1. I'm 39. I realised 12 or so years ago that the most important thing to me was just to be playing music live in front of people as often as possible and not worry about any notion of "making it". There is no "way" of making it, no set formula to follow. Many, many successful musicians who have "made it" will say that it happened only because they just kept playing year after year and were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time on one or more occasions. The point is: anything can happen, anytime, but it might not - just keep playing.
2. Chuck Panozzo, brilliant player but highly overlooked.
3. Cigarette vending machines banned from today. In England.
4.
Mmm interesting point. When you say "musician" do you mean professional?
Not neccessarily. You can still be dedicated and devoted to an instrument, be the best you can be and feel like a musician, even if you don't make a living at it. Or you can just do it for a laugh.
5. It's a clash of different approaches/attitudes to music. If you want to be a musician, you play/practice everyday full stop. If it's just for fun, you don't need to do that. The trouble is, in the area between amatuer/semi pro/pro the two approaches sometimes mix.
6. Great to see mentions of John Mole and Rick Kemp. I'll add John Glascock (Tull) and Jonathan Noyce (Tull, Gary Moore, Archive). Also, Mike Howlett (Steve Hillage, Gong).
7.
Really? I'm surprised to hear that. I've heard a few bits from the Animals tour with some great playing by Rog
Yes, Gilmour wrote a letter to Bass player a few years back detailing who played what. Apparently Waters just didn't much feel like playing bass at the time, prefering rhythm guitar.
8. Almost all the bass on Animals is Gilmour too. I believe Waters only plays bass on sheep, except the end.
9. "Can I have eggs, sausage, chips and beans?"
10. Bristol show was fantastic. Hard to imagine this band doing a bad show. Billy was on great form, plenty of (dare I say) overplaying, but all in the name of entertainment/excitement. Would have been nice to hear a few more from the first album, but no complaints. 2hr show.
11. Flea is featured in "I'm a runner" on the back page of this month's Runner's world magazine, should you want to sneak a look in WHSmiths. I've got a good 35 mins on him in his marathon and half marathon times, should I ever need to run away from him, perhaps after telling him his band are a bit rubbish.
12. Probably dry solder joints. A simple job for a repair man, but might take a while to find the joints in need of repair, which could add to the cost.
13. Why not just tattoo the tab? It's almost as though you feel it's inferior to notation. (Cheeky, Smiley face).
14. Couldn't help thinking about how much his apartment must stink of cigareete smoke and how all his precious artefacts and daggars must be covered in nicotine stains. Yuck.
15. Xanadu by Rush is a quarter tone sharp, apparently sped up as they were running out of room on the record. Lukily, due to the tape speed, when I recorded it from CD to casette, it came out in pitch. I also had a record player which played a semitone fast - very useful for learning VH and GnR songs!
16.
When Steve Morse worked as an airline pilot, he used to drive 100 miles to work along a straight desert road. He told Guitar Player that he took his guitar on the journey to work with him and practised whilst he was driving, controliing the vehcile with his knees. THAT is practising!!
This is why one should never get on a plane being piloted by Steve Morse.
17. I practice a lot, but I know I'm not the player I would be if I'd had the oppurtunity to play full time from a young age as many of the players we love have. Constant gigs, recording, in a craetive environment all the time, noodling away on a video shoot, bass in your hands 8 hrs a day etc etc. No amount of practice can replictae that I'm sure.
18. Bob Carolgees' fretless playing is awesome - a unique left hand technique.
19. Sarzo's rock star looks and posing have served him well over the years. He replaced Bob Daisley (a far superior player) in Ozzy's band and then replaced Neil Murray ( a far superior player) in Whitesnake.
20. She should watch it - by the look of the singer, he ate his last two bass players.
21. Drum solo.
22. Just play the whole of Back in Black.
23. The main difference I've noticed in players is not the amount they practice or varying degrees of natural ability: it's different levels of passion for music. Some people enjoy music and like the idea of playing it - it's a fun hobby. Others cannot live without playing music and expressing themselves in that way.
24. I've done way more than 10,000 hours practice in the last 24 years. The result? Pubs still pay me the same money they did 20 years ago and no one takes any notice of my playing. Still, at least I know I put the work in.
25. "You can't leave until the DJ finishes at 2am, my punters didn't pay to have to avoid you carrying your gear across the dancefloor."
