1. I don't know... looks good, if you wanted to get it A1, you could treat it to a coloured finish - depends if you wanted to keep the wood look. You asked about the look when the oil is being applied - you'd get that with a thin polyester clear top coat.
2.
Somebody earlier mentioned knowing more about a few products they were interested in than the sales guy, but as a former sales guy I should probably add a bit of balance I s'pose, I used to get this a lot, folks that had researched the ass off a few things and knew them to to the nth degree, they would then get all snarky cause they knew those three things better than me, thinking they were a huge expert and I was a mere pleb before them; of course what they forgot was that I had to also know a huge range of info about every. Other. Single. Thing. In. The. Shop!! However that was hi-fi and I would rather chew my own face off than deal with hi-fi customers ever again. -literally. But yes, I lament the death of the high street music store, but every single time I've given a local one a chance it's ended up a poor experience. Back to thomann
OK - I understand that the product range is potentially huge... but what is annoying for me is that in the down time, these are the people that are pissing around, doing jack sh*t when they could be having a play with the gear getting to know the ins and outs of the stuff. In my experience, they know jack about most, if not all of the stuff they are selling. There aren't many other jobs where people can do nothing but become reactive only when a customer walks into a shop. But above all, the thing that pisses me off the most, is when people are blagging in front of you and then telling me bullshit info about what a product can and can't do when I know full well what the score is. A simple, "I don't know" or "Shall we look into it" would be so much better. The best salesman I know, always carries around a guitar with him and has spent time researching the heck out of the products his shop sells... and that is why he can get sales out of people who only came into the shop for a browse. He can make all those products sing and he know how to navigate around them perfectly - so much impressive than somebody fumbling. I can fumble for myself.
3. I love my note. I don't actually see it as that big a phone as most other people do. As soon as they see how you can make use of the bigger screen (surfing the net for example - I use the Daily Mail webpage as an example - it all fits on the screen and you can still read it all), they get it. Fits in my jeans pocket fine and does everything I want it to do... and so much more! PS - I use 3g watchdog for my data watching app although ICS (you may have to upgrade as I don't believe the Note ships with the latest OS) for the Note now comes with an app to do this built in.
4.
+1 It offends my sense of chronological order. The 51-type Precision headstock had been replaced by the 57-type 'Strat' style by 59/60 when the first Jazzes appeared. Yes, I know it's not a Fender, etc but it just looks wrong doesn't it? Eh? Eh?
Yup.
5. Is that a white polyestered neck a la Larry Graham? I kinda like the bass bar the headstock
6. Music shops just annoy me. It's as though the people that they employ don't have any idea what they are selling, any idea about the brands that they are not selling (e.g. the competition) and their lazy attitude towards selling would mean that if they worked for me, they would be out of the door. It's not just music shops. I have been round a lot of car main dealerships of late and they are exactly the same. I knew more about those cars from what I had read online and from the sales brochures than ANY of the salesmen/women. At that point, I hadn't seen any of the cars I was looking at in the flesh but knew more about each of the models than the people that are paid to know and sell this stuff. Not acceptable. I had great pleasure in Mercedes having phone me up for a survey... I don't think they are used to people slating them on their sales techniques.
7.
Probably but to be honest I am not particularly bothered as long as it's loud and rumbly.
And that is why your earlier comment holds no water.
8. I think you are being harsh. It's just a typo. headless bass guitar, with full rewire, needs complete respray. graphite neck,eq controls for bass, treble, volume, new jack socket fitted.
9. [sub]From what I've read, this is ridiculous. Is the band full of people that have a day job and play musicians at weekend, or are they going to treat it as a pro band? If it's the latter, the ONLY way it can work is to have deps. People will never be able to make all the gigs hence that will lead to revenue loss for other members of the band. Understandably, these people will be pretty peeved if they lose money through lack of personel availability... hence the reason we dep. I play with different people all the time and actually enjoy it as it's great meeting new players on the gig. If the players are good enough, they'll be able to drop in no problem. When you say, play as per the record, any pro will do so... and hence they can just drop in. This is of course different if you are going to start introducing your own twists, melodies etc on songs - but generally, you can drop in deps and get the job done well with minimal, if any, rehearsing.[/sub]
10.
Who is the bass player with Sam Sparro on his European Tour ? He uses Jazz basses. Saw him last night at the Manchester Deaf Institute, superb.
http://www.davewilderbass.com/
11. ...should add... If you like them though, you should go for it. Afterall, we are all different and like different things.
12.
I've not got one but played a fair few at Bass Direct, they definitely don't take too much to get used to but for me they are a solution to a problem I've never experienced and the cost of a Dingwall id want (above a Combustion) is currently beyond my means.
I have to agree. A solution to a problem that doesnt exist.... backed up by a marketing pack of physics mumbo jumbo. Its just like the hifi world...
13. That looks to be a beaut. Nice.
14. Here you go... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=oRdxUFDoQe0#t=190s
15. Indeed. Great pedal... but ultimately let down by it's user interface experience.
16.
I've also got to give mad props to Alan at ACG, Paul at Wal and Bernie at GB - they all make astonishingly good instruments and you won't go too far wrong with any of them.
I'm a GB guy... I love the playability and electronics in them. To add though, as said, Sei, ACG, Wal... all great builders. You just need to find what suits you and what your budget is.
17.
It's like nailing jelly to a wall.
What flavour...?
18.
I would always go for two separate boxes over one large.
I would always go for 4 smaller boxes over one large.
19. [sup]Its for a backup/travelling via dodgy airlines bass - but what I have done to it, depends upon cost.[/sup]
20. ...and despite choosing woods for a specific tone, any luthier worth their salt will tell you that you'll never know how an instrument is going to sound until it's strung up and played.
21. In that case, now we're talking. Have you got a latest pricelist?
22. Just noticed you are in Isle of Wight - are you mr guitarfix.co.uk? (or what was as the site doesn't seem to be working for me now?)
23. Installing LEDs when making a guitar is easy. What about retrofitting them? Retrofitting is actually a more sensible option because if an LED should fail, just try and remedy that with easy. With a retrofit, the LED comes out using the technique it went in with. If you cut a route before attaching the fingerboard into a channel, you try and fix that without major headaches. At the moment, you are talking theory. The brass tubing and fibre optic is industry standard - got any examples of your work?
