1. Quite surprised by that... mind you, given the amount of effects he uses, it doesn't really make a difference what he goes through.
2. Out of that list... for me, the EAD, the finish on that should keep the cab looking good for many years. Just make sure you keep the protective slip on it to prevent the grill getting scratched up. The Genz 212 mentioned is great, the EBS 2x12 is great if you like your top end response (but remember it can be tamed by a tweeter) and you should defo look at the offerings from Berg and Vanderkley. At this level, there is no wrong choice, it's just preference. What amp are you using? PS a lot of the cabs you mention have a similar footprint to a 4x10... The Genz is probably the wiser choice if you want the benefits of getting the drivers closer to your ear whilst taking up a smaller footprint... oh and it sounds great.
3. The pickup may be actually too close to the B string and the magnetic field could be influencing the vibration of the string and causing all sorts of funky overtones? Eitherway, we could do with some better descriptions...!
4. It's always better if somebody owns the PA outright to avoid any complexities at the band split. The way one of my bands has financed the PA is that one person has bought it and charges a nominal PA hire fee of £50 per gig (which is used to pay off PA). The one guy ends up with the PA as an asset - but that worked for the rest of the band.
5. Chin up dude... I'll be your driver for the geek meet and we'll make sure your new gear gets a good testing. PS - the pricetag has put me off that Grinnall...
6. It is - even his new Warwick (ugh, Larry shouldn't play Warwicks) has the XLR attachment for the signature gooseneck mic.
7. Aha - I recognise you from "Friends of the Bride". Yeah, can vouch for Thomann's stuff. Excellent quality despite it's budget pricetag.
8. I remember when Bernie made this bass. Love this bass - plays amazing. Ex show bass I seem to recall.
9. Also depends upon how high you have your action. You may not notice neck movement with a high action but you certainly will if you play with a fag paper action.
10. A hazer can still trigger an alarm but that requires a lot more effort than with your standard smoke machine. When buying a smoke machine, don't just go for the cheapest though - you may want to investigate ones with timers to ensure a constant stream of smoke, or possibly in the future, you may want something controllable by DMX. Also look at how much smoke they generate - for example, small smoke machines can take up to a minute or so to provide good coverage. Other monster machines can achieve the same in a few seconds.
11. Oh dear. Musicman owners are fckued then.
12. Depends on the venue. You may want to look at hazers though - they are more fire alarm friendly. Talk to the gaffer before hand to avoid any sticky situations... you just have to accept, as awesome as it makes the lights look, you won't be able to at every gig.
13.
I'm fairly certain it's the sm57 LC but I'll confirm when I'm back in the studio tonight.
Fairly certain... or fairly Shure? You do realise that the "LC" has nothing to do with the mic... the LC refers to the package that Shure sold - in this case, a SM57 without a cable.
14.
That might have almost been funny if you spelt it 'Shure'
Shure would have been.
15. Err... The beta is the more expensive version. You're not really sure what you are selling are you?
16. To go along with what Bill is saying, I must admit that with the right cabs, you can get yourself a versatile setup. I have 4 2x10 cabs. I take to the gig as many as I need.
17. Depends on what you are looking at. For example, 2x EBS 1x12s does not equal the EBS 2x12. One is a killer cab and the other cab as a pair falls short of the mark.
18. Thats a real loss for the bass playing community
19.
When you say that you want to change the sound of the bass, how fundamentally do you want to change it? I suppose that different people have a different idea of what is the defining characteristic if the Stingray tone , but for me it is that springy, zingy upper -mid / lower treble coupled with a very noticable scoop in some of the low mids. Add in the big bottom and slicing treble available and you've got the sound of a Stingray. Musicman Stingrays have got a very peculiar frequency response ; that's why they sound a bit wierd compared to most other basses . Adding an East preamp ( be my guest) may offer some extra tone shaping options or a slightly different flavour to the sound, but my bet is that it will still leave your bass sounding like a Stingray. If you want your bass to sound like another type of bass i.e a Fender or Warwick or a Ken Smith then I fear that you will be dissappointed.
This. Once a Stingray. Always a Stingray. You can dress it up with off the shelf electronics but the pickup type, position and construction means it's always going to be fundamentally Stingray. If you don't like that sound, then the Stingray is not for you. Modding is an option, like stated above - like putting in a P bass... but then you are in dodgy ground - butchering an instrument... and then it may not even give you what you want!
20. Cheers Nige. I know everybody does Superstition... but it's one of those party/wedding band prerequisites isn't it? The male singer has other projects (like us all really 'cept his are with people like Steve Winwood ) but this band is certainly a bit different from his others... such as... 22. What? That's odd. Glad you got it sorted anyway!
23. I had a quick look at the manual and it sounds like you are doing things right... :/
24. I find this really bizarre. Out of all the years of the professional gigs that I have been to, I never ever seen anybody use any sort of Auralex contraption... I'm not saying that the physics doesn't sing true, I'm just not sure how much of an impact in the real world that all this has.
