1.
Do you mean the highest possible delay? 10ms seems a bit short - less than half a wavelength of an open B. I can understand it might be a problem with a higher frequency things or drums, but would it really be noticeable on a bass?
Remember when you are hearing a low B, you are hearing the harmonic content also, not just the fundamental "B". Anything above 10ms in a close monitoring situation is a nightmare... Your striking of the string will be noticeably out with the rest of the music. For maximum laughs, you should try singing against a >10ms delay when you have got a feed direct into your ears.
2.
Specs say this one will go down to 5ms
Doesn't look good for guys that want to use a lot of 2.4Ghz gear... But having said all this, for the average weekend warrior, this is going to be just fine.
3. Latency figures not good - run this into a digital desk (which has its own latency) with in ears and you'll soon be having problems. 10ms is given as the lowest acceptable delay for use and having this wireless take up to 8ms...? Hmm.
4. re: my point why bass players need a dual in the low. The 535s will give you what I would say is "adequate" head room in the bass. Appreciate that everything comes at a cost though. Depending upon what you are running into your ears, a compressor usually will help give you a little more headroom but I still felt it was a compromise.
5. What you plugging in there at the moment?
6. Other options is that you could try EQing to give more cut to the vocals?
7. If you are using the PA for just vocals, a sub isn't really going to get you anywhere over and above as to where you are now. The sub would be just an expensive high pass filter for the vocals. What are your tops? Upgrading your existing tops may be the way to go. If you are looking at carrying around three boxes, the preferable choice would be to carry around two beefier, more capable tops - say a pair of 15s. A sub is not really going to help your bass out much either because most of what you are hearing is the overtones and not the fundamental.
8.
Both used Trace back in the day so the MK500 follows that tradition. Found the quote from '04. "I once told Mark King, 'the trouble with your band is you need a bass player!'" Fair enough
MK has got bass on a backing track. That close enough?
9. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/205633-in-ear-monitors-help-needed/ Have a read through the above thread! Most if not all your questions will be answered in there!
10. Wireless or wired? A lot of wireless unit shave this feature built in already... But if you want to go no frills/thrills route, e.g. no limiter (but you do have control over the EQ in your ears but any tweaks of the EQ would also sent to front of house - so additional tweaking here and there may be required at that point. (You could get a simple XLR splitter and split one signal into your desk and one to front of house. http://www.thomann.de/gb/yamaha_mg06.htm Mic goes into portable desk. Plug your headphones in and control you level to your ears. Use the main out to the main rig. What's your budget? Guess you are going for cheap as possible? Wired?
11.
Would love to know why he took bass up.
It wasn't for the ladies. Rumour has it that Harry is a lead vocalist / lead guitarist.
12. I believe they are relocating, not closing for good.
13. http://www.rolls.com/productImage.php?pid=RPQ160b I've been using digital mixing desks for some times and one of this things that I really love about them is the uber powerful EQ shaping thats built into them. Cut and boost, frequency and Q for typically 4 bands with LPF and HPF. So, I actually set about looking for a digital pedal that maybe somebody has implemented that achieves what the digital desks do. I didn't find one. I know there are loads of channel strips and the like about... but this relatively cheap effort from Rolls, seems to be incredibly flexible on the tone shaping front. Anybody ever used one with their bass?
14. OK, from just being a player point of view, go self employed. You'll have to pay class 2 NIC and obviously be taxed on the earnings. The plus side is that you get tax relief on tools and expenses - e.g. mileage, basses, amps, mobile phone costs, insurance, etc... etc... Paying tax can be good because it gives you tax relief on your whole income if you start buying stuff - you can end up with a rebate at the end of the year. But remember... selling stuff also has an implication... With regards to being a business, you could have one person that runs the band as the business and pays the others as contractors... There is a disadvantage to this.... so.... OR you could all form a business with you as directors. Advantage of this is that you can pay yourself dividends which is more tax efficient. HOWEVER, make sure you draw up a a shareholders agreement that stipulates that if a member of the band no longer plays in the band, they have to relinquish the shares. Nobody likes a squatter expecting dividends. I'm not sure of how much money you are expected to earn but you may want to be wary of the VAT threshold. You may want to deliberately stay beneath that. There's ways around this but I'm not qualified to advise on this. In short, get yourself an accountant - they may seem expensive but they will save you far more than you will pay them. Hope this helps. Oh - and do your books as you go along. Much easier than trying to do it at the end of the year...
15. Going a little OT but in short, I can't see 2.4 causing you any problem... And given the fact that people are generally shifting to the 5ghz spectrum to utilise the high speed advantages that offers, I suspect the problem is, let's say, not going to get worse than it already is.
16. Agreed - routers should be configured on channels 1, 6 or 11 as they are the only channels that have no overlap frequency wise. Ideally you should be avoiding any frequency crossover by choosing a free channel but assuming your transmitter and receiver in close proximity, your signal power between the two devices *should* be more powerful than the ambient RF so your connection will hold over the other RF. Yes, the risk is there but in my experience, it's not really a problem. I've run ch38, 70 and 2.4ghz channels concurrently for years and 38 has never failed me, 70 has the odd issue (mostly due to venue microphones so a little co-ordination with yourself and the venue is required) and 2.4Ghz once as described at the TV studio. As an aside, high end wireless units also use encryption not only to safeguard the transmission payload, but the presence of an encryption key on the transmission ensures any rogue RF is rejected by the receiver (as the keys won't match). Of course, these units tend to be on Ch38 or other regulated channels though.
17. And here's me thinking that vanderklay is everybody's new beau.
18.
Thanks! So the mic as well as the wireless part is good? Time to break out the CC again...
Yes. It's a comparable to your standard dynamic mic you'd get. It's no Heil PR35 capsule but then again, most wireless mic capsules aren't.
19. This wifi talk is true but given that bigredx has been using his Sony unit at gigs without problems, it stands to reason that the mic will be similarly without problem. Conversely, the Sony build is better built than mics in the competing pricerange. I think that the stories of wifi interference within hotels etc are greatly exaggerated. Over 500 gigs in hotels and function venues in the last 3 years alone - I've only had problems once - in a TV studio that was running 8 wifi access points and over 50 channels of wireless. RF tastic!
