1. Apologies - the ones shown there may work. Necks that are attached using threaded inserts are generally these - http://www.tool-net.co.uk/data/tools/rofiinsw650.jpg I have seen a status neck that has had the above fitted... Or on fact, not fitted. I did a fair bit of research on the matter when I bought a status neck as I hate the tendency of a bolt on neck not being super solid.
2. Do not use threaded inserts. There's no give in the cf to allow it. Cf does not behave like wood in the slightest. You'll end up hashing it up and shattering all the polyester finish. The cf is rock solid and the screws will be enough to hold it - although I was never convinced it was a good idea. The screws literally go through the 7mm of so and then into a void. I always thought at least a block of wood in there would have been nice.
3. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/214429-wireless-systems-for-bass/ This may be a useful read
4. pssttt.... looks like they are back - even cheaper - http://www.thomann.de/gb/sony_dwz_b30gb_guitar_set.htm
5. RCF310 - even better if you can stretch to the RCF312. Audition them - you'll see that they simply blow the others out of the water. The can be used on their side as either a wedge or as front of house in the future - if you choose to buy a PA in the future.
6.
Was it Bernie Goodfellow that said the woods do make a difference but no two are the same even from the same type of wood so you can't 'spec' a type of wood for a type of tone making the whole argument basically a non starter? He said he doesn't know what it will sound like until he plugs it in didn't he? And the best sounding bass he made was made from pieces of scrap wood glued together for shits and giggles!
Pretty much - with his basses, the wood seems almost negligible. He says that through his experience of building, one piece of wood, even if seemingly identical to another piece, can make a bass sound different... However, as soon as you go active, he reckons it's 90% the electronics and 10% everything else. I seen to recall Martin at Sei has the same opinion. The only way you know how a bass is gonna sound is to play it once it's been made. You probably got a better chance of things sounding the same with say status. Probably also worth mentioning that tolerances in electronics and particularly the scatterwinding of pickups all adds to the complexity.
7. http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/128640-denon-ah-w150-exercise-freak-headphones-now-available-in-uk-with-orange-finish these are 32ms latency - still about 30ms too much....
8. In the case of an electric bass with a preamp... you could string a table up and put the electronics and pickups in it and it would sound pretty much the same as the bass the components came from. Would be a bit of a bastard to play though.
9.
(yes, Hipshot, I'm looking at you).
On the other hand, Hipshot was marvellous with me - they send me a whole loads of saddle bridges, grub screws and springs free of charge when I asked them for advice about an old bridge and intonation woes!
10.
Bit of advice needed here chaps... If I run a line straight from the DI out of my head to the desk and the soundguy (accidentaly) fires 48 volts of phantom power down the line can this damage my amp?
Only if there's something fundamentally flawed in the design of your amp.
11.
You have seen Nick's stingray he glued back together haven't you? I can happen although rare as hell.
Ah yes, some serious tone glues have been used in the construction of his stingray. The sound of wood? Nah, the sound of glue.
12.
Adding a top alone will add strength back a body made from multiple pieces of wood adding a back also would probably make the body stronger than a single slab of wood, basic engineering init.
Tight bond glue is stronger than wood! If you were to bend a three part body glued together with tight bond, it wouldn't be the glued bits that fail first...
13. Pete - we all know that there are bigger custom shop disasters out there - like a certain John English that's had industrial glue tipped over it and has been routed for humbuckers for starters...
14. It's funny that on a Fender, using different woods on the body is considered ugly yet on a Dingwall Prima Artist it's a selling feature (albeit mostly hidden by the top and back facings) http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Prima_A_6_files/PABack.jpg I'm not a big fan of the racing strip look although having said that, I thought the green alleva with the stripe looked great. Just goes to show. The 3 part body is obviously some gimmick surrounded in tone wood mystique - maybe the two wings are from lighter piece of woods to save the thing becoming an anchor. (In early fender days I guess it would be called not wasting material). Either way it's clearly visible and that may or may not be a good thing depending upon the buyer. I'd be more upset if I was buying this in solid black to find out that lay underneath... But then again, if the bass played and sound wicked I probably wouldn't care. I fail to be excited by Fenders I guess... But hey, that's just me. And this is coming from somebody who thinks the j bass is probably one of, if not the best bass design out there. So in short, if somebody likes it and is prepared to pay the price, it'll sell... I guess.
15.
We had a good look at EBS at MusikMesse last year as a possible brand to start stocking in the shop and they just didn't seem as good build quality as we remembered. Difficult to put a finger on exactly what the difference was but this, combined with the fact that they were really pushing all the smaller units and combos put us off
I think their focus has shifted from being the best a product can be to shifting boxes for max profit. I'm guessing the boxes with the most profit are now the ones containing the classic range and the Reidmar. I hated it when they dropped the chrome off the heads. It was marketed as a "save the environment" thing - but I suspect it was down to the fact that matte black powder coating is so much cheaper. Scratches that much easier also. If you compare the earlier range to the modern day, there is penny pitching everywhere - right down to the recessed dish on the back of the speaker with the jacks and crossover. Most disapppointing. I don't think the UK is EBS' market anymore. When you consider their best selling unit was the classic 450 in Europe, I can't actually recall seeing an abundance of those anyway in the UK. The Reidmar is a great amp with the sound of the 350. Still reckon they dropped the ball on that one too - for the market they are pitching it against, it hasn't got that oh so desirable size that enables you to put it in a gig bag and although it is a seriously loud amp, for those that measure volume in watts, it's just not as attractive on paper as the offerings from genz (at the time), mark bass or tc (even though their watts are a sham anyway - at least EBS have always had true specs published on that front). Shame. Especially as I am an EBS fan. Obvious. Just more of a fan of the earlier stuff I guess.
16. I agree - I think the focus on getting a foothold in the European rock and metal market meant that these amps got tweaked appropriately. As big as fan as I am of EBS, I am disappointed that you can see them beginning to pinch to the pennies - e.g. Compare earlier era carpet covering to those on the modern cabs to those on the current models. Also the hardware has been switched out for cheaper Chinese equivalents. :-/ And don't get me started on the pedals.
17. 350>360 650>660 350>650 Holy grail is the 350+... (350 with a 650 output stage in a 350 case). EBS claim nothing has claimed... but all us EBS users can't be wrong.
18. They might fall off soon. Shouldn't be an issue then.
19. The Neotech is a good strap - I used one for a few years. Had to have it modified by the local seamstress to shorten it because it was too long for me... but I don't think you'll be disappointed. Very comfortable.
20. Ps feel free to drop me a pm
21. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/205633-in-ear-monitors-help-needed/ If you haven't already, read through the above post. It may give you all the answers you are looking for!
22. The answer is not enough. They don't have filters - assume that the only stuff you'll able to hear is what is fed into your inears. Even with open vocal Mics, you'll need individual mixes to hear properly.
23.
...mind you, Ashdown ARE crap.
No they're not! They are great at starting fires!
