1.
Yeah, we play a range of gigs, from acoustic duo and trio to three and four piece setups, some with keyboards, some not, so we use more or less PA depending. We also use a range of deps, and getting everyone on board and sorted out can be more hassle than it's frankly worth. With a stable band lineup (hah!) and a more fixed infrastructure it'd be great, but that's just not where we (I) am at the moment. To reiterate, though, it's a great way to play, and if you can get the technology ducks in a row, it's very good indeed.
Funnily enough, I depped with a band two weekends ago and I turned up and I was handed a Fischer headphone amp and a pair of 215s. Not really keen on used 215s but I used my inears with the headphone amp and it sounded great. A couple of weeks before that, I depped for a band that I hadn't even met before and they had invested in 4 PSM200s... the bass player simply left me his wireless pack to use for the gig... I think if it's seen as a component of the PA (a monitor replacement) IEMs are set to become more popular. My inears rig for example (housed in a shallow 6u rack case) - replaces 12 monitor wedges.
 2. So 64 Audio's Adel is now named Apex. Wonder why that is? Maybe as they are probably paying handsomely for the license, they want to get away from the Asius branding and push the technology under their own name?
 3.
I'm by no means an authority on this though. Check out the thread that's about 17 pages long titled "in ear monitors, help needed..." Or something along those lines. Plenty of good info and options in there!
Link to thread - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/205633-in-ear-monitors-help-needed/ I know it's a long read - but well worthwhile. It'll give you a great idea of exactly what's possible.
 4.
Yeah the first bit is obvious.
You say that but you would be surprised at home many people think IEMs are for vocal only and spend their life turning up their backline or wear one IEM in and one IEM out. So yes, obvious to some, far from obvious for others.
The second bit is not always a fact there's loads of great sounding bands that have plenty of on stage volume. I understand the concept but it just seems wrong. I know things are pretty reliable but what if something goes wrong, what if you find you monitoring goes down, what if the pa goes down and your in a situation where a backline could of got you through a gig? Etc etc I just think its a back up and as equipment is getting lighter its not so much of a pain. And you can always turn your backline down if its messing with the sound out front. So imo yeah you don't need an amp at all but might you need one maybe and bands with nothing on the stage look so boring lol.
There are lots of great sounding bands with plenty of stage volume. There are more than the fair share of bands which sound crap with plenty of stage volume. I would wager the chances of a front of house mix sounding great would be greatly improved with less volume and consequently less bleed across mics, whether they be vocal mics or instrument mics. You'll have a lot less problems with feedback too. The what ifs are applicable to any situation. How many people carry around a spare PA - just in case it goes down? No PA, you've got no vocals... and with no vocals, you have no gig anyway. As for the monitoring going down... well, you can get a cable and headphone amp for less than £40. You can get that setup. I reckon I could buy a few of those for less than a price of an amp if I was that paranoid. If I needed to scrape through a gig, I could but say a spare set of shure 215s or even use some iPhone headphones. It may not be perfect but it would get me through the gig. To poo poo the idea of IEM is a bit of a dinosaur view on the way that gigging is going. Yes, theres plenty of guys that refuse to embrace IEM - that's fine. Nobody is twisting anybody's arm. And do amps on stage really matter to anybody apart from gear stalkers? If the audience are getting bored... it's not because of a lack of backline to look at.
 5.
Is there a reason you wouldn't want an amp? Even something small but half capable. Seems with all these tiny heads and lightweight cabs its not a massive hassle having a lightweight setup too. Why not have both? in ear monitors and a little rig.
Because with decent fitting inears you wouldn't hear your rig anyway. Less sound on stage = cleaner mix out front.
 6.
Well i have nothing to compare the UE900s to really, apart from standard headphones. Which isnt really fair. But i was impressed! Really impressed. To be fair the seal is good, 90% of the time. Just now and again when i go to speak or sing etc, i lose the seal. Cant complain at all really, just being picky (and justifying the custom moulds ) Yeh i would have thought you're right regarding the pre amp on the X18. I think it will take a bit of research, and trying a few things out. It's all good though, i look forward to all the experimentation with my new bit of kit
If you try your standard phone headphones (e.g. those apple phones that people seem to rate) in the band situation, you should discover their shortcomings pretty quickly - particularly if you are running uncompressed bass. When singing - yeah, that's a problem for some people too - if you go custom, make sure you go for an open mouth impression if you are the lead singer - or semi open impression if you are a backing vocalist. Justification of the customs is fully understandable - I just don't think you can get anywhere near the seal of customs with universals. Experimentation is key - get to grasps with what you have got before spending anything - especially things like Avalons!
 7.
