1. Funny, I was just listening to "RV" by Faith No More and thinking about how awesome Bill Gould is!
2. If you're playing in a context where improvisation is happening, then some creative interpretation can be good as long as you keep it in check and the band doesn't end up playing three different songs at the same time!
3.
Ryan Martinie - Thought I'd throw someone different in...Unfortunately under-rated. Bassist of Mudvayne, my 1st venture into Progressive / Math metal (even though they are called "Nu-Metal")...his tone is unique and technique outstanding! Lets face it, Mudvayne WAS Ryan Martinie!
Ryan is an awesome player. He used to be in a prog metal band (the name escapes me, something like 'Broken Altar') which were described as being very "Dream Theater like" and apprently he was very impressive there. He was one of my favourite metal bassists in the early millenium. It's such a shame Mudvayne went down the pan after "The End of all things to come". His playing on the aforementioned record was absolutely incredible. He drove that band! Then they became a lame rock band, a cheap parody of what they once were.
4. Not really my kind of music but that Yamaha TRB sounds awesome.
5. Looks great! Is there any particular reason that the black finish extends over the neck at the bottom?
6. To me, that previous video would be a good advert not to buy a Stingray! Horrible flat, clanky sounding E string, quiet and harsh sounding D and G strings and some pretty hideous playing too. Luckily, I know they cna sound much better than that!
7. Maybe if it were a grand or two cheaper it'd have been worth it.
8. It's good that you've been open about the neck repairs, which sound relatively minor as you say! It's worth remembering that an Alembic that had had the headstock snapped off and reattached sold here recently for nearly £2000, so a little neck work shouldn't put a potential buyer off. When I think about the best £590 I've ever spent in my time, my thoughts go back to my Warwick Thumb 4 string. Awesome bass, absolutely awesome!
9. My ACG and Kubicki are bedroom basses, I'll take them to the studio but I just don't bother with gigging.
10.
Why so? Just the looks?
I've always felt they were a bit shoddy, I remember playing one when they were brand new at Sound Control Newcastle, and I've played a few since then and they've never impressed me. They look and feel a bit cheap and the fretwork isn't fantastic, the woodwork on the necks was rough and the maple there was noticeably a cheap piece. The sound was always flat and uninspired, even with new strings. I couldn't really figure out why they had been allowed to come out so shoddy, but they feel like cheap old Squier basses tarted up in Fender colours. They are certainly no match for an S3000, or if you're really wanting a Fender type bass, a good CIJ jazz.
11. As for the question of "is it worth it?", it's definitely at the steep end of the price range for a used Wal, considering new ones start at a little over £3000 now. You'd have to figure in the cost of a new fretboard being fitted, preferably by Wal. That'd ramp the cost up quite a bit.
12. They do growl but it's not with the nasal authority of a jazz bass, it's more of a subtle thing, with less obvious upper midrange "honk".
13.
The BTB range gets smaller and smaller each year...
Which is a shame, as they are fantastic basses. But they don't have the same impact now as when they were new. A BTB405QM was my bass of choice for a while in the earlier years of the last decade.
14. If it wasn't for me chasing cars I'd be all over this! Not so sure about the Aerodyne though, I've never been impressed with them.
15. I'm glad Tony is keeping the band going. He is an awesome bassist, and my hat comes off to him for being able to sing the songs while playing them!
16.
I think these guys must live just outside Expert Village - a little place called Numptyville I think...
Funny that neither of them look like they've ever held a bass in their life.
17. Yes, it was a short while before people realised it was seriously uncool! Still, should be an easy job for Wal to refret.
18.
Ahhh ... the days when you could title a song "The Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy" and keep a straight face as you did it.
Thats a Scientology thing though, they still don't see that they're a joke!
19.
I use mine, 3 way switches I always have them set down I think on both... which everone is the more powerful as it just seems to have more 'kick' to it
My bass seems to sound quieter with a more compressed tone when I flick them. Although the bass naturally has a mildly compressed sound already which is something that really suits it!
20.
There's still a few around £300 in the UK, if they creep down to around £200 when the new ones arrive then i might grab one, esp a fretless From what i recall on my old German Streamer Standard the one piece bridge is the same. In fact the entire bass is identical apart from neck/fingerboard wood although my German one didn't have the strat style jack socket that the RB did
Given that GAK are selling Squier basses at £300+ I doubt you'll see a Rockbass get that cheap!
21. Well, it's been a few years since I've seen that video! The Rick was perhaps unsurprisingly retired in favour of his Alembic basses!
22. Remember to take lots of photos!
23. Do people ever use the coil splitting options though? I have two RFB pickups in my ACG Harlot singlecut, which are the "Musicman" style design pickups from ACG. The bass also has coil splitting and phase switches (or something like that, two little flip switches that alter the tone). I never use these, as the bass sounds best with them left neutral!
24.
Ahh, the Warwick is a 4-string (perhaps one too few for you?). How it looks?! Image is nothing, tone is everything and the $$ is king
As far as Warwick go, the $$ is not the kind. The Thumb is the one, even when people can't get on with the looks, feel or balance (I never had any trouble with mine), the Thumb is easily the most "Warwick" sounding Warwick bass!
