2010 Fender Precision USA Standard - Olympic White
sPiKi replied to vango14's topic in Basses For Sale
I bought it last week. Changed the tort for black as I wanted a change from my oly/tort AS jazz. Gigged it for the first last Saturday through my Ampeg rig (V4BH + 6x10 cab) going through a Tech 21 VT pedal and it sounded huge! BTW its actually a 2008 according to number on headstock not 2010, although it may have been bought then. -

I have been using the 4B with 410 HLF for a about a year now but I am just not getting a great sound from it, particularly on the E string, no matter how I EQ it. I play a US Std Jazz which goes through a VT Bass pedal which I use as a pre-amp because I just can't get the power out the guitar & amp alone. The low notes tend to 'honk' a lot for want of a better description. Before this I had been using an Ampeg SVT200T which is a 350W solid state amp. Although it couldn't handle the volume without clipping I play at, I just preferred the tone. Having looked around a bit I really like the sound of the Bass Terror here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-rN4glWmTs. Any thoughts, suggestions or ideas - am I mad considering the change or how could I try to get a better sound? I haven't been able to try the BT out for myself since there are no Orange dealers here in NI but I know some forum members have a similar set up. Thanks in advance.
I wasn't overly impressed with the AG500SC that I owned. It was ok, but I went back to my trusty Ashdowns without a second thought (don't believe everything you hear about them!), although I'm considering moving one of my Ashdowns on for something more lightweight (Markbass LMII/III, Orange BT500 or Ibanez Promethean). Will always have one about though. I agree that Aggie make great cabs. My GS112 is a fantastic cab!
Bigwan - coukd you elaborate on why you weren;t ovely impressed with the amp. I've also been considering the Ampeg SVT 7Pro & the Orange Bass Terror. Ant thoughts/experience on those two?
I would have put Aguilar in the studio users market myself...but that would be a long time ago. They are a completely different company now. Go to their website and look at the artists page.. I use their cabs and I think they make some of the best around. I'll use them for everything but I am not a metal player by any means. If I guessed..I would say their niche is aimed at Ampeg, vintage type users from the comsmetic side of things but they do the soul/RnB element as well. Musicman20 will be along soon..he will deffo know, IMO.
- Lol - pretty new to these boards but I know what you mean! I do like Ampeg but just want something with more power than my current SVT200T. Good SS amp but just not giving me the poke I need playing live.
Hey, I am thinking along the same lines. I currently use an Ampeg SVT 2 Pro and an 8x10 but I need to sell up as I'm moving to London. I went to the gallery and am now torn between the Aguilar AG500sc and a Gallien Krueger 1001RB-II. I'm primarily into rock music but I intend to play a wide range of covers. Personally I preferred the Aguilar but I was worried about how it would cope/sound in a rock band. Glad to hear it works in that setting! If I ever need more dirt I do have a couple of Sansamps. Ed
I was going to use my VT pedal for any drive that I need & that's why I had opted against the dual channel Aggie. Been using my mate's Ampeg V4BH at the last couple of gigs with the VT & sounds great - unfortunately he's not selling! BTW, what is Aguilar's normal market? Is it not normally rock?

Thanks for the replies. Both are very encouraging. I love Justin Meldal-Johnson's sounds with NIN (if you have seen their recent live DVD you'll know what I mea).Unfortunately nowhere does them here in N Ireland but gonna ring a couple of dealers & see what they can do them for on appro basis.

Looking to replace my Ampeg SVT200T and have read great things about Ag gear. Was looking at the AG500SC to go with my Ampeg 410 HLF cab and Amer Std Jazz. Any basschatters have one of these & what do you think of it? I want something that gives me a big clean sound, rather than grit or dirt, for classic & modern rock stuff like KoL, Killers, Green Day etc. Thanks in advance.

