1.
You'll get no argument from me on that.... I have a thumpinator
Interesting that the roll off is apparently at 30hz on the thumpinator - still lower than most bass cabs can reliably reproduce at any noticeable volume. It will get the fundamental of a B string through - which to be honest, is probably not wanted on most stages anyway. Keep the sub frequencies for the PA - and even then, a lot of smaller venues won't thank for you subs that low. In fact, you got to be running some pretty decent subs to get anywhere near 30hz at -3db at any decent SPL anyway. The real chest thumping stuff is circa 65Hz - the resonant frequency of your rib cage... so you know where to peak your kick drum's eq...
2.
'Couldn't get it right' by Fun Lovin' Criminals
Ugh.
3.
Thus my previous " Fr800 goes to 42 Hz (-3db)."
True - but it also goes lower... but with more than a -3dB roll off. I'm not sure you want to be going as low as 42 Hz.. your sound is going to be pretty swampy on stage.
4. Reidmar is a good head - out the box, it would appear tonally different to the classic 450, a lot more hifi, although it can be toned down to where you would be used to.
5.
Not all PA Speaker go low enough Hz do they?
I said decent!
6.
If you are running sequences behind your band then you can just have the sequencer make the changes as and when you like.
I'm not running sequences - but it means I can remotely change patches and have it in a remote looper... all via MIDI. Don't know if you have seen the Katy Perry and Kemper video - they run the whole lot on a sequence, with all the patch changes for both the guitarists (one on Kemper, one on Axe FX if I recall) and all the keyboards changes from that sequence.
7. Whats your budget? Any decent PA speaker will likely do you better than the majority of those marketed as FRFR cabs.
8.
If the £ / $ exchange rate ever got back anywhere near where it was a few years back it would certainly make an interesting project. Warmoth Jazz body routed for a MM pickup, Lane Poor Legacy MM Pickup, 3 band EQ and a Status Graphite neck
I wonder if Modulus are ever going to do their aftermarket necks - I loved the dancing ladies design (or whatever it was called). I had a Status neck - so desperately wanted to like it... but bad experiences has somewhat tarnished the whole idea.
9. DR Lowriders here... as a counterargument to the above, I think they are more aggressive than the Rotos!
10.
From Sade to Flea - just goes to show the versatility of a Stingray.
Good meaty tones and then the bits of slap... really cuts nice. Solo at 5 minute mark. Anyway back to Flea.
11.
SA Soleman...already in my buying list
Is it the SA Soleman which enables that... or will any standard MIDI controller do it?
12. Hang on, I didn't think you could do remote changes via MIDI...! This could change things...
13. Paul Denman is my benchmark when it comes to Stingrays... his tone with Sade when I saw them live was thunderous. I don't really get the Flea tone chasing... but agree, Flea will always, for me, be associated with that MM pickup in the sweetspot... no matter what piece of wood or carbon hybrid it is attached to. I think the appeal for Fender Flea basses with the MM setup would actually limit sales to the die hard Flea fans... whereas the stacked knob jazz that is currently up for grabs is appealing to a far wider ranger of players - both Flea and non Flea fans. Interesting to see what Fender do... but I suspect they would build you a Flea bass as above... if you go via the custom shop... otherwise, just get a body, have it routed accordingly and painted and stick a Fender neck on it. Job done.
14. Drums is easy if you want to keep it cheap - kick drum mic and overhead condenser (those small pencil sized ones - but remember that they will require phantom power from your desk. You haven't stated what desk you are running but most will send phantom power). Pretty much anything will do... red5audio is as good as anything (if not better than most) for not a great amount of outlay... and cheap enough to mic the whole kit.
15.
possibly, and they do take a few hours to 'burn in'... but it was the drums that sounded worse to me... just lacking a bit of punch compared to what I was expecting. A bit 'muffled' and distant in a way. I need to try them properly, and also make sure the buds I choose are the correct fit as that makes a huge difference.
Muffled and distant does not sound right at all. Defo check that you have the right buds and no ear wax in them, which can mess with things.
16. mcnach - interesting approach, I'm very interested to see what your results are like - especially with no cab sim on the end of that monitor feed. As an alternative... and I've talked about these in the thread before... but if you haven't considered, it may be worth while getting one or more of these if you start to get serious about your monitoring when you are utilising a third party front of house. One of these https://www.studiospares.com/Microphones/Splitter-Combiners/Studiospares-RED800-Mic-Splitter_458950.htm and say a cheaper digital mixer such as - XR12 (will give you 2 auxes and a l/r mix that can be used for monitoring) or a XR16 will give you 4 auxes and a l/r mix (that can also be used for monitoring) will enable you to plug your band into your monitoring rig and send a replication of whats on the XLRs to the front of house from the splitter. This will give every band member their own mix that is controllable from your android/iphone/pc A cheap 8 way snake from thomanns will plug your splitter into the foh box. If you need more than 8 channels on your monitoring, you can always double up your splitter and snakes... but obviously you are limited to the number of channels your digital mixer can take.
17. I saw the Studiospares one in a rehearsal room this week. They look to be the ticket - thanks for the heads up, 6 ordered! Thanks for the link markstuk!
18. It sounds like it's not a volume thing that you are having problems, more of a "fatness" thing. Have you tried to make the jazz bass "bloom" more, via something like a compressor or overdrive (when I say overdrive, I don't mean distortion, I mean more like the soft drive you'd get from tubes - it thickens the sound before hitting that audible distortion)?
19. I love a good DI - I'm now running a Kemper straight out of the PA... and having that in your inears is bliss.
20. The trouble is with these things, is that you can never really test them out in anger to see how well they are going to work for you. A grand is a lot of money to pot luck on.
21. Utterly disgraceful. I've never ordered from them because of all the horror stories.
22.
I'm very pleased with a K&M boom stand I bought a couple of years back.
But which one? K&M can get very pricey indeed!
23. As the topic title... I'm looking to buy a few boom stands to mic up a percussionist that will be on some gigs with me... but don't want to spend a load of money... but don't want to buy complete crap!
