Fender (Stu Hamm) Urge
Don't forget though, with Stu's basses there is something of a catch. First of all, there was the "Urge Standard", basically a pretty naff 32" scale active jazz bass. I had one briefly and whilst it was lovely and light it sounded pretty crap and felt cheap. And with Stu's "Urge II" basses, he uses ones made in the Fender Custom shop handmade by Todd Krause. They are, of course, amazing instruments!
Shame he didn't use it when I saw him last week - left it on the side of the stage with the LED's glowing but didn't go near it once
The bass in question is an Alembic Stanley Clarke with a huge dragon inlay. I don't think it has LED's though so you must have seen a different bass! I know that the dragon bass was used to record some of "The Toys of Men" though, and what a record that is!
Vic also plays a five string Joe Compito fretless.
He also has a 6 string fretted Compito, an old school Graphite Steinberger, a Kubicki Ex Factor and an old long scale Alembic (either a Series I or II) which he had in the early 80's - the story being that he bought that bass when he had the money for it when he was young and used it non-stop. He was recording in NYC when a producer told him he didn't like the bass and sent him out to get another one. Vic came back with his Monarch "#1" bass and the rest is history! As for bassists getting free basses, I just don't think the small luthiers can afford it! However, Stanley Clarke did get a free Alembic Stanley Clarke bass as as gift after buying Alembic basses for 30 years!

Michael Manring is the man. I wish he'd do another record with David Cullen though, the "Equilibre" stuff is as good as it gets!
@Chris2112: What Mayones model do you mean? I guess it's Mayones BE, am I right? (can't find any Mayo guitar on The Bass Gallery website) BE is the most basic Mayones bass, I would not even compare it to Victorious. I'd rather compare it to Warwick Corvette Proline. Victorious is like from other, better world. Btw, thanks for the comment!
I think it must have sold now! Anyway, this one looks loads better if I'm honest!

How long is the bass in your hands each day?
Chris2112 replied to arthurhenry's topic in General Discussion
Probably around 30 mins a day or thereabouts. -
I have to admit, since I got my ACG my status GAS has decreased considerably but I don't think it will ever go away - maybe I'll buy that Jonas Hellborg bass I've been thinking about for ages soon!

I've recently discovered how fantastic singlecuts are. Other than that, I love headless basses!
Anyone else notice that when you get more than one bass player in a frame it starts to look like rehab for sex offenders?
You might look like a sex offender but I'm not sure about the rest of us!
-
I've never seen anyone who can copy Manring. There are plenty of very talented King/Wooten/Jaco clones but no-one can do what Michael does - they can't afford the basses to do it either!
-
If you can get away with playing like that, then great! If you find you start to struggle then maybe adopting a two finger "classic" plucking style would be better. I doubt you'll be able to knock out 16th note finger funk with that style but it all depends on what you're playing.
True, but if one doesn't know the difference between pre-CBS and CBS, he/she shouldn't buy basses from those periods :-) (And if it were in fact a pre-CBS, it would have been the bargain of the year! ;-)
Why not? Surely you can buy whatever you like?
-
I think they can be pretty good, it all depends who is playing and also where they are playing. In a room with good acoustics where you're not just going to get a low frequency mush they can sound great. I've always loved the first minute of this, particularly Kai's fretless lines:
If that is Brazilian Rosewood, then they must've searched high and low for the shitiest piece they could find I have basses with Brazilian Rosewood fretboards, and they are a reddish/brown colour with dark grain patterns on them
It looks like they've worked hard to source all the shittiest parts possible!

I'd like a 4 string ACG Harlot singlecut fretless and a Status Kingbass Artist I think!
Nope, no tax barriers within EU. Apart from Åland between Finland and Sweden, that is. I know you brits are eurosceptics and all, but really, this is elementary stuff, man!
I only ask as I thought if I bought this I would incur charges at customs and excise and VAT coming in. I was recently looking at trading my Alembic for a Marleaux bass which was in Germany and I wondered if I would be charged for that! However, I bought my ACG so the rest is history!

Looks like rosewood to me. The bass is a total scrapper though, what a disaster.

Scoop, I'm glad to be the owner of this bass! I hope to be able to come to one of the ACG meets in Moffat one year and bring it with me, and if I were ever going to a Basschat bash I'd have to think long and hard about taking this or my Kubicki.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the construction is set-neck. Not that it matters really. Superb instruments in every way!
You are indeed correct, another late night mistake from my work weary eyes! Having looked at those pictures there, I think I'll have to get it out for a go before work later!

Glad you had a good time! Sadly, I think Stan is tending to stay away from the electric bass now as he feels his last record is a fairly definitive electric statement and he wants to spend more time on the upright. Which is a shame as I've no interest in upright bass and Stan is one of my favourites on electric! However, it could turn out to be like the early 90's when Jonas Hellborg declared that he prefered acoustic basses to electric ones, and still played the majority of his stuff with electric basses (yay!).
