  1. I once had one of these. The best colour combination MM ever did IMO
  2. Breaking it down with the example of playing in F. The VI chord is Dm (DFA) The I chord being F (FAC) By playing the I triad over the VI you’d turn it into a Dm7 chord. The II chord is Gm (GBbD) The IV chord is Bb (BbDF) By playing the IV triad over II you’d turn it into a Gm7 chord. Therefore this shouldn’t cause an issue as it’s common to incorporate the 7th in a blues and both the original chords are minor.
  3. Oh how I wish I could have your situation! I’ve normally sold when I need the money and there’s nothing else left. Just thinking back to some of the really cool basses I’ve had and lost!
  4. Wish I could remember what it looked like! Hopefully it’s a great bass.
  5. God dammit! 😂 @rwillett it seems auto correct would agree
  6. That’s fine, just thought it was worth putting the idea forward because you said it wasn’t the best sounding. I don’t think anyone could argue with that. As a Sire owner, I can attest that any bass will only sound or play marginally better (better is obviously completely objective). But it depends how much you are willing to spend to reach nirvana. Bonus of the vintage basses are that, for the moment, they’re also a steady investment.
  7. Because you could is a great excuse and one I hope to use one day. If the sound isn’t there, maybe it could benefit from a pickup rewind?
  8. Luckily there’s lots of music for us to enjoy whether we prefer genre A, B, C ect. Those that you listed are big inspirations of mine because I particularly enjoy the bass playing to those old R&B/ disco tunes. But once you learn more of Jaco’s repertoire, you understand he could do that as well as anybody and still write and arrange on a bass in a way that was unique.
  9. 100% agree. But Jamerson was most prominent or at his peak in the 60s, whereas the this thread is regarding the 70s. As you alluded to, Jamerson’s playing reached a large audience as he was a recording musician for a label (a hired gun). Whereas Jaco was both a songwriter and a significant member in the not so popular jazz fusion genre.
  10. No im still here! GAS still persists but all the boring stuff is robbing me blind.
  11. I thought I might have bought some strings this year but looked at the email receipt and they were from 2023. Time flies!
  12. Probably because it wasn’t a proper P bass 😉
  13. I thought about bootsy and Stanley before posting. Both incredible and I have music from both, but neither put the bass front and centre quite as strikingly as Jaco (although bootsy’s image might give a different narrative). While he wasn’t the first virtuoso, Jaco was the Hendrix of the bass world in the mid to late 70s.
  14. I tend to use both most of the time 😂
  15. He played on some great records in the 60s/ early 70s, like Chris B I particularly enjoy The Jazz Crusaders music. But Jaco pushed bass playing further than anyone has and that started in the 70s.
  16. That’s exactly why I included the Fender body shape…. If someone asked me what a P bass is, Adam Clayton’s Warwick isn’t what comes to mind.
  17. It’s been debated before, but I think Fender body shape and split pickup in the conventional position covers the P bass definition. A double P is allowed but not PJ or any other pickup style.
  18. Good thinking! Old, new and boutiques! I also forgot to treble the number for flats, nickel and steel rounds. So that’s 48 minimum. Add jazz basses into the mix and you will be into @cetera collection numbers.
  19. If you’re going to get a 5 you need multiple to match all your 4 string versions. No use owning a 4 string maple fretless if you don’t have a 5 string variant handy for those 5 extra notes. Speaking of extra notes, best add 24 fret variants of everything just to be safe. I think we’re up to 16 basses so far 😁
  20. If the OP can make it to BD they have one in https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/product/sire-version-2-marcus-miller-u5-short-scale-bass-guitar-natural-2022-pre-owned/
  21. Sire U5 probably a better fit. Squier Mustang classic vibe is another option.
  22. Do you own standing in the shadows of Motown? If not buy that book and a precision with flats and it will all make sense.
  23. Squiers and Sires are both inconsistent with weights. If it’s a potential issue, I’d suggest visiting shops with them in store. I believe they have the same scale length and string spacing which are another two key factors in 5 string comfort.
  24. Sire is a very good starting point. Particularly second hand will retain its value well too should you not get on with it. I preferred the passive version but that’s my preference in all basses.
