No, I'm not but it's not difficult to understand it without knowing the language. Let me guess; Is it: "are you Czech? I speak a little bit czech but not very good." ? I'm glad you know how to solve the problem. Mark
Dead right! But do I detect a Slavic accent?
So you are an Englishman in Czech Republic and you don't speak local language. What about local guys who could help you? Have you tried contacting either AKG technical support, or locally this guy: http://www.akg.com/s...anguage,EN.html ? I don't think that he does not speak English. You could send him an e-mail with a photo, or even call him. You can also browse through service manuals on akg.com and look for similar microphones (service manual for D 190 is missing there). EDIT: contact details: http://www.audiomast...kty.php?cid=553 Mark
Vy jste čech? Mluvím trochu česky - ale špatně! I did write to Audiomaster some time ago but they couldn't help. Not sure why I didn't think of it before but I've just been looking at the AKG forum. Apparently the connector is held in by a spring clip which must have sprung off into the void when my clumsy band-mate tripped over the cable. I've now got the part number (still available 3 years ago and hopefully still now) and will try to get hold of one. Thanks again to all
Have you tested whether there is an inner frame under the outer skin with the grub screw setup?
The outer barrel does appear to be a separate part but no idea how to dismantle it.
I don't know for certain, but I'd be tempted to undo the two screws holding the switch in place.
The D190ES has the switch - this is just the plain old E.
Would manual for D200 be of any help: http://www.akg.com/m...90be0d1a3aa.pdf Mark
Thanks but that one appears to use a screw. And thanks to all who replied so far. I wasn't expecting much response.

A query for vintage owners of vintage microphones. I've got one of these and it's not bad for what it is but its value is mostly sentimental. The problem is that the XLR connector has popped out of the barrel and I don't know how it's supposed to be secured - there aren't any grub screws on the barrel. AKG referred me to the local (Czech) distributors but the language barrier is a bit tricky. Can anyone advise? EDIT: After being told by the local distributor that the part is no longer available, I found out from AKG that it is in fact still available. Now on order

I have it straight from the horse's mouth (or Alex Claber's to be precise) that 40Hz would work well with the Compact.
If thats starting to roll off at 75hz, prob be OK, depends how steep to an extent. The SVT 8x10 is rolling off from about there, but relatively gently.
It's -3dB at 75Hz and a 12dB/octave slope.
Try it and use your ears. Do you like the sound or not?
Sounds great in my living room but wondering about live situations - which I'm not likely to be in for a while. In any case, I'm curious and a tinkerer.
Relax your plucking hand, don't dig in too hard and don't forget to breathe.
+1 I think what happens when you go from home practice to rehearsal is that you tend to dig in more to get the volume to keep up with the band. Better to turn up the amp and play lighter.

help needed with ohms and connecting two cabs to one amp newbie here ;)
dincz replied to dannyt144's topic in Amps and Cabs
It would be if he had one/both cabs set to 4ohm.
The amp's output impedance is a small fraction of an ohm and is not usually listed in the specifications. 4Ω or 8Ω is not the amp's impedance but the minimum load impedance that the amp should be connected to. -
Introductions & some Advice re Behringer V amp Pro
dincz replied to Rover77's topic in Introductions
I guess you haven't got the manual and it's awful anyway. There's a useful guide put together by a guy on TalkBass. Get it here: http://www.zinfanus.com/vamp/guide.pdf -
modding be easy, but it depends on the board. in the general case you'd only need to change one capacitor, but if it's surface mount then it'll be a bit awkward to work on.
Modding is not the problem (see OP)

My Compact is 10dB down at 42Hz which should almost kill the fundamental of the bottom E (without any EQ) but in practice it's absolutely fine. Just how important is the fundamental anyway?
-
Just acquired a channel strip which includes a switchable 75Hz HPF in the input section. While this is fine for taming low frequencies from a mic, I wonder how suitable it's likely to be for bass use. Modification would be easy (conventional 2 pole Butterworth and no SMD) but what would you recommend as a cutoff frequency?
I don't want to sound as if I am trying to make out that you are wrong or anything, but surely if that were the case, power amp distortion wouldn't exist?
Instead of being limited by the supply rail voltages, in PWM you're limited by 0% and 100% pulse duty factor - which is really analogous to clipping.

Does active and passive inputs really matter in a bass amp?
dincz replied to DanTheMusicman's topic in Amps and Cabs
See above for explanation.
It says the same thing about high impedance pickups running into low impedance inputs. Guitar/bass amps generally don't have low impedance inputs anyway - unless they have a line input which is typically only 20kohm or so. Both hi/lo level/sensitivity inputs on amps tend to be at least 500kohm (high impedance) or so, so there won't be a problem. -
Does active and passive inputs really matter in a bass amp?
dincz replied to DanTheMusicman's topic in Amps and Cabs
Hi + Lo inputs are about loading pickups. Lo impedance input makes passive basses have a fuller tone. What you do with volume comes after that.
I think you're confusing High/Low impedance (HiZ, LoZ) with high and low level inputs. You really don't want to load a passive pickup with a LoZ input. If by "fuller" you mean lacking in high frequencies, then yes a low impedance input will achieve that. -
Just venting. Whenever I go looking for reviews of gear I come across this kind of fantasy/sci-fi pseudo-technical gibberish. I guess a 24 bit master sounds digital too. Badly recorded/processed analogue is just as bad. "It sounds like sh*t" is not equal to "It sounds digital".
Playing over the bridge pickup typically gives a short more abrupt sound as the string does not have as much chance to move and vibrate. That is why the neck pickup is BIG as it has more chance to move... Zing..as I understand it..is the condition of the string...and how clean/new it is. There seems to be this misconception that bass is good for a bass.. it is only up to a point. This is why big bassey cabs tend to be toneless...and is the same reason that big powerful pickups can be the same. The bass output overwhelms all other characteristics, Single coil are thinner typically and you hear the bass' inherrent sound..for good or bad.
I would have thought that as there's more string movement closer to the neck, the pickup wouldn't need to be as sensitive and so could be smaller. But then there's also more fundamental and lower harmonics the closer you get to the neck so maybe a heftier coil is necessary to get the low frequency response - more inductance, lower resonant frequency. "Zing" as I used the word meant more higher harmonics i.e. more treble. Sure, new strings will do that, but the bridge pickup gets more highs than the neck pickup no matter where you pluck/pick. This is all speculation based on observation rather than fact, so corrections are welcome.
-
Thanks for the tips! Narrowing the choices. I guess the main benefit of a single/split coil pu would be in the bridge position where the zing lives - any thoughts?

J-bass passive pickup in MM case/format. Does such a thing exist or should I get the router out?
If the mixer's close enough just plonk yer lead into a line-in, set the gain and off you go
Well maybe. A line input, rather than an instrument input, is normally fairly low impedance - around 20Kohms. For an active bass it probably won't matter, but it will affect the tone on a passive. The load on the pickups is likely to cause a loss of highs.

Have a look at the Crown XLS1000/XLS1500 too. They need a little more signal level from the preamp but yours will drive them easily. If you're using the EBS cab alone, you may want to run the amp in bridge mode - depending on your power needs. Although you can do this on both the Peavey and the Crown, it's a bit of a fiddle on the Peavey if I remember correctly.