Tried the set up at last nights practice. I'm converted!! The seal wasn't 100% all the time from the standard memory foam tips, so will look to custom moulds next, but for the meantime, bloody hell what a difference! Don't need a speaker anymore so wondering if i even need an amp, or if its a better idea to purchase a quality Pre-amp and have that driven by the PAs power amp. Don't even know if that's possible! A Whole new world of opportunity has been opened to me
Woop! Welcome to the new world. Glad to hear that there has been a revelation. I'm surprised you can't find a set of tips out of that lot that will seal properly - however, your ears may be like mine - completely odd shaped and nothing stays in there (apart from my customs). At least if you go for a reshell you haven't thrown away money as you can still make use of the UE900s as the donor - so all is good! (Can't really do that with 215s!) Talking of which - how are you finding the UE900s? You have enough bass - without any signs of struggling? I think you'll be stoked with the dual lows, especially when you take them out on a gig. If you do go custom moulds, I think you will be further impressed - the customs give an extra something that you can't even begin to contemplate until you have them - perfect seal, greater isolation so you can control your mix even better - and crucially even further extension of the bass (the better the seal, the better the bass response). It's crazy that people balk at the cost of IEMs - but when you consider what people spend on Bergs, Vanderklays etc... and just use them for a monitor on stage (with the PA doing all the work out front) IEMs can actually be pretty cheap and actually deliver you a far superior sound at a far safer, more enjoyable volume. I'm kind of jealous of people going through the revelation and seeing how good in ear monitoring can be. I'm pretty far along my IEM journey now but have found it to be extremely addictive chasing the perfect onstage mix in my ears. Nothing compares to that first gig I did with a proper IEM setup though. Game changer. Even years on, I still love it and am completely addicted. re: preamp, unless you are recording, I would wager that the inbuilt preamp on your X18 is infinitely more tweakable than any analogue preamp. What I would do, is either physically split your bass into two channels on your desk, or digital replicate the input of one channel onto another channel on your desk (through routing). That way, you can eq just your bass for front of house and eq for your inears independently - this is obviously different to the global EQ that you have on your aux out. You'll find that the sound that you EQ out the front is not ideal for inears - you'll probably want to curb the treble... and the bass - well, that depends upon if you are running subs out front or not. Same with guitar too - guitar can sound thin through inears so make use of the processing on the desk on a channel strictly for your inears. Above all, keep experimenting.
 8.
I want to pick up a reverb pedal, the ebs dynaverb and the tc electronic hall of fame have my attention. The hall of fame seems more versatile out of the two. I have only been able to check out video's online but am still unsure of which to go for. Anyone here tried one or both and have an opinion? any other pedals worth a look at? cheers
Absolutely check out the MXR M300 reverb too. 9.
If someone is not interested in hearing any other options other than the two options they initially supply......don't ask on a forum Si
Good point! Likewise, if somebody has a different opinion that would seemingly go against the grain, accept that people do have different opinions/experiences that may not adhere to your experience/opinion/liking.
 10. Buy a Shuker! ...or am I a few years late for that one?
 11. http://www.ebay.co.u...S587xdKegR4m6Pg 9v 2A I also wouldn't worry too much about the Chinese thing given that they seem to manufacture most of the PSUs out there. I remember the Jonny Shreadfreak vs Diago PSUs- both exactly the same unit - one was a tenner, one was a whole lot more (40-50 quid?). I found the same unit again for four quid. All they do is buy up a Chinese manufactured PSU and stick a brand name label on it.
 12. I never subscribed to the Bartilini = dark logic. One of those internet trends spoken by people that have no experience probably.
 13. This may be your best option!
 14. I was looking at leisure batteries for you - but you are going to be lucky to get even an hour and a half out of even the top ones for your amp. If you an amp that pulled less power you may be able to get circa 3.5 hours. for example, Reidmar 250 with 400W Max demand with a 12v 250ah battery - 3.12 hours worse case (because I would assume that it doesn't pull 400W constantly). Here's a battery - you could get two I guess... as you will lose a bit on inverter conversion (which you'd also have to price up). http://www.alpha-batteries.co.uk/250ah-banner-energy-bull-leisure-battery/ Not cheap.
 15.
Yep 100% - just looking for bulk order discounts now!
Difficult. I'm in a similar boat at the moment. 40, 60, 80, 100 but then I order a separate 125. That seems near impossible to do currently. Looks like I'll be phoning the distribution guys for advice.
 16.
The trick with Facebook is to tag loads of people into the initial poster / Flyer then be relentless on making build up posts as the gigs draw nearer. If done right all those tagged will get the updates
Which is great until the tagged people get so pissed off with your marketing techniques they end up ditching you.
 17. So you are a DR convert now? Bloody love those strings!
 18. Hmm. The sire not delivering really surprises me. What's the point at which it falls down?
 19. Quieter in what way? Fan replacement? Lowering the noise floor? Not that I'd ever class this amp as noisy?
 20.
Ooh that's posh they've got decking and everything...Got an outdoor gig tomorrow. I can guarantee there won't be decking.
You should play some of the knuckle dragger festivals I play. Plenty of decking going on.
 21.
Nah it just gets in the way of the football on the telly behind us.
You should up your game and start playing some large festivals then.
 22.
No point being the richest bloke in the grave yard!
Next time I see you, ask me about the "shrine"
 23. That's going to be sweet. I'm expecting pics of your new gear! (It's been a while since we've had some pics on this thread). Congratulations on your purchases and I'm waiting to hear your feedback from your first outing! Those UE900s are going to give you the bass that I know you are going to crave. Just make sure you get a good seal and go with the idea that the only things that you can hear are what you put in your mix. Remember your auxes need to be sent pre fader too. There will be a setting to select this on the Behringer interface. Big thumbs up.
 24.
It's the first thing I ask for a £250 split five ways pub gig "is there a steam room?, my pro guys I put together wouldn't touch a gig without one". ?* 8888*680s
What? You haven't got your own flightcased steam room?
 25.
as long as there's still enough power for Chris Martins steam room ....... yes thats right they tour their own steam room .....
Who wouldn't?
