1.
Buffer will alter the tone from running unbuffered, suddenly you don't have chunks of it scooped out. Running into a high impedance can make quite a lot of difference.
Point taken. I should have said "If a buffer degrades the tone ...."
2.
As the video suggests. True bypass is what you want for short lengths of cable as the buffer built into the pedal can/will alter the tone.
There's no reason this should be so. It's dead easy to design/build small signal amplification stages that are dead flat from DC to hundreds of kilohertz, if not megahertz. There are more good reasons for including a buffer stage than there are for "true bypass" and its frequency-dependent loading effects on pickups. If a buffer alters the tone, it's not a good buffer.

Thanks, that may have to be the way out. A bit primitive for a moon mission but should do the trick in this case

DIY Effects

I'm about to build a copy of the Catalinbread SFT using this ready-made PCB from madbeanpedals: As you can see, there's no spare room for drilling holes for mounting screws and the pots aren't board mounted. Any tips?
5. This was useful: http://johnbscott.com/preamp_shootout/ I prefer the SFT closely followed by the Tonehammer and given the price of the TH and that I've got the required PCB and FETs already, it's time to get out the soldering iron and build the SFT.
6.
Lower frequency grunt describes the SFT to a tee. You dig in harder and it has a nice throaty roar like putting your foot down with a big V8!
That sounds like what I'm after! Funnily enough, I bought a PCB last year for a DIY SFT clone to build in my spare time. The spare time has worked really well - shovel loads of it but I'm chronically lazy I know - /sympathy

EQ

Not rack-mount but Boss EQ-20 has 10 band graphic EQ and 9 internal memories.
8. Some avenues for me to explore - thanks. I've already got a BDI-21 but I can only get fizzy distortion from it rather than the lower frequency grunt I'm looking for.
9. I've got a nice clean rig that I'm usually very happy with but there are times when I miss the slightly farty sound of a slightly overdriven speaker. Pedals I've heard seem to produce a fizzy, sizzling kind of fuzz. Is there anything that will simulate the sound of a speaker on the verge of breakup?
10. A few pros and cons came up in this thread: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/110954-remote-power-for-active-basses/page__hl__remote%20power
11. First impression - based on the size of the voice coils, the power rating is likely to be too low for serious use as a bass cab.
12. Thanks for the tips. These are good solutions but don't quite suit. Ideally, I'd like a giggable fx box that will double as a trainer. My phone needs are basically stone-age so I can't justify the cost of an iPhone The GB10 comes close but is a bit limited effects-wise. I'm probably looking for something that doesn't exist. For one thing, the cost of the necessary internal memory for music storage would bump up the price of a multi-fx, only to add functionality that most players wouldn't want or need.
13. Probably depends to some degree on your normal setup. I set my bass with very little neck relief so a change in weather can easily send it into rattle mode. More relief and a higher action would be less sensitive I guess.
14. Looking for a practice set-up with headphone out. Rather than use an external mp3 player into an aux input, can any multi-fx load mp3's through the USB interface and play them? Just trying to keep the clutter to a minimum.
15. Well at least I've got company I've just teamed up with a singer/songwriter/guitarist and a drummer and have a list of original songs to learn. My next move is to commit some lyrics to memory - not all, but key phrases that signal something I need to be aware of. Thanks for the tips.
16. Is this the first or second chorus? Do we go into the bridge next or another verse? I go blank sometimes and am wondering if it's just me or is this a common problem. I think the reason may be that I don't pay attention to lyrics so don't have the cues that they provide - or it could simply be (slightly) early Alzheimers. Any fellow sufferers, any tips and tricks?
17. It's probably lead-free solder, which generally has a higher melting point. If your iron isn't hot enough, then it's time to buy a new one
18. Just checked the block diagram in the Shuttlemax manual and yes, it is pre-master, so you can tweak away without affecting the DI out.
19. keepvid.com lets you download the video with a choice of quality - or just the audio in mp3 format
20. I never managed to get past Morrissey's consistently slightly sharp singing.
21.
Score! Good price too.
Not sure how prices compare generally but Cort stuff does seem to be a lot cheaper here than in the UK. How much do new ones go for there?
22. Nice. So nice in fact that I went out and bought one on impulse today. On sale new locally for the equivalent of £165. Seems like a great piece of kit for the money.

Sansamp VT Bass
Not meanign to derail this, but how does the BDI21 compare with the VT? Is it worlds apart of can you dial in a similar-esque vibe?
This comparison of the BDI21 and Sansamp's BDDI is worth a read: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f36/sansamp-bddi-vs-behringer-bdi21-blind-test-294957/
24. There could be more faulty components still in there, or the new transistors have different characteristics meaning that the bias might need adjusting. Either way it's probably a job for a real tech.
25. I can't see how any electromagnetic pickup could be transparent as the inductance of the coil will drastically affect frequency response. Maybe an optical pickup would get you close. Something like this: http://lightwave-systems.com/technology/
