1. can anyone tell me the type of wood that would have been used for the body in '93...I'm guessing at Ash but not sure!
2.
The early 90s Stingrays are cracking basses. Love the colour as well.
Cheers Alex....I genuinely can't put it down.....I'm currently sat jamming it with some Al Jarreau!
3.
Is that bad boy coming to my birthday mate?
Sure thing! why not....You'll have to have a go...you'll love it!....the sweet sound of wood!
4. Ok I am finally a Stingray owner!! I used to lust after these as a kid but never got round to actually buying one....I forgot how much i love them until i played this one in a local music shop yesterday.....Needless to say I bought it there and then! It was listed as '95 but as you can see when i took her apart she dates '93.....Few dings on her and a v well aged neck which works for me as I wanted something a bit mojo'd! Lovely flame/birdseye maple neck.....weighs in just under 10lbs..... As soon as i put the string mutes up on the E and A I knew it was the sound i've been searching for for sometime....Twas a good day! Hope you like
5. out of interest....what is the serial no. on your bass? I just bought a MM stingray which i was told was '95...however when i researched the serial it dates more like '93.... Would be interested to know as i don't really know how to find out firm what the year is....do they stamp the necks? Dave
6. Sei Jazz 5 string?? pics here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=68066&st=100 Dave
7. Hi mate, quite a selection of basses there..... however, sorry for your bereavement..... You're gonna wanna put up some pictures and more detailed spec on the instruments to have any joy selling them to anyone on here.... Just thought i'd give you a heads up.....I'm particularly keen to see the Wal MKii! Good Luck Dave
8. Little late on this...thought I'd bring mine to the party.... L-R Fender Jazz Deluxe (Wizard 64's and Gotoh replacement bridge), Sei Jazz bass (ebony board Aguilar Pre), Warwick Thumb (Ovangkol body, Custom inlays LED's ) Hope you like!
9. Ok so I actually did the upgrade on my bass back in July, I just kept forgetting to post the result!..... In short it is an incredible difference! the Wizard 64's are fantastic, Front pickup gives me a great 60's thumpy sound and back pickup has bite and clarity....I use La Bella quarter rounds on it... The Gotoh bridge has improved the sustain at least 5 fold! I have to admit i'm surprised it made that big a difference.... All in all I feel i essentially have a new bass for about £100! String output issues have been solved, having twin poles in the pickups has cleared it all up......I even ended up fixing a long standing dodgy tone control while i had the bass opened up....the tone control on it is actually really good, I often find tone control can sound either on or off but this actually has a really good sweep.... So in conclusion i have fallen back in love with my J bass and now use it for a lot more work.....threw some pics in for good measure... Thanks for all your advise on this guys!
10. As well as the P bass? How come you're selling all your new basses?!...
11. check out the LaBella Quarter round strings....I put some on my Jazz to replace flats...they sound great, E and A are nice and thumpy but there is a bit of zing in the D and G....they're not cheap at about 40 quid but def worth it!
12. Tino, I'm really interested in coming to have a go on your P bass, (will call tomorrow)....did it come with the pickup and bridge cover or were they added after? do you have the serial no.? trying to find the spec for a 2008 American standard but without joy, any more info you have on it would be great!...
13. Thanks guys...some interesting stuff General consensus seems to be to try a load of them (won't that be a pain ) tino whereabouts in herts are you? would love to try your P if its still for sale? Obvs if i don't have to I'd rather not spend 1500, should be fun doing some discovering tho!
14. Thanks Lozz.....How do the newer Fender P's compare to the 70's ones? there's a 76 on Ebay at the moment for 1400...
15. Ok so after some more specific posts I've decided to just put it out there and ask you guys what you think the best P style bass to get is..... Obvs i know a lot of people will say Fender but just wanted to test the water, see what else is out there... I currently own a Jazz deluxe 4 string and a Sei 5 string and a fretless warwick thumb, so a nice thumpy P would complete my needs.... Been thinking a bout the Nash basses but can't find anyone that has one or has played one so guys let me know what you think i should try out...budget is up to 1500 Dave
