1. It would have to be my 1989 Kubicki Ex Factor. I've yet to find anything that looks, plays or sounds as good as it. It's dependable, and always sounds great. Since I spend most of my time in the studio now, not playing live, I can afford to look after it too. Its one of those absses that you know, whatever you need from it you'll get it!
2. This bass is now sold. Steff has just been to pick the bass up and quite frankly blew me away with a spot on fretless rendition of "The Chicken" while he was here! I can only take my hat off to Steff, he has been a true gent and has travelled the length of the country today at leass than 16 hrs notice to collect the bass. He seems to love it though and I suppose I can ask for little more than that, I've got what I paid for the bass and he's got a good deal and a bass that he'll be able to make great use of. So that closes another chapter in the life of this bass, what an absolute gem it has been. Thanks again to everyone who sent PM's asking about the bass and I apologise if I haven't answered every one of them.
3. Not that I could really justify buying it mind Ovi, saying as I'll be spending nearly twice as much on an ACG this week! I'm sure it will sell soon though and go to a good home!
4. Just a couple more days...but how will I wait!
5. Newcastle! Good grief, had I not bought one bass already this week I'd have been buying this!
6.
I've played Warwicks for 20 odd years and despite dabbling with a multitude of other basses I always come back to Warwick; in particular the NT Streamers (the earlier the better)... my Corvette/Infinette comes a close 2nd. A couple of recent GAS purchases have reinforced that I'm sticking to my Warwick (i.e. they are up for sale), though I'll still admire other basses.
That Zon is just out of this world!
7.
Mark is the King, and has done more for British bass playing than anyone else...nuff said.
I couldn't agree more!
8. Nice jazz! But it looks as though Steff will be along today to pick it up. Updates to follow!
9. I think its a great idea. You can assume that the sounds will never be more than a "ball park" kind of approximation of what the basses like, but it's nice to have something rather than nothing! For instance, check out the sound clips of the Kubicki I'll link below. These have been on the Kubicki website for ages and are played by Vail Johnson, who has used Kubicki basses for years. They give a good idea of what a Kubicki sounds like out of the box through a fairly transparent preamp. But even then, I can see how basses can sound different next to each other. My first Kubicki Ex Factor sounded closer to this sound than the one I have now does, and they were played through the same amp with the same strings. http://www.kubicki.com/player.php clip 9 is rather good. The Kubicki I have now sounds a lot more like the one in the clip below. Funny, as both basses are 1989 models with Fender custom shop stamps and are part of the few "crossover" models that have the custom shop stamp but were assembled in the original shop with the original staff and parts.
10. I used to have a Squier VMJ fretless and whilst it was well put together I really longed for it to have a thicker sound with more midrange. It came off sounding a bit thin and clangy, but it was still very useable.
11. Well, I could always change my mind but I don't really think I can in these circumstances. I can afford to keep the Alembic, but I'd rather not. It would spend more time in it's case than it should, when there are clearly many people who would really enjoy it on a regular basis. If I could have afforded to do so, I'd have kept all my past basses, including the Status, Spector, Warwick, Kubicki basses etc etc. All of these sold or traded for more basses! I'm a bit of collector as you'll know Ovi, and it's nice to look back and say "I owned this and that". I'm sure someone will love this Alembic like I do, and it'll be well played!
12. This is a cool video for big Al fans:
13.
What does that say about Mark King & his Alembic bass then?
If there is one thing that an Alembic Mark King bass says about it's owner, it is that the owner has awesome taste in basses!
14.
Why is it all the interesting s/h basses are in Scotland?
I thought they were usually in Bristol!
15. The Pedulla buzz basses are excellent, if you can live with the strange body shape!
16. Update: The bass is provisionally sold to Beneath it All as of saturday when he attends to collect my Trace Elliot head. However, I've spoken with Steff and I'm attempting to honour my intial agreement with him about the sale of the bass. If Steff can attend mine on thursday and buy the bass, it'll be gone. If not, it will go to Beneath It All. If both of these deals disintegrate, I'll let the forum know and I'll look back through my list of PM's and see who is next in line.
17.
It's just different, IME/IMO, and you need to use both hands in a slightly different way to control or accentuate the mwaah. I play fretted so rarely now that I actually find it more difficult than fretless (although I do appreciate the way everything's automatically in tune ). It's just a question of what you're used to.
Indeed, once you've got the left hand work down a fretless it's fairly simple. You just need to get used to playing "on the fret" as opposed to just behind it, if you're thinking in fretted bass terms.
18. Steff, I'll get back to you when I get home.
19. It looks as though this bass is provisionally sold to Beneath It All. Mike was already coming to mine on saturday to buy my Trace Elliot head so it makes it a convienient transaction for me in that he'll buy the Alembic too. So consider this thread ON HOLD pending sale. I appreciate all the PM's I've had, if there is any further notification neccessary (Eg Mike Can't make it and the bass doesn't sell on saturday) I'll be straight back to the thread to update the other members with their fingers on the button!
20.
Someone is going to be a happy camper.
That'll be me come friday! I'm hoping to get into into the studio and give it the big licks with the midrange!
21.
If you are a fretless player (I am rubbsih) this has to be the bargain of basschat. Must be best part of 1500 quid cheaper than new and less than a Mexican (RW) Fender.
A new 4 string Epic will cost about £3000 or thereabouts through an Alembic dealer. Used 4 strings have sold in the past couple of years for over £1000 at the Gallery! So yeah, I'm putting out a bargain here, in the mind that if we all share our good deals on basses we'll be a community where trade is good! I'm in two minds about keeping it but I had to convince my lass about a new bass and selling this was the answer!
22. This bass is now for sale for £600 with it's hardcase collected from Newcastle Upon Tyne. I was planning on trading it but I've went and bought a new bass so I'll need to replace some of those funds! I've decided to return the good fortune I got on these boards and sell it for the price that I paid for it, in keeping with passing a good deal on, hoping more will come my way in future! I'll be taking some better pictures of it this week if I can get a digital camera. One must really take a step back in these circumstances and consider that £600 here is getting you a bass that was handmade to the highest quality by the world's best luthiers in California. It is a sensational bass with a sensational price. At that price, you could buy it to dabble in fretless and get what is quite conceiveably the best fretless bass you'll ever play! First refusal is with Steff but if anyone else is interested please let me know and I'll get back to you once I've heard from Steff.
23. I happen to know that a 5 string Alembic Epic fretless has just come up for sale for £600 on the boards...!
24. Still looking pretty there! I'd have thought this would have flew out the door given the resurgence of interest Level 42/Mark King but it just goes to show how slow the market is at the moment Gary!
