Cool to see Mark with a Fender - though it makes me want a proper Status even more. He had a really short Fender period didn't he?
Indeed, although IIRC they were a limited run of 42 and apparently suffered from some quality control issues! However, much like the GB basses he uses on the Ohne Filter dvd, the main problem with them in my mind is that they just don't sound that great! Especially not next to everything else Mark has played over the years!

Warwick have changed the shape of their standard neck this year
Chris2112 replied to peted's topic in Bass Guitars
Very good news indeed! I have a '99 Thumb with a rather slim neck on it (for a Warwick, anyway!). I much prefer that profile to some of the clubbier models of the new millenium. -
Basses: Aside from a couple of Alembics and Wals, mainly custom made Warwick Thumbs, fretted and fretless. Amps: Jonas Hellborg's Warwick stuff. In fact, I'd try and pay Jonas for a couple of lessons because he is one of my all time favourite players. I still can't play Escape like he does!

Mark King picks his nose and rubs bogeys into his hair

When you're that good you can get away with it. -
not a g&l headstock though, is it??
An early prototype, perhaps?
That was my first thought, but i thought they didn't start G&L about 1980. and that picture looks earlier. no matter. i have to get off this Pc and find something to do.
Looks like a G&L to me. What makes you think the pic is earlier than 1980?

Plus, if you suck, the worst that can happen is you get sacked from the band.
I don't mean to rain on your parade, but there's plenty of other threads full of people enjoying their Fenders, Musicmen, Warwicks and such-like. This celebrates those luthiers who have decided to follow a less mainstream route.
On the case of Warwick, don't you think that they are a company that only became mainstream because of their success? Certainly, they started out as "weird and wonderful". They were an early adopter or the NS body shape and the "bowl back" body cut (which is pretty damn amazing). Models like the Thumb and the Dolphin are some of the most recognisable "strange shaped" bodies around today. And their choice of woods has given the brand it's own signature tone, which is instantly recognisable. Warwick were most certainly weird and wonderful, and simply because they were rather good and well marketed, they became sort of what I would call the afficionado's choice of mainstream basses. You see, these basses: are a bit more "weird and wonderful" (and a lot cooler) than this:
Rounds - if I wanted my bass to sound like it was being played in the shed at the bottom of the garden I'd buy a double bass
+1 I actually like the harpsichord sound. I will never go back to flats.

Papa Roach - crazy bass swinging in video :|
the last 20 secs is probably the only nice and audible bass part he's ever done
If you think that's the only audible stuff he's done you need to listen harder. I never bought any of their albums apart from Infest, but that had him stamped all over it. He kept every tune together, and was definitely one of the best players in nu metal. He also had a great tone for that album too. They seem to have become an emo act these days, and I've far outgrown them, but Tobin could fairly play in that setting. -
I've been trying to play ALways With me Always With you for ages. I can't get the tapping right.
I remember when I learned the tapped version of that song after seeing Stu doing it...my, that was a few years ago now! Hell of a tune, especially when you're tapping the bassline!

I was just speaking to a friend of mine about this today. He's got a bit of cash to burn and often pops into the bass shops in London for a quick snoop when he is down there. As soon as I mentioned the Bass Cellar he seemed to sour slightly, and told me he'd been there before but was quickly put off by the fact that the staff didn't seem interested in entertaining him as a customer. And he's a bloke of nearly 40 with a smart look, basically a walking wallet, if they took the time to talk to him. But he likes good customer service, and obviously felt that this lot, who seemed "bored and disinterested" and seemed unwilling to engage in conversation, were not worth his timr or money. I really must go there to see this for myself.
i don't think i've ever seen a drop D tuner at the bridge before, aren't they usually on the machine heads?
Ibanez have been doing it for quite a while now. I remember having the 2001 catalogue with the AX series (I think that the name of them, the ones John 5 used to play) having the detuner at the bridge. Nice bass too!

I've always loved Claypool's playing (definitely one of the most talented guys to play to a mainstream audience in the 90's) but I've enver really loved Primus! They've got a few good tunes but I can't listen to them for very long, which is a shame.
