1. Lighter fluid. It'll clean that stuff right off and is safe for the wood as it evaporates quickly.
2. In fact - check this http://basschat.co.uk/topic/49897-how-to-shim-a-neck/
3. Have you taken the neck off? There may be a shim in there - it sounds like ultimately to get the action where you want, you may need to shim anyway. Have a look at the sticky which I think is at the top of this section.
4. When I played in an originals acoustic outfit, I turned up to a few venues with just a DI box. Makes life so much easier!
5. Anyway. Go to the gb guitars website and pick any of say, Stuart Clayton's demos and tell me straight that they lack zing.
6. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.... Ha
7. Not really - I spoke to him about it in detail. The problem is, he hasn't got his setup industrialised enough to push out the number of basses to satisfy what the demand would have been. He still gets people now who order because Mark played one though.
8.
Mark ended up switching to GB basses quite quickly. I think he was going through a bad time then, as the GB basses sounded absolutely shocking as well. The first Level 42 record/DVD I got was the Ohne Filter show. Dear me, his bass sounded f***ing crap there. Flat as f*** tonally. Even the red bass he got out for Mr Pink sounded hopeless. He ended up going back to Status; a smart move as Level 42 took off again soon after and he had left those dire basses buried in the sands of time.
The GB basses were introduced to Mark via Boon who is a personal friend of Bernie's. Tonally, it's all subjective - to me, Mark had the best sound he has ever had through the GBs. Remember, he was going through Crashdown back then - more than a hurdle to overcome! I believe Mark was actually a big fan of the GBs up to the point where Bernie took them back - Mark even said to Bernie, in front of me at the LBGS, "Maybe if you hadn't sold my favourite blue bass we'd still be in f*king business!"
9.
They vary a lot in weight - I have two J's and both are pretty 'standard' Fender J weight
I thought so too. All the Alleva J's have tried I thought were comparable to any other J in terms of weight. They didn't strike me as heavy. As for the Fender, I'm still not sold on that B. It just seems overly floppy... which is a shame, cos I'd quite like a trad Fender J (albeit 5 string).
10. Animals. *sigh* Hope you and Alex gets stuff sorted quickly.
11. Aw come on, for approx 700, you want one of these bad boys - (Gretsch G5422TDCG)
12. Kemper profiling amp - any good for bass? I really like the idea - just haven't tried it out in practice. My primary band are all pretty much sold on in-ears and most of us now use them, the idea of carrying around a small powered cab with a Kemper really appeals, especially if it's super lightweight compared to my TD650 (shall have to check the specs). I must admit, I do like a silent stage, although I am not sure I would want to give up my valve amp if I was a guitarist. The first band I saw who completely went silent stage was Wheatus - and to be fair, they sounded excellent.
13.
Best P bass I've ever played was an Alleva Copollo KPB. The 5's are pretty rare and there's a long wait for a new one - of course, one reason is because Jimmy can sell every one he can make!
If the P is comparable to their J basses, I can well believe it!
14.
You can get a set of pickups and pre-amp provided that you are also prepared to pay for the Wal bass they are attached to. Prices start at £3650. Which is how it should be. They are the USP of a Wal so why dilute the brand value by selling them separately.
Agree.
15. Here, have a million quid for a pair of pickups and a preamp. I think they would. I just think the "for how much?" is the factor.
16. Nice solution. Here's another all in one wired solution. http://www.thomann.de/gb/fischer_amps_inear_monitor_bp.htm
17. To anybody reading this thread, using IEMs off an aux without a limiter is a pretty daft thing to do. First bit of feedback or peak and that could be your hearing damaged for life. The OP doesn't say what he's using but I'm hoping he's using a proper IEM pack with a limiter built in... better is using an IEM system with a proper dedicated brickwall limiter in your IEM signal chain.
18.
perhaps some form of level adjustment (smack across the head) might be preferable?
nail, quite literally, on the head.
19. Ah the Adam and Eve... I remember playing there. The pool of blood in the doorway did fill me with a little concern. Great venue though... still pop in there now and again for a game of pool on the backroom table.
20. In which case, tell the keyboard to pay attention to what he's meant to be doing! The easiest way of doing this is to plug the headphones straight into the desk. The headphone feed will give you the mix going to FOH. Obviously, this isn't ideal, but you could use the rec outputs to give you the line levels that you really want.
21.
I had a Chris Eccleshall bass made which had the pickups/preamp and bridge supplied by Pete. The sound is down to the pickup and pre-amp combination the rest of the instrument is fairly standard in construction and materials. Pete showed me all the parts in the pickup when I was down picking up my 4 string. He also had a six string with a passive version of the pre-amp which sounded really good but I don't know if that was ever taken anywhere.
There you go. Posted at pretty much the same time - and I'll add that's why ACG sound like ACG!
