"Could you turn your backline down a bit ? "
EBS_freak replied to JohnFitzgerald's topic in Amps and Cabs
Yep... but I'd probably be glad about it as well...tbh. If I quote a price and someone comes back way off that price... then you walk away, surely. There will always be someone cheaper anyway... so to me, it is the same thing. As for gear at an event, I'd bill for that. There is minimum spec and I get the point about gear that has had a hard life, but this is all about having dealings with people who are on the same page, IMO...and what is required/desired on the gig As it happens, I'm looking for some high quality monitors..and by that I mean better than QSC.. so Martin, Turbosound or DB etc and I'll use them for vox out front or stage monitors I'll either hire them to the band or I'll sub them to a P.A company as there are never enough quality monitors to go around,I've found, and the local venue can't afford to have more than 6 of them. I'd sub to them when a touring act comes through because their riders always specify DB model or Equivalent..
This post is just very odd. You'll hire your monitors to a PA company? What sort of two bit PA companies are running round your way? Hiring stuff off you? Professional PA company? Nah. I just don't believe it... or don't believe you are dealing with a pro PA company. Hire to another band? I can believe that one more... but most bands won't want to spend a penny... and will do without. As for "affording more than 6 monitors"? I think you'll find it more to do with the fact that even high end analogue desks generally top out at 6 aux mixes. It's only when you get into the realms of digital that the aux count gets significantly higher. And if you need more than 6 monitors with your band at The Tickled Trout, you are doing something very wrong. Having that many monitors and a number of open mics in an enclosed space is going to be feedback central, unless you are carrying around some serious 31 band eq stuff for each monitor - which of course, I guess you ask about also? Am sorry to say this - but I think your posts are harmful and misleading to those embarking on their bass journey... because the reality is nothing like what you paint. The most hardened professionals I know, are out on tours playing stadiums, yes - REAL stadiums (not some figment of the imagination or some warped view on what their gig at the working men's club was) and are equally at home at the Tickled Trout - and they certainly make zero phone calls about anything. You just get on with the job and do it with whatever is available to them - if that's no monitoring, so be it. I'm surprised that if your approach to gigging is like this, you do any gigs at all? Yes, by all means, carry around your own PA, lots of people do - but seriously... this expectation on gear and PA at the venues you are playing - it's ridiculous. -

I'm wondering if I actually live in a completely different world... Kids, don't turn down gigs. Keep music live. Don't be a monitor snob. -
Take a rig for the stage and make alternative provisions, That is the wonder of telephone calls ahead If the P.A was booked by someone else, then I'd mention it wasn't very good... If I didn't mention it, the vocalist would, more than likely, so it isn't something that wouldn't be commented on. And certain guys wouldn't work that way again so I'd probably lose them off the gig So, it is just easier doing things properly in the first place.
"You don't think the gear is suitable? No worries, we can just get another band." -
Yes, it is something you learn pretty early on. That is also why you ask. IMO.
And what do you do about it if said monitors are confirmed as pants? -

When JTUK plays at the Tickled Trout, he will only play a MusicMan Stingray. In fact, he wasn't happy with the monitor mix (when is he ever?) so had to keep asking for moray in his monitor. -

I head that Gospel groupers play there. They've all recently found cod and become prawn again Christians. -
I'm sure he could tackle it if he's practised his scales.
Maybe we can lure him back into the thread to confirm this line of thinking. -

I thought the thread was a bit carp to begin with, however I'm beginning to look at it at a different angler and in hindsight, there's always a plaice for threads like this. -
I'm pretty sure punters can't tell the difference between the sound of a bass guitar and an explosion in a dildo factory.
i'm trying to imagine what the latter sounds like. -
Monitor setup at my next gig, should do fine. (I'm doing a grand total of 6 gigs this year, but they all really count.) I've copied this straight off the venue page. :-) And yes, I've done loads of backline only, squeezed into a corner type gigs. After a lifetime of this crap, I'm entitled to gloat at a shot at a proper venue. Don't worry, I won't get carried away.
I invested a huge amount (to me) in pa and we have a great system for what we do. What I wouldn't invest in is the monitors unless it was one just for me. If the guys in the band want a monitor then they can pull their wallets out and buy their own and I'll give them whatever mix they want. I'm very tempted to go in ear monitor though for my hearing's sake.
I had the very same conversation with a friend of mine. Band members should be keen to invest in their own monitoring. It makes me mad that singers won't put a finger in their pocket for a mic, let a lone a monitor or PA. In ears - best thing I ever did. Check out the big in ears thread if you haven't already. -
Yeah, probably but i read it as a blanket statement. Not everyone uses a full pro PA so having a loud back line/rig is needed. Some people seem to miss this point.
You are right - I made this point earlier. Nobody seems to want to invest or have ownership of a PA! -
Tsk! Can you imagine a professional band relying on Ampeg equipment!? Mad!!
Stan at the Tickled Trout would turn you away for even darkening their doors with an Ampeg. -
A cool solution is to carry your own monitoring rig around with you... (digital mixer, IEM systems and a bank of XLR splitters - so you can split the signal between your monitoring rack and front of house). Your sound is entirely under your control... and for those looking after front of house, nothing changes and you save them the hassle of doing monitor mixes.
We never play through a big PA, and the few times i have the tone coming out of the monitors was not my tone, so they couldn't possible replace my rig and in no way was it enjoyable.
Depends upon the monitors... there's bass cabs and bass cabs. There's monitors and monitors. Of course, you need time to set up the monitors to get the tone to be as exactly like you want (that's if the monitor is even capable of doing that). - and most of the time, monitor mixes are "can you hear yourself? cool... lets go with that then". When you have the luxury of time, you can do an awesome mix on a monitor (gear allowing). I favour IEM mixes because there is nothing more constant! (And I don't end up with a whistle in my lugs). But yeah, nothing less enjoyable than trying to pump some bass through a weedy 8" monitor.
