Pre Fender parts and build with the Fender custom shop stamp (much like my other Kubicki). This particular Ex Factor was my first top end bass that I bought with hard earned cash from my first job! I loved this bass, although if I'm honest it's not quite as good as this one which I have now (#1659, also a 1989 model): This one sounds a little bit more aggressive and powerful in the midrange than the other one did, and it plays a bit better too. However, they're both fantastic basses and I'd easily have both of them. I think I'll always be a Kubicki addict; Phil is a fantastic guy for customer support and his basses are top notch. I just play my Kubicki and think "wow" because there really is nothing else that looks, feels or sounds like a Kubicki. Every time I listen to Stuart Hamm I'm reminded of how amazing these basses are. I traded the white Kubicki for a Status Stealth bass, biiiiig mistake sadly!

Big farty, wooly sounding bass that doesn't sound very even at all! I know it's a P/J type affair but it really doesn't sound great to me! The bottom end was wooly and flappy sounding, the mids were non existant (probably by choice) and the highs were muted and flat as a fart.

If it takes a single 9V battery and has the Fender custom shop stamp it's a Fender era Kubicki. You'll notice it doesn't have the 6 position preamp of Pre Fender, crossover and post Fender models. I used to have a white Ex Factor too, that was another class bass. Not as good as the red one I have now though, between that and my ACG, I've never been so happy with my collection.

These Dingwall basses are becoming much more popular in this country now! I remember when they seemed to be a totally American trend. Still, they are beautifully made, but I'm not wholly convinced by their usefulness as a 4 string. Against an old design like a Fender they do sound noticeably more balanced and even and they feel great too, but against a modern bass like a graphite necked Statii or a well made singlecut I don't find them to be worth the extra cash, so to speak. Still, they are a design evolution (Novax fanned frets) and I commend them greatly for being so daring!

Those Bona Imperials are lovely. His is particularly nice - perhaps the spec I'd go for if I ordered a Fodera (with a better* preamp than the typical Fodera fare of course) *better for my tastes

Ebay seem pretty poor at handling things in general but if you've got even the slightest suspicion abouit this guy (and quite rightly so) I'd pull the plug.

I would just sell it back rather than pay more to keep hold of it.

If I have one issue with the Bongo it's knowing that the body is basswood. Still, they are well finished in a variety of attractive finishes and they sound good so it's not a massive issue!

Yeah, I really like CLaypool's 32" scale bass and the Antimatter bass but a lot of Carl's work doesn't inspire me. However, he did pretty much start a design movement that is still going strong with many luthiers today.

And I even sold an Alembic 5 string here recently for £600! You can find the bargains if you look!

Clean with a cloth and keep them tidy. If the fretboard needs a rub with oil I'll do that too.

It's fantastic to see it, but definitely not for me. As in so many of Carl's basses, the pickup is so bloody far away from the bridge it could only sound awful! It's very pricey too, and I appreciate that Carl may well be retired now but his basses don't seem to generate the same excitement they once did.

That is stunning. Terrible shame he has lost it, and I hope he gets it back!

The chase is good, so long as the catch isn't a let down (Fender Urge Standard...!).

Their customer service really has come on leaps and bounds from when they started a few years ago. The staff are very helpful there now.

It depends, if it's not a special Rebop it's an alright price. Although you'd be better of putting that money towards something better. However, if it's one of the Rebop DLX basses with the special top woods on then it'd be a damn good deal!

Yes, I'd advise trying a mid range 5 string first. Just incase the 5 string thing doesn't really suit you, it means you're not too far out of pocket with a high end bass thats hard to shift! I traded a Kubicki Ex Factor for a Status Stealth 6 string and whilst it was a class bass, I really didn't need or get on with having 6 strings, so I ended up selling it. It just wasn't right for me. If you're serious about spending that sort of money, do yourself a favour and get a ticket to the Bass Gallery in London. Try as many 5 strings as you can from the big name brands and find out what you like. Even if you don't buy anything then, it'll give you some good pointers for your search.
