Fairport Convention Dirty Linen help ?
arthurhenry replied to dmccombe7's topic in General Discussion
The version on Full house and recent live versions on youtube are a touch slower than older live versions. 2nd section is particularly fast and all played around 12th/14th fret with slide up to 16th fret F#. Last section all down at bottom of neck, with lots of control over open strings needed. It's hard work, but fun. I'd break it down into the sections mentioned in the above post and work on each at a time. Good luck! -
Wrist protection - sweat bands and the like
arthurhenry replied to ahpook's topic in General Discussion
I would imagine the forearm between the wrist and elbow is in contact with the upper body of the bass for much of the time, whatever your playing style. As a fingerstyle player, I sometimes move my elbow and forearm away from the bass, when playing faster/more aggressively, but it's usually in contact. Look up some pictures of Billy Sheehan from the 80's, he had about 8 wristbands on each arm. Steve Harris always has West Ham ones. -
Good night in Bristol and the pleasure of being one of the first to pay the newly increased charges for the Severn bridge on the way home.

are there any super bands with poor bass players?
Have to say that MA solo above should never have gotten off the cutting floor...esp when you get EVH's a few songs on. Really... as far as solos go... and I understand the showbizz thing...a little bit.. but know your limits. It is awful... and sounds like he had done a few bottles of the stuff...
Agreed. As I said above, I'm a fan of MA's playing on early VH, but I fear the solo posted may well give more ammunition to the non-believers! -
Michael Anthonys playing with V.H. was top class IMO. Their debut album and fair warning were streets ahead of anything else they have done IMO. Satriani, Smith and Hagger are happy to use him for the Chickenfoot project and that is an endorsement of his ability by top class musicians
Agreed. FW is their best album in my opinion, though I think some of MA's best playing is to be found on VHII. -

Imagine coming home from every gig or recording session, knowing that you played exactly the right thing, with not a note out of place and made the band sound great. That's how Cliff Williams must feel. -
Bass Tab for Jethro Tull's Sweet Dream
arthurhenry replied to paulconnolly's topic in General Discussion
Good choice. Why not do yourself a favour and learn it by ear? There are videos of various Tull lineups doing it on youtube, which may also help. -
Anyone who doubts Cliff Williams musicianship, (which he practises through playing the bass.) should watch ACDC Live at River Plate. A stadium of people turned into one churning mass of celebration and communal enjoyment. Music at one of it's most base, feral and inane levels, but also pure and meaningful as well.
Also, look at the sales figures of Back in black. How many would it have sold if he was twiddling away all over it? -
So, as It never happened, what are we looking at?
Just something to ponder, for no particular reason! I suspect that the talent and creativity/imagination of the musicians had far more to do with the quality of their output than illegal drugs did.
-
Two of the most addictive and dangerous drugs on the planet - that's like saying 'No drugs (cannabis and the odd E excepted)'. I won't bother compiling a similar list of musicians who take/took illegal drugs, because it would take forever.......
Agreed, I should have written "No illegal drugs". The point is: would anyone suggest that Jeff Beck would be a better guitarist, or Ian Anderson a better songwriter if they abused drugs?
-
Most of your favourite music (and art in general) was probably created by people on drugs - just a thought
Maybe the music would have been even better if they weren't on drugs - why does no one ever look at it from that point of view? No drugs: (Nicotine and the odd beer excepted) Frank Zappa Angus Young Paul Gilbert Ian Anderson Martin Barre Gene Simmons Steve Vai Ravi Shankar Jeff Beck Steve Harris Ted Nugent Henry Rollins
No such things as "normal wear and tear" - there are many here (and elsewhere) who have 20-30 year old basses with NO W&T - look after your gear and it will always look as good as the day it left the factory. IMHO new "roadworn" basses look crap - a fad that will surely pass..the sooner the better I say..
True to a degree, but a certain amount can be expected through normal use. My '72 has wear marks where the ends of the strap have been in contact with the body, where I tuck the lead through the strap and where my wrist rests on the upper body. This could only have been avoided by not playing it, or sticking bits of felt over those areas!

