1. Is this one of the Walnut bodied thumbs?
2. This reminds me of the bass that Jaco had on the instructional video he made, which was also his best sounding fretted imo! Even though it wasn't his bass! Looks lovely, I have to say!
3.
I'm an anti-smoking Nazi, but even I'll admit The Bass Place was never the same after the air cleared.
I'll admit, it had a certain smokey charm before the refurb! I've played some cracking basses there over the years!
4.
It won't work. Howard.
I dunno, I'm not sure how happy I'd be smoking all over the brace of Alembic and Fodera basses I am planning on stocking! Maybe I'll buy basses that are exclusively headless so I can have more room for stock!
5. Sadly Howards shut down, and thus the chance of finding anything really cool for a good price is gone! I might reopen the old Nun Street store as a bass boutique now, no smoking allowed!
6. Sounds like he has his bass plugged directly into a farting elephant!
7. I think the question is perhaps along the lines of the "big name tagging" that goes on on ebay. You know, the advert title is something like "el cheapo fretless bass WARWICK FENDER ALEMBIC" or whatever!
8.
An Aria Pro II SB-LTD - Aria craftsmanship married to Alembic electronics. I'd settle for an SB R-150 though.
Do they not do one with a bridge pickup and the crazy electronics package?
9. The first time I saw Level 42 was at the Gateshead Sage and they were awesome. Crap support act though! I might have to see if I can get some tickets to this, see if I can get myself to a third level 42 gig!
10. A Status Hellborg please! And a fretless Thumb!
11. Although the name is apparently pronounced the same as the fish, not the instrument!
12. I have to say Warwickhunt, that I'm sure I played that Streamer at Howards a few years ago. I'm sure I may have already told you this. It was battered, the frets were green with gunk, the bass was filthy and the action was awful. But I thought with a bit of a fix up it would be cracking, and look at it now! Talking of basses that got away, I actually spotted my old Status Matrix bass for sale on Ebay just a couple of days ago! Looks like it has been through a couple of hands since I let it go, but I didn't fancy having it back because I like to try out new basses! That said, there are two basses from the past that I still think about a lot and wouldn't mind getting back! The first is my Status Stealth mk1 bass. It was my first 6 string and despite sounding awesome, I just wasn't enjoying playing it that much. I sold it to a bloke whom I believe lived in Wales but was from Crewe. I'm sure he drove a silver Vectra. Anyway, I sold the bass through Bassworld or Basschat, met him and handed the bass over and that was that! It was a cracking bass though. And of course, the other one is my old Kubicki, #1777. Made in 1989, I got it when I was 16. This was truely an awesome bass, aside from my Thumb its probably the one that "clicked" with me the most. I'd have this back if I found it, not just for nostalgia but also because it kicks loads of ass! Funnily enough on Talkbass I found the guy who has #1778!
13. That bass sounds amazing! What a slap tone!
14. I have to say, the worst sound engineer I've ever had the pleasure of working with was a woman. Not that that has anything to do with her doing a rubbish job mind, her "stuff it" attitude and general ineptitude around the desk was responsible for the sonic calamity that resulted...
15. If this was fretless I'd have torn your arm off!
16. For me, I don't really mind listening to a lot of slap playing, as long as it is done well! As in, more Stuart Hamm and less Fieldy! I guess it is just a territorial thing, as me "me slap loudest and fastest, me take women back to cave" or something. Still, I don't mind it even though fingerstyle is my go-to.
17.
Yummmm!, tempted... What state are the tuners in? I have had bad experiences with them self-destructing in the past.
Indeed! I never had any trouble with the bridge or tuning systems in the past (once I had figured out how to change the strings!). I have heard of problems in the past where the teeth on the tuning wheels can be worn off and thus the wheel won't lock anymore - meaning you can never get the bass in tune! However, Philip Kubicki is fantastic to deal with, very helpful and he'll often send replacement parts free if you'll pay the shipping cost! However, get your freebies in quick because it has been rumored that Phil is planning to retire soon (after all, he has been in the business for ages, he worked for Fender R&D in the 1970's trying to build them a headless bass!). All that being said, this bass looks to be in awesome condition and if I were in the market for another Kubicki I'd buy it straight away. Looking at the date there, I'm assuimg this is a Fender era Kubicki with the 9V preamp?
18. Aye, I have never found neck dive to be a problem. Mind you, I do wear my bass Mark King style high, which is how the Thumb is meant to be worn! But it never neck dives. Also dispelling the common Thumb myth, it doesn't feel like a boat anchor. It is a heavy bass, and definitely feels more "solid" than anything I've ever owned, but it never feels like a terrible weight. I guess that is because the weight is focused in such a small area that supporting it isn't a problem!
19. This is a smashing deal. My 1999 Thumb with no marks and a Wenge neck cost me £590, just a smidge less than this. If I had the money, I'd be buying this as I desperately want a fretless thumb or a thumb to get defretted! As it stands, I find the the Thumb is a very peculiar bass. Once you have one, you'll be hooked and nothing else will suffice. In amongst Kubicki, Spector, Status and Fender basses, my Warwick Thumb has been my favourite of the lot. I won't let it go, being without it is simply not an option as it is so incredibly unique and "specific" yet so versatile. Don't listen to the guff that people say when they hear Warwick and think metal or funk rock, I use mine for fusion, RUSH, pop, a bit of everything! Cracking bass for a cracking price!
20. I have always loved that version of the tune. The first version of Gracelands I had was the re-isssue. I prefer the original version, bit it is simply without a doubt my favourite fretless bass line of all time!
21.
I was gigging over Rowlands Gill way but I actually live near the coast!
Even better, I'm a Gosforth man!
22.
YES... stop looking and at least come and give it a try; you might hate it!
Isn't Rowlands Gill near Wylam? I might have to pop in during a journey home from work (without the wife's knowledge of course!).
23. Hmm, payday and birthday monies have just been paid in...I need to stop looking at this!
24.
And me what is the diference ?
Streamer Stage one - typically, maple neck and body, often with P/J pickups. Stage two - Afzelia body and neck with wenge stringers in the neck. Also has the "yin yang" inlays. Typically with jazz bar shaped single coil pickups.
