1. "Zonder verstarker" and "bez zesilovače" were probably close contenders but I think "Sansamp" has the edge.
2. 1) If you use all of the available power, you could damage the cab but you should hear it complaining before the damage is done. "All the way up" - you won't know when it's all the way up. You could get max power with a high output bass or high EQ settings even if the volume control is not set to max. 2) No difference. 3) With both 8 ohms, each cab could get 250W but the 4x10 will divide the 250W between 4 drivers. The single 15 will get the whole 250W so will be the weak link. 4) As well as problems of power distribution, a 4x10 and 1x15 are not an ideal combination for reasons mentioned regularly here.
3. Just posted this in another thread. Standard wiring for a blend pot:
4. This will do it:
5. I love Cort basses but this is the model that made me admit that looks do in fact matter
6. Most electromagnetic pickups are not active - i.e. they don't have an inbuilt preamp and so don't need power. Almost any electromagnetic pickup can be used with or without a preamp. Yes, the preamp you linked to will work, but then so will this: http://www.ebay.co.u...=item1e8dbf9432 Cheap experiment. You'll find a few cheapies on Ebay with differing EQ frequencies. There's no rocket science in bass preamps but you might find the cheaper ones are a bit more hissy at max treble boost.
7. Obviously there's no power amp to consider in a BDDI, so the implementation of a presence control in the feedback loop of a power amp doesn't help in this case. As far as the audible effect is concerned, I've never used a BDDI but do have a BDI-21 - supposedly a copy of the BDDI - and its presence control does seem to operate on a higher frequency range than the treble control.
8. Seymour Duncan SMB-4A installed and working - although with the Cort electronics for now. I've built a Stingray 2 band replica preamp but waiting for the op-amp to arrive. It's already well on the way to sounding like a Stingray (I think) but I wonder how much of the sound is the new pickup position which forces me to anchor my thumb and pluck in a new position. Maybe all I needed was a thumb rest in the right spot
9. Nothing to add really, but wasn't it common to use the field coil as a power supply filter choke?
10. Dad are ee oh!
11.
Don't fall in to the trap of thinking it's easier with satin as its not as shiny either, it will show up every imperfection in the finish.
Even with a perfect finish, satin will show shiny wear marks where you anchor your preferred body part. I've got a black satin bass with mahogany body and would love to do the reverse
12. I must pay more attention.
13.
If you're having the switch, may as well make it a series/parallel single, it's not any extra effort, just have to get the correct on-on-on switch!
I'll hook it up temporarily to see what happens but won't bother including it as a permanent feature if it doesn't offer anything. I was also considering a blend pot but on second thoughts I don't want to load the pickup unnecessarily.
14. Thanks for the input. The bass is going to have a spare hole to fill so I may as well do the S/P switch at least.
15. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words - even in a language I can understand: http://www.midi.cz/inzerat/115431/baskytaristu/
16. I'm stuck waiting for parts for my Mingray experiment (see thread in Bass Guitars). Meanwhile I'm wondering if it's worth including a series/parallel/single switch. I'd guess series/parallel would give quite different sounds but is a single coil option worth including? I'll be using a Seymour Duncan SMB-4A mounted in the Stingray spot.
17. They're too good not to have at that price. As for the Sansamp BDDI "real deal", there was a blind test on TB where most couldn't tell the difference and some actually preferred the Behringer - http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f36/sansamp-bddi-vs-behringer-bdi21-blind-test-294957/#post3620742
18.
Wonder if stringing it arse backwards actually contributes to the tone?
Looks to be strung normally - just played arse backwards with the E at the bottom.
19.
Maybe look at a delano pup if youve not decided yet
There's a used one for sale for £50 over my way but I couldn't find any detailed specs so not sure how close it is to the real thing. It's for a Sandberg and looks like this - http://www.midi.cz/inzerat/132956/snimace-pro-baskytaru-sandberg-delano-4str-a-5-str-modely-humbucker/www.sandberg-guitars.com
20.
I have nothing to add to this thread, other than to say that my name is Ming and I own two Stingrays. Therefore I fully support your noble quest to build the Mingray.
Your blessing is much appreciated
21.
Nice thread. I gather you're not 100% after the Stingray sound, but some of it's character. I think the impedance of the original Stringray pickup combined with the insane pre-amp the pre EB ones had is responsible for that sound. My Pre-EB is a Sabre, so has a slightly different pickup, but i think the Pre is the same - and it has a crazy amount of treble boost which I never use all of.
Thanks for the comments. It's the growl I'm after but not necessarily the extreme top end. It's part way there already and I'm now waiting on parts (the op-amp is not easy to find in the corner shop) to build a copy of the 2 band Stingray preamp. The local pickup guy can't do me a Stingray pickup unfortunately so I'll probably go for the Seymour Duncan as recommended by mcnach and others elsewhere on the web.
Seems like you're getting close with the Wilkinson pickup, you could try adding an Artec 2 band EQ (they are really cheap - and not bad at all quality) to see if that does it for you before you go spending on custom pickups and pre-amps.
The Wilkinson is sounding pretty good but its coil resistance is about double that of the real thing or of the SD. I expect the right low inductance pickup will make a world of difference. Stingrays sound to me as though the pickup is slightly overdriving the preamp when digging in which is why I'm planning to stick with the original preamp design. As for cosmetics, I was planning to have a pickguard cut to hide the excavations but not sure how this will work out with a slightly contoured body.
22.
That is correct sir. Thanks for playing spot the error. So it would be about that in parallel.
Thanks, but you probably want to sell the lot together. I'm tempted but postage to Czech Republic would probably take it up to the cost of a new SD
23.
GFS Stingray Pickup - £12 - measures 8.72k in series, but has 4 core plus shield wiring, so series is totally possible. Ceramic pickup. Usual stingray size. Pics:
Just to be clear - is it 4.36K per coil, so 2.18K in parallel?
24. Tapco S5 - and the bigger S8) - no longer made but come up used fairly often. Very happy with my S5's. Review here: http://www.soundonso...les/tapcos5.htm