I've noticed a trend of badly "reliced" basses on ebay. Presumably done by some bloke in his garage, taking a belt sander to cheap Squier basses in order to make them look "just like" vintage Fenders. In fact they look like they've been attacked with power tools (they have) and often feature ridiculous amounts of rust on the metal parts. The question is: What's a normal amount of wear on a well used working bass? Sheehan's "Wife" and Rory's strat are back to the bare wood, but Geddy's '72 Jazz has only a small amount of visible wear (ironically, his new Jaco Jazzes have much more!) I know the laquer used on old Fenders was a lot thinner/less hard wearing than modern equivalents, but for a real working bass to look like the reliced versions, it would have to be seriously misused.
He is doing that but I'm not sure about that being the only reason. The volume of his track is just really quiet to me.
Yes, he is mixed very, very low. It was a controversial issue at the time of release, with Hetfield/Ulrich, saying it was just the sound they were going for. Some expressed the opinion that it was to do with emotional issues following the death of Cliff Burton. I believe there are a series of videos on youtube called 'Justice for Jason', which attempt to remix the tracks, with more bass.

Nevermind guitar, there's a book called 'How the Fender bass chnaged the world' by Jim Roberts. I think the basic reasoning is that electric bass was the final, essential piece in the puzzle of small rock n roll groups, such as Elvis and his band. The rest is history.

Isn't chucking essentially pick style, without a pick?
I like BRX's suggestion, but another option with strap locks is to put the strap on the bass as normal, then put the strap locks on the button after. Less secure than BRX's permanent option, but more secure than attaching the locks to the strap and using them in the normal way.
Something I have advocated for years, after a strap pin sheared in half due to metal against metal wear and tear from the normally fitted strap locks.

My Planet waves clip on sometimes takes a while to detect E. It's also a bit of a struggle finding a spot for it on a Tele headstock with a D-tuner.

Oasis - Whats The Story Morning Glory Album
arthurhenry replied to Hobbayne's topic in General Discussion
I love Oasis. As Mentioned earlier, Noel wrote some fantastic songs, and that's what the band is all about / the tunes. The bass parts on the early albums are not worth talking about. But to be honest, I'd rather listen to the Oasis albums than listen to something from one if the musician-magazine lauded artists like Matthew Garrison and suchlike.
"Guigsy" was featured on the cover of Bassist at the time of the band's height. Interestingly, they never kept up their coverage of his playing, though they deemed him worthy of the cover at the time. -
I like this too, except when there's a four or five hour wait to go on stage.

When I was a lot younger, I would sometimes play very busily over the top of tracks at home, in order to develop my knowledge of the fingerboard and phrasing. The difference is; back then it wasn't posible (thank goodness) to film oneself and share it with the entire world, in order to let them know how good you think you are. By the way, is the title of this thread supposed to be: "What's your definition of busy?"?

Can the X Factor judges hear what we hear on the TV?
arthurhenry replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
I'm really confused about Barlow. One moment he saying its a singing contest, the next he's saying it's not a singing contest, they're looking for the x-factor. If the judges don't actually know what they're judging on what's the point.
To make an entertainment programme with mass appeal, in order to sell high cost advertising space. -
Can the X Factor judges hear what we hear on the TV?
arthurhenry replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
It's a TV programme. It's scripted, edited, acted and produced in the same way as Coronation street, On the buses, or the News at ten. I'm sure they do what they need to in order to stay on the right side of the law as far as people paying to vote is concerned, but it's just an entertainment show for idiots. Do people really think the whole thing was put together in order to discover talent? -
Any tips on how to remember your songs.
arthurhenry replied to Highfox's topic in General Discussion
I've never understood the "No Music" unwritten rule that is around popular music. It seems to me it is the only form that thinks you should remember a full set. I play Tuba in brass bands they would never do a gig without music, so why is it as a rock bass player I'm expected to do this ? ???? BIGd
I've never understood the rule that brass bands and orchestras must use sheet music. Why don't they just learn the songs? Do they really still need the sheet music at the end of a 30 date tour?
