1. Clutterbuck seemed to spend the day going through a MarkBass combo. Are you the only person in the UK to have a Kampera rig? I can't imagine any have sold at the rrp.
2. http://www.musiclandcentral.com/m70.html No problems here. Ordered a couple of Levy's straps from here. Arrived in about 10 days from the States.
3. Some guys ask for the original style pickups.
4. New 6 string Rumour for your enjoyment. Check out the snakewood tuners... pretty tasty... and I have to say, nobody does matching backplates as good as Bernie.
5.
Don't know if it's mentioned already, but there's an old trick of mine, which works everytime I have to transcribe basspart - just hook the whole tune up an octave (it will remain in the same key, get the idea? "Transcribe" has this function, but you can do that with other programs, setting +12 semitones), and bass will be in your face - no boominess, just clear bassline. It saves time, and it's better for your ears to listen to this 'midrange' stuff, rather than boomy mushy low-end thing.. Laimis
Yes, that's one of my tricks already. One of the issues I am having is that I seem to be transcribing stuff off somewhat vintage recordings also - which means a lot of pop, crackle and hiss to further obscure the detail! I fear that my current Fostex cans aren't delivering as well as some other cans could. I know AKG products - good stuff, have a couple of their mics. Thanks for your recommendations though - they are certainly worth a look. I don't know... maybe I've just M(onitor)AS.
6.
A few quick tips that work for me: - Use headphones instead of monitors. Helps me to concentrate on the bassline for some reason, probably because it negates any background noise/distractions. Closed back headphones would be ideal, but the ones I use are open and work just fine for this purpose. You should be able to pick up a good quality pair of 'cans' for around £100-£150 (or less). Not as versatile as a pair of monitors, perhaps, but a lot cheaper! - If you have access to DAW software, trying playing with the EQ (or using filters/gates) to better isolate the bassline from the rest of the mix. I notice you're already using Audacity, so you may be doing this anyway... I personally use Reason/Record for this purpose as it has a fantastic EQ built-in, but another popular choice in terms of DAWs would be Reaper, which gives you access to 3rd part VSTs, many of which can be found online for free. You can pick up a licensed copy of Reaper for around £50. - A cheap (and portable) alternative that I'm increasingly using myself is this little iPhone/iPod app: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/robick/id417016186?mt=8 Hope that helps.
Thanks for the pointers so far. Headphones are an option - but again, what to buy? I know the industry standard were the DT100s - I don't know if this is still the case and whether or not they are the best in terms of hearing the bass before tweaking the eq. I have got Cubase on my my PC but I do a lot of transcribing at the piano, hence I just put the laptop on the piano and maybe run some headphones from there or have some monitors I can put on top of the piano. I find transcribing at the piano with a bass on my lap useful as I can get the chord structure sorted quickly and confirm inversions and stuff as my ear isn't always that good. My computer speakers aren't that good - I should have been looking for a monitoring solution before now... but I do so little recording at home and anything I have done, I literally capture through my M-Audio 1010, download the Wav and go somewhere decent to mix.
7. I am finding myself doing more and more transcribing work and just wondered what you guys are using to hear your music that you are transcribing. At the moment, I have an average set of headphones/portable CD player/laptop with transcribe!/audacity etc and am looking to get a good working solution so I can hear a defined bass line clearly to help my hearing for transcribing. Whilst I would love a good pricey set of monitors and amp, I am looking for a decent cheap (probs less that £200) solution, probably favouring an amp+speaker/powered monitor setup. Note - I'm probably going to be using my laptop as the audio source and will want the monitors to go quite loud. What are you guys using and what would you recommend?
8.
Hiya Mate, Have u still got this rig?
Reply to thread fail.
9.
Peterson VS-R Stroborack tuner. Comes with original box and paperwork. Mild rack-rash. £200 + shipping.
Best affordable rack tuner bar none.
10. Rescue Blues is a lovely song. In fact, everybody should have Ryan's first two solo albums (Heartbreaker and Gold). Songwriting class as good as any other artist out there. Don't quite know what happened then...
11.
Tinie Tempah bass dude is called Rick James - monster player from London, he's got a Streamer 6 string, he was in BGM recently and plays around town a bit in various bands - he's endorsed by Mark Bass - good to see a guy like him doing the big stages, he's a killing jazz funk player.
Oh yeah big time. I used to see him regularly with Pete Ray Biggin when they played up in Birmingham before they broke big time on to the London session scene. I think the first time I recall Rick getting expose was in Daniel Beddingfields video for "I can't read you". Not that it really shows his skills off, if you can get to see him let him rip, it's certainly an education, especially with Pete.
12.
Hmmmmmmmm...
Cool in the right situation. Its all about the right time and place...
13. Satin loveliness! Rumour 5, walnut, maple, purpleheart... nice.
14.
1-Show me a player that never looks at the neck of their instrument.
1. Jeff Healey. On two counts. One because he couldn't. Two, cos he's dead.
15. Props to Cee Lo for holding his sh*t together. I love the way he keeps looking left - he knows what's going in over there just ain't right. And jeez, that guitar sound and that sorry excuse for a Neal Schon impersonation...
16. Just one to throw in here, I like some SCs, hate others... but I'm yet to find a 4 string SC that works for me. Is anybody with me thinking that SCs look better the more strings they have - e.g. 5, 6, 7...? I'm with urb though, the Seis are a bit weird like that... you may not like them to look at in pictures, but in the flesh and certainly playing them, they certainly work. Its like anything, a bass has it's place. Turn up for a motown gig with your SC, it'll probably be the last time you are asked. Give Mark King a P bass, he'll probably be a little lost and will be looking for something a little more hifi.
17. Watch, listen and learn. PS, sit through it, it gets "better".
18. Tis looking good. Doesn't look like it should be that long away now!
19. HI GUYS! REMEMBER ME?!?
20.
You know we will be there dude! Lets face it
Seriously, didn't enjoy last year.
21. Contemplating not going this year cos of the slappage. Depends upon the line up to be honest.
22.
I haven't heard a Blade but I thought they had "hot" pickups. Do you run the Modulus at the same volume? Now you've got a better bass I think you need a better rig to let your bass shine through.
Not got any experience of a blade, but hot pickups usually boosted mids, which is what usually cuts through a mix the most. Try boosting the mids on the amp when using the Modulus. If not, go with the above, you probably need to look at improving your bass rig so you can push the tone you want through at volume, rather than compensate for lack of volume by changing your tone.
23.
I'd contact the Bass Centre - they'll have some info.
There you go. They are made by GHS for the Bass Centre.
24.
Thats just amazing and at that price it needs to come into the Basschat community surely? I think thats way under priced if it plays as good as it looks. V&R could ask £2500+ IMO for that when has another 76' in original condition last been available in the UK never mind as good as that! Serious GAS going on right now.
Been talking to Pete about this. I'm not sure that this is a 76... I would wager this bass is B004444, which would make it a refin, and a 77. The (one number short - I'm guessing the * in the add dictates a number) serial number would suggest it's certainly a 77. 1976, all original? Depends if you call that colour burgundy or not and you believe the serial number makes it a 76...