16. Bling! Thats actually a very funky lookin MM...not normally a fan....Good work!
17. So....My constant search for a P bass that i like has now led me to Bill Nash..... Whilst i can't decide how i feel about the relic thing rather than it actually just being old i think i'm leaning toward liking it! (especially when taking into account the price)! I'm thinkng of ordering one of the 63 style basses with a lake Placid Blue finish and a light/medium relic as this is the fender that i one day desire! Has anyone got one of his basses or played one? I've played on of his J basses and loved it more than a 76 Fender J I tried next to it.... Let me know! Dave http://www.nashguitars.com/pb_basses.html#
18. Thanks for the advice, left it well alone after reading the serial no. info, I mean thats just a flat out lie! Now considering buying a Nash PB-63......eyes peeled for that thread coming soon! lol!
19. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Precision-Bas...=item45f4e6f8fe There is a really nice looking re issue 62 P up for sale on E bay, I know that the fullerton re issues are supposed to be good but i thought it was just 82 and 83 really....Whats your opinion on these fullerton re issues? I've been after a vintage P for ages but haven found the right one, would it be a mistake to buy a RI? This has probably been posted a million times so feel free to point me to an old thread! Dave
20. This is my absolute dream bass! Since I first started playing it's been all about a 60's P bass in Lake Placid Blue..... Unfortunately I have nothing to offer PX....If you ever end up selling let me know.... Good luck with it, it's nice reading about a bass that has such personal significance to you Dave
21. Hey guys, been watching this bass for a few days and watching the price drop.....I emailed the guy for some more info on what i thought was a refin but he says is not?! serial no. on neckplate, apparently plays well with no fret wear....Scratch plate looks like a bad fit...is this normal on old fenders? Check out the pics.....Any advice would be appreciated! Dave
22.
Hi, I tried the Tru Bass Strings.. PERFECT.. nice warm, big warm acoustic style sound style sound. The bigger flat strings was the best choice for the Aerodyne bass and a complete different sound to the other jazz which has a more vintage vibe with balls. I like the idea of the Aerodyne for the Groove old skool, or folky, acoustic style and the relic for the pop, rock, and modern stuff. And I'm getting the Terror Bass on sunday.. Good times
terror bass?!!
23. Just did a bit of research and found this; 'American Deluxes produced between 1995 and 1999 were initially available with "single-pole" pickups designed by John Suhr. These were soon changed to the Bill Turner-designed dual-coil Ceramic Noiseless units with nickel-plated (gold-plated on certain models) polepieces until the advent of the Bill Lawrence-designed Samarium Cobalt series in 2004.' From Wiki admittedly but might shed a little light on why my pups were single pole?! Dave
24. Good news!! I ordered some 64's from Andy at Wizard today...hoping to have them by friday....also ordered a Gotoh replacement bridge just cause i hate the standard one..... Fingers crossed this will help...should certainly improve the overall sound i would think?? RE someone swapping the pickups, i guess it is a possibility....I actually bought the bass out in LA and brought it home with me, it was brand new with all the usual garb that accompanies them...someone could have done in the shop i guess? odd thing to do eh? No one told me that the noiseless were newer, i just presumed....haven't done much research so i just thought that the single poles were a trait of that series.... curiouser and curiouser! Also thanks for the offer of borrowing pickups, appreciate it.....however as i say i decided to dive in and buy some wizards.....will keep you posted as to whether they are a success! Dave
25. Thanks for the response guys, appreciate it.... Al, Definitely not 2 bridge pickups, pulled them out and checked today...Have also got the treble end of the pickup raised high.. I have no qualms about disrupting it's 'vintage', it's a mex and is my workhorse bass, just want it to sound as good as possible.. Stacker, i too have not seen a J bass with single poles since it's purchase some 12 years ago....clearly it was a brief and unsuccessful experiment! I am going to call Wizard Pickups and get some 64's fitted i think as i tend to play with flats on it....any idea whether this will be suitable for an active deluxe? If it still isn't right i think i'm going to investigate a replacement bridge.....any recommendations? Badass or Gotoh etc? not sure of the difference if I'm honest! Dave
