Was funny - just before we shot this, I even said at the time of the incident, "watch me do something really stupid now..." - and then I did. As you can tell, this is a brain dump really to help people new to the game - so there's probably nothing in there that you aren't already aware of... but you know. As I say, also got some other stuff coming up to go along with this video... and we've done loads of theory stuff too.

IEM's - to Amp or not to Amp - thats my Question
EBS_freak replied to Swijn's topic in Accessories and Misc
Save your back. Get as small a rig as possible. Ampless means less mush going into open mics on stage and a better sound outfront (assuming your PA can take bass OK). DI straight into the PA. If you want some sort of drive/speaker emulation or something like that, the Helix Stomp is a good bet. -
Perfect - realistically, the only things that may change are the open mics... but even then, those changes are mostly minimal. The other great thing about running things like "Helii" is that you can get a great sounding stereo mix, even if it's mono out front. Having two amps on stage and micing them up... well, it's always going to be a bit of a compromise. Its the same with keys - mono out front - but having a Hammond stereo Leslie in your ears... well, that's cool as.

I’m guessing pretty much all of this has been covered in the thread already... but I did a “new to IEMs video”... lots of content in there, including dinosaurs. Don’t worry, got some on the wireless, mic source and stuff coming too. Just an unscripted brain dump really... but enjoy (if you have an hour to spare!)
-
Diva most probably vs singer who knows what they want and get on with it.
-
Total noobs then. The idea of an ears mix, is that with all the close micing/DI there should be no to limited changes and the venue becomes insignificant.
-
The EQ is one that I think will be really powerful... should help with notching troublesome frequencies as well as giving some good instantly recallable tone sculpting options. On paper, gets a big thumbs up from me.

How good does this look? This looks like exactly the thing I've been looking for for ages... https://www.boss.info/uk/products/eq-200/ In fact, all the new 200 series stuff looks pretty ace...

Meanwhile, in a bar in south London, 500 Superdry tee wearers enjoy a quiet natter over a pint. -
Huh?
-
Yeah. But ringing is cool. Or something like that.
-
Agreed - ask any aspiring rock star kid whether they would want a wall of Marshall’s or a stage show akin to Muse... well, I think I already know which answer is going to get the votes....
-
And Slash is a JH Audio IEM user. His ears were OK 😜 (although they are probably shot already)
-
I wouldn't agree with your opening statement at all. I don't think that anybody is questioning his ability as a player. I personally don't care what he does to get his sound... but I wouldn't want to be in his audience for the reasons cited in his thread. The health of my ears is worth more than risking permanent damage...

I just knew the Dave Grohl fact would be in there! 😛 -
Digitech Freqout. Mind you, the dinosaurs would probably thing that's not rock n roll either.

Indeed. Original owner only. Once redeemed, that's it.

Isn't it the law now that in order to wear a Nirvana/Kurt tee, you have to be 13 and have no idea what the whole grunge era was about....? The thinking man wears the Hanson Nirvana tee. Again, those that know, know. -
I kinda get the, "I own the vintage amp" - but they tend to be unreliable as they age... and for some amps, things like the original transformers and certain other components are hard to source and replace like for like. They'd be better doing their thing in the studio without having to suffer the ordeal of having a touring life. As for Angus' hearing... well, if I was a betting man... I would put money on him not having a clean sheet when it came to passing an audio test. Having said that, I do recall him being really particular about using a vintage wireless due to the impact that it had on his tone. Hang on... Yes, the Schaffer wireless. And check here - https://solodallas.com/the-schaffer-replica - somebody makes a pedal to impact the tone in the same way as the wireless system. Anyway... to the Kemper... You can do better than that. When you profile, you profile the sum of the x number of amps. That will give you one profile that models the sum of those x number of amps. The only reasons for having two Kempers would be for redundancy. Then if he wants stage sound, it would be PA cabs housed in a Marshall cab... with a SM57 with a cable plugged into it just to keep the charade going. Of course, it could be all nonsense... I mean, take Steve Winwood, somebody who has considerable hearing loss and what he has to say about his Kemper. "Kemper has revolutionized my thinking on guitar amplification. The sounds are completely true to life, matching faultlessly the models they are profiling, and unlike other amplifiers it is not subject to mic placement or level. A phenomenal achievement!" - is that a strong endorsement? Its not far from asking Stevie Wonder what he thinks of the new paintjob on his piano.
-
I’d just profile the overly hot biased amp and run a Kemper with some clean poweramps. I could put my feet up then and not have to worry about the nonsense of switching amps in and out. ”Yeah Angus, you’re good to go” How can Angus tell the difference anyway? If that’s how he runs his back line, he’s borderline deaf anyway.

Here's some more modern day lovers of backline....

Nobody mentioned the sidefills yet...

Yeah brilliant!! https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/hear-brian-johnson-talk-hearing-loss-ive-had-a-pretty-good-run-175587/ “I was getting worried because my right ear is my good ear,” Johnson said. “My left ear is just about totally deaf. And when we got there, that’s when Dr. Chang found out that the fluids had crystalized and had been eating away at my ear. So my good ear, I lost – I don’t know what percentage but it was enough to make things very difficult. So they worked on me.”

If your measure of cool is Nicky Wire... then yeah... cool.

Incidentally, I'm surprised that nobody has commented on the cut of the tee. It's a bit Al Murray isn't it?
