amp. A high load impedance is not a problem for a solid state amp (usually), but with a valve amp it could be a problem. Nasty things (like high voltage spikes) can happen in the output transformer when running into a higher than ideal load impedance. In this case it's not a serious mismatch and you might get away with it, but available power output will be reduced.

As both Allparts and Thomann listed only one type of these washers, I assumed that they must be a standard size. They aren't and the ones from Allparts don't fit Looks like I'll have to go rummaging at the hardware store.
Could you upload that sound file to Soundcloud or something? I can't tell what the filename extension is supposed to be, I think the forum software has mangled it.
There's a link to Soundcloud just above "attached files"

I've been playing around with a BDI-21 and a Bad Monkey recently. Both give a little bit of dirt that sounds fine with the bass alone but in a band setting, the effect is almost lost among all the other stuff going on in the mid frequency range - hence the "why bother?". Meanwhile I came across some ancient cassettes of jams/rehearsals from 20 or more years ago. The bass in the attached snippet has a mild growly distortion on the lowest notes that isn't masked by the band. Back then I was using a clean preamp and a mosfet power amp with the clip light almost permanently lit. I guess this accounts for the sound. Anyway, I'm a lot gentler on my ears these days, but would still like to achieve something like the growl on this recording. As far as I remember, the bass was a cheap Samick P/J. Any ideas? The mp3 has somehow acquired an "ipb" extension. Try https://soundcloud.com/dincz-1/growl

As well as the usual two height adjustment screws for each saddle, this bridge on my Cort Artisan has a third screw. Any idea what this does? Thanks to all for your advice. After having a brainwave and remembering I had credit with Thomann for reviews I wrote of other stuff I bought from them, I then found out the credit had expired So Allparts it is. Thanks again
Dincz that sounds like it could be a good solution.. Do you find the preamp allows you to get away from the scooped mids of the BDI21?
I normally don't use bass or treble boost on the BDI so any mid scooping would be minimal. The low mid parametric should get you around that anyway. There's 15dB of boost available if you need it and I expect the right combination of freq and Q should fill the hole nicely.
I have just found one on eBay.. (the MPX1 that is) How would you describe it dincz?
It does everything I need except of course dirt. The EQ section (especially the 2 parametric mids) is very flexible and the compressor seems good too although I rarely use it. A minor niggle is that the instrument input (in fact all connections) is on the back panel. I normally leave a short cable plugged in which connects to the output of my BDI21 when I set up. The individual ins and outs for each section are a plus, allowing you to rearrange the order, bypass a section completely or use it on its own. As with most studio rack gear, there's bags of level available for driving a power amp - about +18dBu I think. In case you haven't seen it, there's a review here: http://www.soundonso...aaudiompx1.html and the excellent manual here: http://www.laaudio.c...0Usermanual.PDF

The LA Audio MPX10 mentioned by Acebassmusic was known as the MPX1 in its early years. They're both the same but the model number was changed to avoid confusion with the Lexicon FX processor with the same model number. The MPX1 turns up used more often than the MPX10.
