1. UK didn't release any albums in the 80s. Their last album Danger Money was released in '79. Well someone had to say it.
2. Whilst I'm sure making music in a communicative and expressive way is foremost in our enjoyment of bass, I wonder whether it is common to derive some physical pleasure from playing the instrument. The feel of the strings under the fingers, the tension when bending a string, the neck nestling in your hand whether gripped tightly or loosely, the upper horn against your ribcage, the strap on your shoulder, etc, etc. The same way a carpenter may enjoy the feel of a chisel in their hand, or an artist, the paintbrush. During the day, if I'm not playing, I miss some of these things and crave them.
3. Up at 5.45, practise 5.50 - 6.50 with a cup of tea and no amp. Everyday without fail, nothing gets in the way.
4.
The thing to remember is that bad news came before spinal tap (another fundamentally superb observational piece!)
As a finished article this is true, but the origins of ST go further back to a series of short sketches.
5.
As part of our Christmas celebrations, we have a quiz/games day. We were hosting the extended family this year & I did a Bassline quiz, point each for artist & song title. Plugged in my bass & played 20 or so memorable bass lines. Some were intros, others riffs or passages of what I thought were very memorable lines, was amazed at how difficult the guests found it! Only a couple of them got them right. List below as best remembered. The Chain - F. Mac Shakin all over - JK & the pirates Another one bites the dust - Queen Money - Pink Floyd Walking on the moon - Police Black Knight - Deep Purple Down in the tube station - the Jam Rat Trap - Boomtown Rats Le Freak - Chic London calling - the Clash Love cats - the cure Good times - Chic Eton rifles - the Jam Walk on the wild side - Lou Reed Uptown funk - Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars Bohemian Rapsody - Queen (waynes world bit!) Hey Joe - Jimi Hendrix (ascending riff bit) 7 nation army - White Stripes Papa was a rollin' stone - the Temptations PiL - PiL Peaches - Stranglers etc etc I thought they were too easy but it was only my missus & the musos who got 'em, the masses didnt have a clue!
What a great way to get rid of the guests. Must remember that one...
6.
I believe my tinnitus was caused by a drummer wearing plugs. He just didn't realize (or care) how loud he was playing in a confined space with me near the crash.
More likely it was caused by playing in a confined space with him, without wearing ear plugs.
7.
1,3,5,6,b7,6,5,3
The standard Rock 'n' roll bass line as recorded in hundreds of songs. Easily recognised by just about anyone at all.
8. Playing music you enjoy, for the fun of it. Imagine that!
9. 1. Is it OK if I play my 10 string? 2. Can my wife come to the next rehearsal? 3. Would one of you be able to pick me up for gigs? 4. Can I take a selfie with you? Do you think I'd get the gig?
10. I know there is a rock covers band called Sandstorm for whom a friend of mine played bass. Try googling them - their logo is a camel based version of Motorhead's.
11. AC/DC- Live Wire
12. If Peart actually does retire properly, he'll be one of the few musicians (John Deacon amongst them) who sticks to his word and I'll respect him for it.
13. I've got a right hand which has been shaken by Steve Hillage.
14.
OK, I'll play: Peter Gabriel - Secret World Live Rush - Roll the Bones (or Presto) Richard Thompson - Rumour & Sigh The Police - Regatta de Blanc Paul Young - No Parlez Steely Dan - The Royal Scam Eric Johnson - Ah Via Musicom Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffitti
You can take my copy of Roll The Bones if you like.
15. In days of peace, sweet smelling summer nights of wine and song.
16. "Sitting on a park bench, eyeing little girls with bad intent"
17. A big influence on Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, who have covered a couple of Nektar songs. Harris also shamelessly pinched some of their lyrics for his song Hallowed be thy Name.
18. 8pm tonight (28/8) BBC2
19. Last tour does not mean last live performances.
20. I heard they wanted to include their cover of Summertime Blues in the set, but they couldn't get hold of a copy of the original recording to sing along with.
21. The bridge is ripped off from Uriah Heep's "Bird of Prey".
22. Any thoughts on the opening chords to Orion? RT just plays root/5th/octave. I play E root/5th/octave , BDF#B, BEbF#B
23. Great player. I love the fills going into each verse in Cup of Wonder. Martin Barre has said that JG was more into the music than anyone else in the band during the SFTW period. I agree with the positive comments above about IA's bass playing on Stormwatch, which sounds very Glascock influenced.
