Bass newbies what basic equipment is a must have?
funkgod replied to Gomez68's topic in General Discussion
Hello and again welcome, I was just thinking amp speaker wise for you, im guessing funds wise while you are finding your feet you need to be carefull, so ok, i think a great little combo for cheap money that i think most would agree as.. a work horse, reliable, tank built, moveable, is cheap ( see below) plenty around to choose from loud enough for small gigs without being di'd get good enough tones from slap to warm blues built in x over in case you want to broaden out the sound a patch loop for effects... (so you can set your tone from your bass via the eq on the amp before you send it to the effects, rather than have the effects in line (on the floor) before the eq on the amp so the eq then is messing with the effect sound as well !) has cct/overload protection so you wont (unless you try hard) blow the speaker which i think is why there is still alot around today is the good old underated peavey TNT bass combo. a preff for me would be too make sure it has a black widdow speaker in it, some do, some dont ( a badge at the bottom of the grill will tell you if it came from the factory with one or not. keep your eyes on local ebay gumtree etc, and hay when you want to upgrade sell it for what you got it for !! win win I think this will serve you well for a while, Good luck and enjoy the ride Info,,,, http://assets.peavey.com/literature/manuals/80370367.pdf some for sale http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR2.TRC1.A0.H0.Xpeavey+tnt&_nkw=peavey+tnt&_sacat=0 seen them sold as cheap as £43 !!! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peavey-TNT-130-bass-combo-/191384785306?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2c8f6c119a -
agreed but then Ranscombe have purposely stayed analogue - im sure there are plenty of vst plugins to simulate all manner of old school analogue rack mount studio effects but then you wouldnt be able to have fun like this
What a cool looking place looks like its not been touched since the 70s. i have the same recorder just finished replacing all the micro switches on the front and made a new pich roller for it, they are so well made i love it, great to see they are still being used, cheers
24 tracks across 1" of tape. Thats a narrow track width and not much better than compact cassette!
so imagine the Msr16 which is 16 tracks aross 1/2 tape ( thats like 32 tracks over the same 1" tape) but it still sounds good Voltage studios in bradford still use one.... http://www.voltagestudios.com/studio.html
Absolutely 456 is crap
Agreed, of the 456 tapes i have transferred to digi most of them are shedding to some degree. the worst ones i think seem to be the Ampex from the early/mid 90s as the worst ones were in the boxes that had the blue print on the front, see pic... the first box left early 80s mine are ok abit hissy, box in the middle is 93, and the end right is 96 of the ones i have done and have it seems to be more around the 93 boxes that were bad i have non past 96 so cant say up untill quantegy took over, the earlyst quantegy 499 i have is from 2003 which is perfect. if you look on the side of the box there is a date tag with something like 93167 the first two is the year, but...... unless you know where the tape is from its a guess on the tape inside as being original to the box. i have always kept my old tapes well, in a dry place and i put a little bag of silicone in the middle (the type you get in shoe boxes) to soak up any damp, if any, which i think has saved some of my ampex. just in case anyone is using 1" tape, while looking for more zonal i found a chap on ebay that sells 1" zonal 675 on a 10" reel in a box posted and delivered next day (uk) all in for £18 ! ! yep £18. i have had 4 and they are perfect. used once and wiped, the ones i have had were used for book narration back up so not continuous used areas, for £18 its worth a try, even just to use to get ideas down. on the quality of these i am looking at a deal on 10. some info from cranford... Zonal 675 "Matt backed standard play, exceptionally low print. Low modulation noise, wide dynamic range, hardwearing surface. Designed for music mastering, broadcast, and archival applications. 2500 feet on 10.5 inch NAB hub, 1200 feet on 7 inch spool and 600 feet on 5 inch spools. Equivalent to the former Ampex 478."
Many years ago I used to work for BBC Sound in the transfer and dubbing areas... We had Albrecht 16/35mm mag film bays, Otari and Studer 24track 2" machines, Nagra T and 4S 1/4" machines plus a host of video stuff. My personal record for sync was 19 Albrechts playing 16mm tracks onto the Otari, with 6 of those tracks also going to Nagra Ts, plus an Albrecht with film head playing pictures and 2 mixes from the 16mm mag tracks onto D3 and BetaSP video machines, and those pictures and main mix going onto a bank of 10 VHS machines. Took me 1.5 hours to set up - serious plugging job - but was a fine sight with all those machines playing and recording in perfect sync!
sounds like wiring hell, esp with a bloke breathing down your neck wanting it done in 30 mins here is a nostalgic trip for you.
(other than writing them all down on charts - including all the effects routings). ....... otherwise IMO you lose the whole point of using tape in the first place, as it's poor quality A/D conversion that lets down digital recording, not the fact that it's digital.
ah yes .. "writing them all down on charts - including all the effects routings" i still do that as much as i can, the habit now has crossed over even when using my digi ! as i am sending tracks as stem files to a friend in scotland who does the key parts that are beyond me. good house keeping i feel. i dont know how many times in the past i have made a great sound up using a novation ks rack and put it through various filters like the electricx filter factory or the tc fireworx and never wrote the settings down or stored it, it would take all week getting it back from scratch. never heard of the RME before, just had a quick look, looks intresting, http://www.rme-audio.de/en_index.php "poor quality A/D conversion that lets down digital recording, not the fact that it's digital" 100% agree. and then added into the mix poor quality recorded takes and using bad sounding gear the whole sh!t in sh!t out becomes very real DiceSociety.. a 1/4" 4 track was my first two recorders a phillips and an akai 4000d , and i still have the tapes, had great fun with them and some surprisingly ok takes, what is good about the old tapes is, it shows you ideas at that time, i found an old 3 part bass solo from must be 30 years ago, looking at it now.... i still like it.. and to me shows how much i learnt in such a short time.
Funny that what with all the advances in recording technology, you can get software to model recordings made on tape machines.
yes you can, i suppose it was inevitable that was going to happen, some studios still use tape but charge a premium to use it, just the price of new tape to do this on now is expensive plus the process of them setting up and maintaining, and there are not many companies still making multitrack tape, RMG are still producing good tape. I do feel tho that tape has its place and some things sound good on it, so i want to try and sync both digi and tape together, I dont think a machine is being made now, maybe someone like behringer will knock one up in the future..... "I used to work with a 16 track reel to reel sync'd to cubase with SMPTE!" yes i can sync it that way but as you know you have to use the transport buttons on the tape as master control over cubase, you cant control the tape from the daw ( play, ff, rw, stop, rec, ect) as the tapes striped track 16 has no control over its own transport only as a smpte pulse output to cubase, at first i was striping track 16 using tascams MTS 30 midi to tape synchronizer then found out that this was not SMPTE but stripes the track with FSK so yes i can see where your nightmare begins. some tape sync info here if anyone is intrested... http://tweakheadz.co...-mmc-mtc-smpte/ Dad3353.. "Ampex, unusable now, as too brittle" some of my old ampex has not gone brittle but more ...soft, and is starting to shed, so when playing its coming off on the transport its more sticky and puts a load on the motors as ff play and rw slows right down as the motors try and drag the almost sticky tape. i think this is a big problem with not just ampex, so i offer a service to transfer old 1/2" 16 track and 1" 24 track tape to digi stem files, from the ones i have done Ampex is by far the worst, funny enough all of my 1" zonal 675 tape is perfect, ! There is an intresting comparison here on tape v digi and where to use tape today, http://recordinghacks.com/2013/01/26/analog-tape-vs-digital/