Worth changing from Ampeg SVT200T to Orange Bass Terror - good idea?
sPiKi replied to sPiKi's topic in Amps and Cabs
The Bass Terror is damn loud. If you like your tone quite dirty its even louder because of the gain. I very much imagine it will sound huge through that cabinet.
Thanks for the feedback - just another question, what are Aguilar amps like? Been looking at the Ag500SC but can't find any sound clips & I don't know of any dealers here in N.Ireland who stock them. Thinking of selling my Stingray to fund the right amp. Great guitar but just prefer my Jazz when playing live. -
What cabinet are you using?
Ampeg 410HLF. -
Hi there I have been using the Ampeg SVT200T for some years now & it has proven to be a really reliable amp. However, recently it just doesn't seem to be delivering the volume I need. I am playing a Amer Std Jazz & SR4 HH through a Tech 21 VT & 410HLF. The tone I have is really really good but volume wise, just not satisfying me. I am gigging every week in a covers band, playing venues from 150-500 people. Band is full mic'd every night but I like to feel the bass behind me iykwim. I saw that review on YT of the Bass Terror & thought that tone was sweet. Anyway, would this be a good move? Price & size/weight is very attractive. Can't really afford to break the bank on this one. I have tried my mates V4BH for a couple of gigs & it did sound superior to my amp but just can't afford an all tube atm. So, any advice or recommendations or caution on the Bass Terror? I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance
Oh don't sell the 62! Too nice I've been playing my Fenders at home recently and decided these are definitely spot on, to the point where I don't need any more. I'm not even thinking vintage Fenders...happy with what I've got. Tis a great feeling. I've strayed back into EB, and the Big Al 5 is exactly the kind if bass I want next...eg unique, awesome tone, and EB quality.
Anyone tell me how these compare to a MM SR4 HH? I bought the latter in Dec09 a month after buying an Amer Std Jazz but I just haven't gelled with the SR at all. I just can't get a sound for live perf. that I'm happy with. I recently bought the Tech 21 VT Bass pedal and it makes the Jazz sound massive. Seriously thinking of selling the MM which I rarely play and getting one of these Deluxes. Any advice or opinions from those who have played both?
I don't consider a solid state Ampeg 'the real thing'. The VT Bass can help you get some of the tube sounds of the B15 and SVT valve amps - I say go for it!
I agree. My bro has an SVT classic and it sounds completely different. Managed to pick up the pedal yesterday on the bay for £75. Its used but mint. Will report back when I try it out next week.
perhaps an eq might be worth a try. the boss eq is quite easily found on the dreaded bay quite reasonably priced, if it doesn't do what you're after you should be able to recover your outlay. i hear the barber linden eq is great. perhaps someone with more experience of one might be able to help out here!
Thanks dude' (sorry ). The hunt for the elusive tone goes on. Might try both and see what's best.
it could be a good move. you really must try before you buy though. I really love my big rig (Marshall DBS with MB / Jubilee cabs), but it's a really useful standby for a recording or hired rig situation, it can really add something cool to your sound 'pallette'. Where are you based?
I'm based in N. Ireland. I have a good set up. Had the SVT since I bought it new back in 94-95 & it sounds great as a solid state amp. As a group we have our own PA (KV2 Audio), lighting rig etc etc. We only play one venue where we use the in-house PA so virtually every night, its like the circus coming to town! While I have a decent on stage sound, when using the Jazz, it just lacks a bit of depth. I have tried out an SVT classic which def has a different & more desirable sound & that's the reason for considering the VT pedal. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to identify a stockist locally to try it out.

I know there is almost universal praise for this pedal but just before I take the plunge and order one, I wanted to get some feedback from those of you who have one. I play in a covers band and we literally cover the A to Z of contemporary music, from Abba to ZZ Top. In essence we are most at home playing rock and play lots of stuff like AC/DC, Journey, Bon Jovi etc as well as more modern stuff like KOL, Killers etc. My set up currently is an American Std Jazz, MusicMan Stingray 4 HH, Ampeg SVT200T SS 350W head and Ampeg 410 HLF. I occasionally use a Boss CEB 3 Chorus and a Nathan East parametric EQ. I have a powerful sound from the 'Ray and a very good clean & compressed sound with the Jazz but find that I need a bit more oomph from it and a bit more power/grit/dig/drive call it what you will. Forgive my limited descriptive skills when it comes to tones etc but do you reckon the VT is the best purchase for me? Many thanks fellow bassmen

Dilemna - sell a SR4 HH for Fender American J or P deluxe - am I wise?
No - you is bonkers! Don't do it!! Put your location in your profile and a local basschatter might meet you for a set-up in exchange for a pint! - especially if you live near me
Cheers guys. Have decided to leave it into a guitar tech to set up properly for me & hopefully I will feel the love thereafter! -
I bought an American Std Jazz in November and was delighted with it - sounds great, looks great and plays great. Within a month though I had sold my other bass, a SR4 single pickup, having come across a brand new SR4 HH in a local music shop at a very reasonable price. So two excellent basses within a month of each other. Thought I was in bass heaven. However, ever since then I just can't get into playing the 'Ray. I just can't seem to get the sound I like out of it when I am out gigging (using an Ampeg SVT 200T SS amp and 410HLF) plus it just doesn't feel right like the Jazz does (some fret buzz, string tree is noisy, oiled neck isn't as enjoyable to play etc). I like the tonal range an active bass provides and therefore was thinking of selling it and buying an American J or P. What do you guys think? Am I crazy for looking to getting rid of it?
