  1. Are you sure JE didn’t write Magic bus and they changed the lyrics? I don't care how much I pay (Too much, Magic bass) I wanna play my bass to my baby each day (Too much, Magic bass)
  2. First and foremost, what do I need or how can I improve on my current stable. Currently a 5 string 34” in the shape of a Ken Smith BT5 would fit the bill!
  3. They apparently had parts lying around so guess they could have made the neck a few years earlier and stuck the decals on when they actually completed the bass.
  4. I use passive. Got a Fender P bass that always sat perfectly in the mix so no need for messing with EQ settings.
  5. Well I don’t think you would lose out much financially if you didn’t like it and sold it back on. You see them occasionally on eBay.
  6. Obviously a few bits not original but is suspect this is an awesome bass: https://thebassgallery.com/collections/bass-new-arrival/products/hybrid-p
  7. “Play it on bass”. And how do you do that….. by knowing the fretboard and scale patterns you accelerate that process. Also “just sing”. How do you arrive at the ideas without having heard them previously whether consciously or subconscious. You do not possess magical talent that derives the ideas from thin air, no one does. The OP asked specifically about what’s going on. I’ve never read anything to suggest James Jamerson sang his lines, but lots to say he constructed them from chord charts after years of playing jazz.
  8. Well you just need to know and understand; chord tones, passing tones, chromatic notes, modes, rhythm, phrasing, articulation, stylistic nuances, all the notes on the fingerboard and transcribe a whole load of melodies (not necessarily played on bass).
  9. Emotion in a note or phrase comes from articulation (short/ long/ hard/soft). So complexity and choice of notes don’t invoke emotion by themselves.
  10. Seen them quite a bit and they can be hit and miss but seeing them on TOTP got me into bass. Jay had said on social media he had recently finished recording so hopefully the tour will supplement a new album!
  11. What’s going on is a very melodic line - the arrangement allows it to drive the song.
  12. My last bass purchase from a physical shop was 2006! I joined bass chat in 2010 but before that I was buying off eBay instead of shops anyway.
  13. Hope it goes better for you this time and you get something out of this ordeal.
  14. I don’t mind jumbo frets, my P bass has them
  15. This will be news to me if it’s the case. I understood it to be the product code, otherwise there would be a lot of basses made on the 5th and 7th of the month but no other dates
  16. Funnily enough I saw the video they posted and thought I reckon that’s worth £6k! It’s a lovely looking and sounding instrument.
  17. Just basic learning theory. You learn from something existing, so by not learning what others have done you’re relying on something you’ve subconsciously heard, something you know already, theory or a mixture of all 3. The more you learn from others the more you absorb into your own arsenal of ideas.
  18. I think it’s more what’s commonly known as jazz theory that is beneficial to musicians. It clearly deconstructs and defines scales/ arpeggios, chromaticisms, chord structures, progressions ect. This builds the knowledge of the player and therefore gives more solutions to different scenarios independent of the genre played. You may be surprised how many players have in part studied this even if they’re not known for playing jazz. It’s particularly prevalent in music colleges, but benefits all levels of ability.
  19. Crikey. The irony in calling Diskwave’s claim short sighted.
  20. Not CAR but probably the cheapest P bass 😉 https://www.antonyscott.com/products/guitar-minis-precision-bass
  21. Because you don’t learn anything new that way, just carry on rehashing your existing knowledge. Tbf I used to say that simpler lines worked better, until I learned that my timing was off and that was why. So I worked hard on it and now I have a different view.