old tannoy reveal are ok but are limited with out controls, here is an older shoot out so any of these should be cheepish now. the behringers did well. http://www.digitalpr...or_shootout.htm i have the tannoys and the roland and can say the roland DS90 are very good loads of in/out options and eq, i never liked powered monitors without a vol control. i am biased toward the ds90s, so i am going to say i dont think the reviewer knew too much about them as there is so much more to them... http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun00/articles/rolandds90.htm but looking at the shootout the behringers must be worth a listen as they are cheep enough on ebay used at the mo

Analog recording. im Just wondering if anyone still uses tape to record ? im still using tascam 16 and 24 track reel to reels and while i love the sound of my mackie hdr24 digi recorder, i still love recording on to tape. i find if i get an idea and want it down fast its to the tape i go first... 1 button on, plug in the bass and drum machine. press record and i am all ready to go, its that quick, for me to do the same on the digi the whole set up seems to take ages, once i have all the ideas and parts down i then take the idea to the digi. so while im on this has anyone sync'd two recorders together or sync'd a reel to reel to the daw so as to use the daw to control the reel to reel ? i know how to do this the other way, to control the daw from the reel to reel using a smpte striped track. but i want to control it the other way, so now im up to the stage of looking for a tascam midiizer mts1000, and so to my question ...has anyone found another way to do this ?

