1. I wonder how much it would cost to get him to build another of these:
2. June 2011, Geoff. I'll be ordering a job lot of string for it from Status soon I suspect, and getting it out of the case this afternoon for a ditty.
3. He has the tone favoured by most pub covers band players.
4.
2) I don't want to. There are a number of people on youtube (you know who you are) who have copied every single hammer-on, pop, gliss, slap, whatever that gives Mark his very distinctive style. These bedroom/dining room/living room warriors have taken his style and added absolutely nothing of their own to it, even going so far as to use the same guitars, amps, effects, strings as Mark.
And so what? I've got a Status Series II, I occasionally play with .30 guage strings, I have a Mark King signature amp and I love playing Level 42 stuff. But thats not everything I play and I doubt it's everything the youtube guys who do Level 42 playalongs do either. But if you can, why not? After all, I've found the kit that Mark uses to be extremely good. I can assure you it's not just used for Level 42 stuff!
5. Great drummer but I've never heard him playing bass. I remember him playing guitar with that sh*t 'Murderdolls' band along with that nonce from Static X. I think I'd rather he stuck to the drums and Slipknot.
6. Go for it. I have been hammering my Mark King licks and Level 42 tunes relentlessly since I got my Status Series II. I've always loved slap though.
7.
I know guys who play stadiums who can slap, tap, sweep pick and improv jazz till the cows come home - but they can grab a pick and play 8th notes too... it all MUSIC at the end of the day.
This is what always makes me laugh when the 13 year old pipe up with comments like "l0l Vitor W00ten is zo fastttt...but itz all techniques...whr is THU GR00VE?" Because we all know Wooten could knock out 8ths on the root note all day long to a better standard than his detractors. He's actually so good he's went past such plodding. Sure, he can do it, but he can do so much more too.
8. I've always loved Claire's Song by the Yellowjackets, but that has been about the only tune of theirs that has grabbed me. A shame, as it is a slice of really cool, catchy fusion.
9. Because I don't have a fretless anymore. After I had accepted the cost of my Series II, I decided that selling it for cash isn't really worth it so I'd float it out there on the chance that the right fretless comes along and just keep enjoying it in the meantime.
10. bump, still thinking about trades for a fretless...
11. It's as slow as treacle at the moment, but there are still some nice basses showing up there.
12.
You read it though and felt the need to contribute
I read it up to that video where Deal was playing the bassline to some plodding rock song and trying to revel in the glory of it, despite it being so naff Adam Clayton would refuse to play it!
13. Who the f*** is Kim Deal? Oh wait, another dull thread about someone who doesn't like slap/can't slap.
14. Bass tone is a bit lame and the music is pretty naff. The guy clearly knows his middle of the road slap, however!
15. Still entertaining trade offers for a fretless.
16. Is that #1779? I used to own #1777 funnily enough, also a white 1989 model with the 6 position preamp. Was a great bass, not quite as good as my current Ex Factor though.
17.
You can hear him nicely on The Dance of Eternity and on Most of Octavarium (the album)
Well, you can, but his tone was dung, so I'd rather not thanks!
18. Very predictable, thankfully John Myung seems to have returned to the fold as you couldn't hear a bloody thing he was doing when he had those Yamahas! The song itself was nothing special though, the same proggy riffs and irritating keys solos that they've been pedalling for a while now.
19. It really would be worth keeping the Lane Poor pickup in there or at least removing it intact so it can be sold on. Lane Poor pickups are no longer made but they are extremely good and considered the best option for Flea basses alongside Bartolini humbuckers. If you're not liking the sharp, edgy sound it's probably due to the graphite neck. Flea basses growl and sound zingy even with Barts in. You may be better off looking for a different bass.
20. The new site is looking good! Needs more photos of the basses on though, so I look forward to that.
21. It's not a Musicman and it will never be a Musicman. Why stick a Musicman logo on it?
