I'm sure that's true in some amps but it's a design issue, not a law of physics.
Unfortunately it is a law of physics - Ohm's law - and that's why an amp's maximum power at clipping with a 4 ohm load is never double what it is at 8 ohms. Until someone develops a power supply with zero impedance, we're stuck with it
-
In solid state amps with real-world power supplies, the rail voltage sags as you approach clipping - more so with a 4 ohm load than with 8 ohms because more current is being delivered. This can result in a certain amount of compression.
Well since P = V * (V / R) given a constant resistance the relationship between RMS voltage and RMS power will be a linear one i.e. twice the RMS voltage will give twice the RMS power.
Actually power is proportional to the square of the voltage - P = V² / R, so doubling the voltage quadruples the power.

School bass? Luxury! Our music teacher asked if any of us played a musical instrument. One of us answered "yes, I play electric guitar", to which the teacher replied "that's not a musical instrument".

Envelope filters that can handle a very hot input signal
dincz replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Effects
Any tech would be able to pad down the output of your bass. A few minutes work and a couple of resistors. -
The temperature cycling thing would be more relevant in stuff like power supplies and power amps. There are minute amounts of power and heat in an effects pedal.
-
A couple of resistors built in to your cord's jack plug and you've got an input pad. I'm sure any tech would fix that for you - or ask OBBM.

I see so many more recommendations for Peavey IPR than for Crown XLS power amps. Is there any good reason for this - or is it just that the Crown's lower input sensitivity (1.4V) scares people off?
-
If you don't necessarily want dirt, or are prepared to use a separate pedal for that, there' s whole range of mic preamps/channel strips that would do the job nicely, e.g. Presonus, ART. Rack preamps typically have more available output level than you'll ever need - no problem at all driving the Crown.

Squier jazz + £400 = the equivalent of a custom bass costing several thousand. Sssh! Don't tell Fender

With the EQ controls centred, my bass sounds exactly the same when I switch between passive and active - provided I'm plugged into a high impedance input, which is typical of instrument amps generally. Going directly into a line input on a mixer, there is a noticeable drop in highs in passive mode, whereas the buffering effect of the onboard preamp means no drop when in active mode even when going into low impedance inputs. A down side to this is the lack of any onboard tone controls (except the pickup blend) in passive mode, but then it's not a great hardship to use the amp's EQ which is 4 band with parametric mids and so much more versatile anyway. All in all, I can't really see any disadvantage in having the active option. and there's still the advantage of buffering - good for long cables or low impedance inputs - as well as the more powerful tone shaping if required. And replacing the battery a couple of times a year? I can live with that
The OP seems to know where the notes are. As I understand his post, he wants to learn the sounds of the notes in relation to each other.
The way I read his post, he wants to develop perfect pitch rather than intervals (relative pitch). A rare ability and not very useful. Recognising intervals sounds much more useful to me. Probably good to begin with 3rds (major and minor), 4ths and 5ths.
Nothing remotely like the question you posed, but have you considered one of the small headstock tuners? The Plant Waves Microtuner is a great little bit of kit http://www.soundsliv...CFfHKtAod4mwAkw
Weight 1kg - got to be a typo otherwise you'd need ballast at the other end!

How important is it to know all the lyrics to covers
dincz replied to bonzodog's topic in General Discussion
I use certain phrases as cues and that seems more intuitive to me than counting verses. A singer mixing up the words would probably throw me. -
Another one here. The first time I picked up a guitar I had no idea where the fat and skinny strings should be so I didn't know it was a righty. It just felt natural to play it right handed and the other way felt completely wrong. I write with the left hand and kick with the left foot but do everything else right handed e.g. bats, rackets etc. This could be the reason for my limited bass playing ability. Don't get me wrong, I'm not totally defeatist - in fact I do aspire to mediocrity

Best compact and lightweight cabinet for live use??
dincz replied to flameboy87's topic in Amps and Cabs
+1 great all round cab so long as you don't need tweeter/horn sizzle. Will be hugely loud with 600 watts despite being 8 ohm.
The Crown won't deliver 600 watts to an 8 ohm cab. Probably 400ish but yes, it should be loud. -
Yes, a DI would allow him to use any channel, but as channel 4 already has an instrument input he may as well save a few quid and use that.
I can't be the only one who finds it really difficult hearing or recognising the first beat of a bar, so any tips on how to find it? Channel 4 has a high (input) impedance switch so that would be the one to plug your bass into - especially if it's passive. According to this: http://www.yamahaproaudio.com/global/en/products/pasystems/stagepas_400i600i/specifications.jsp it's good for 4 ohm minimum speaker load per side
How on earth does a capacitor "break off"?
If the capacitor is not physically secured either with a mounting bracket or glue, constant vibration fatigues the legs and they snap.

I thought "Chaos and Creation" was a nice fresh take on Macca's indisputable way with choons but this one just sounds a bit too contrived and formulaic

I'm very likely a dork but this one is too much even for me. Fokus Pirat

I'm not qualified to comment here but I think it's essential to train your ears to recognise the more common intervals and to train your fingers to automatically find them on the fingerboard. A good starting point is the 4th e.g. from any fret on the E string to the same fret on the A string. From there the 5th e.g. any fret on the E to 2 frets higher on the A. Get those ingrained and you're off to a good start. As others have suggested, practise one finger per fret but don't treat it as an absolute rule - break it when necessary to make fingering easier or to prepare for a chord change.

Buffered pedals, True Bypass Pedals and Long Leads
You could get away with a 2N5088 if you haven't got a BC549, or probably a 2N3904 would do just as well.
I think I've still got some BC109's. Not bad for an old buffer.