my fave was.... "drummer wanted, must be able to drum, time wasters will be flogged with a wet fish"

I have been reading this with intrest, sometimes when reading a thread you have to stop yourself from commenting... but this makes me boil enough to comment... Here are my thoughts NEVER PAY TO PLAY... its devaluing live music, and music as a whole All pay to play venues should be boycotted, i think they are taking the pi@@ out of us, and at the end of the night pat you on the back tell you to come back anytime ( but bring more people !) and cant wait to kick you out the door to see what thay have made, i know brewery owned pubs that support live music have a budget set aside for live music TO PAY THE BAND.. they dont even pay for advertising and want you to do that as well. So on a good sat night who gets paid ?? Bar staff .............paid glass collectors...paid manager...........paid doorman...........paid dj.....................paid people selling the beer to the pub... paid music licence...................... paid cleaners............................. paid But musicians who bring in the cash to pay for all this ?? Sod all cus you should be lucky we are letting you play, If you have a good following and can sell tickets you dont need them, you can reclame costs and self promote your band, club together and hire the local town hall or local venue, if you have faith in your band its worth a shot at least once, As all musicians know for an original band product is king, but while trying to get your songs out there if you are a pro musician ( or thinking of becoming one) playing live is an important part of your income i think we should Spread the word, "never pay to play"

tip of the day..... Never take a laxative and sleeping pill at the same time. DRILL a one inch diameter hole in your refrigerator door.... This will allow you to check that the light goes off when the door is closed

Buggers, you need to sack him, and get this guy in, he would only take a second to set up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_kloG2Z7tU

Gray area indeed i do PA hire and hire out a ful Hk rig, 32chan desk with rack gizmos, 5 way powered monitoring, all quality mics, stands, multicore, lights, all set up before the band arrive, and when they bugger off as soon as they finish, im left til the dj has packed away and last out. now i also play in a band that expect the same pa and standards, All i ask for the band i am in, is that the pa takes a members cut, so a 5 piece band splits 6 ways, great for the guys they turn up plug and play finish and go. but then there is a sound man who turns up when i arrive does the sound and lights and leaves when i do , so he gets a cut so 7 ways. Now reality, If you did £ per hour and you do PA as well as play in the band, ! ! sh*t you could go and sell broken biscuits on a market stall for more, but thats playing in a band, just enjoy, you sign up, expect the worst, any extra is a good day.

fretless, as much as i love certain makes of bass, with a fretless i would just buy anything that sang in my hands, ( dont be biased toward a make.) big failings for me, or my first check, is the G string, make sure this is loud with nice swells so many fretless basses die badly round the C to D notes on the G string, some go into a more of a harmonic than a solid note also in this area, not so noticable on a fretted as the steel in the fret helps with sustain, but much more noticable on a fretless having the softer note made of wood and skin. i have a fair few fretless basses and the one i use for recording (if ever) is the cheapest of the lot !! worth checking

seems the norm for them, i have had 2 problems also. 1 i had a roland rack mixer collected by the winning bidder with them. and it was packed very well with polystyrene all round. when he got it they had managed to bend the plate on the front with the controls and bend 2 corners to almost 90 deg, which means they would of had to throw it at least twice ! 2 i had a new cast iron chimninea delivered by them and because of the first incident i asked to look at it before i signed,Driver said " he has no time he is on a tight schedule" ! ! and was arsey. i did look and sure enough it was cracked, he said "if i sign for it he will get it picked up" i said no just take it back now, if i had signed for it i would of been stuck with it, anway was refunded by the seller. the moral is always pay for things to be signed for and if receiving CHECK before you sign. if damaged do not let them leave without it. On saying all this i have had damaged good from other couriers as well, so its all a bit of a chance. i still maintain if buying a bass in the uk or something fragile over say £500 i always go and collect it. -
Keep heart mate, I went to college and started my career in Liverpool and then went to live in the busier Manchester scene. It wasn't long before too many trips down the M6 made it the right decision to up sticks (with family and mortgage in tow... 3 kids) today I've done day 1 of rehearsals on a show that may well transfer to the West end and complete a UK tour. All paying my mortgage
Thats great inspirational news to hear, well done, and good luck,
