Hey bilbo, did you improve your reading through a book or just transcribing a lot? I transcribe quite a bit but wouldn’t say I can read through a transcription without slowing it down or breaking it into sections and learning it a part at a time. I used to have a tutor who could sight read the James jamerson book!

I think his personal situation is irrelevant. He offers a product, that product wasn’t what it should be and therefore he needs to swiftly rectify that for the customer. The fact he hasn’t is his own failure. It sounds like he doesn’t have any input in the actual build of the basses so he should be making sure that business runs smoothly. Whether this thread is like something on talkbass or not, it is important that users share their experiences to help others. I do hope potential buyers are put off and other builders who care more about their product/ customers are rewarded.

Doesn’t a company have to within a certain time period in European law if a product is damaged?

Please just return it and contact overwater basses. You won’t have any issues there.

Top 1% earners have 44% of the worlds wealth. £22k is probably a days work for some. In return they get a (likely) fantastic instrument that could be a great investment, but also an interesting point of topic. “This bass only has two knobs!”

I would send this back and get a bass from somewhere else. When I ordered my Overwater there was communication at every stage and I had a good discussion before the build on the options I would like with no time pressures. Oh and Chris May is great to deal with.

That is ideal. I hated long travel, having to wait around for hours, finding somewhere to eat in the middle of nowhere. Enjoyed playing, especially with the last band, but not worth the agro or when I was working all week too. My last gig was NYE 2018/19 and I’ve just enjoyed learning music for myself since.

A lot of gospel is played on 5/6 and often musicals are written for 5 string. It just gives more options to the player/ composer and is widely available now. If you follow the lee sklar vids on YT he uses his 5 string Dingwalls a fair bit too.

Isn’t the point that the bad stuff can be fixed with parts? My MIM actually came stocked as new with American standard PUs and they were still too timid.

I got a MIM P bass for my 16th birthday. I upgraded the P/Us a long while ago but since I've had it i've been through at least 10 other basses but I've still got and use the P bass daily. Oh, and I got the Gallery to do a fret dress which made a big difference and was pretty cheap. It's fairly light, sounds beefy, stays in tune and plays well. Simple.

How weird, I found the biggest difference with tone open (clip one) and struggled more with the tone closed. To my ears there is more bottom end to the 71 with the bite, and I find with modern passive basses when you add bite (tone) it often takes out some of the depth. I don't own a vintage fender to compare it to but I do have a MIM p bass with the same strings (about a month old) and Lindy Fralin PU's and I would say the tone (especially open) is not far off the Moollon which surprised me. Obviously the Moollon will be a superior instrument in every other way.

Annoyingly (or thankfully) the bass I want is currently way out of my price range which forces we to be happy with what I’ve got.

If you want a wal I would just save and wait for a Wal to show up in your price range. The pro series are a bit cheaper.

If you want similar sound to the 70's Jazz then the Sire V7 has it in spades plus the option of active EQ. The V7 I had was as well built as any other bass I have owned too although I don't know if QA may have dipped since the popularity has increased.

Fair enough. I’ve owned Warwicks and had a NT thumb which had to have the truss rod replaced but was a beautifully crafted instrument. I’d say on the whole they are quite unique. As for Mayones, I’ve only tried one of their Jabba basses (jazz bass copy) so it really is like chalk and cheese. It was a good jazz bass and build quality seemed solid. Not much more to say about it though really.

Why have you chosen those two?
