1.
I have this version on my iPod, you can hear the rest of the track in the spill from the vocal take headphones.
Do you suppose it's the vocal headphones where that comes from? I had noticed it on a few part of the track if you listen to it with the volume turned right up, mainly the distant sound of the guitar coming through; it has that really sparkly sound that cuts through.
2.
They were EMG's budget range. The only bass I've had them in was a Hohner Jack, which sounded okay.
Same here. I have heard some people say that they are exactly the same as EMG's more expensive pickups, just in a different casing. I doubt that very much. But they weren't as dire as some people make out.
3.
What is it about the necks? (Wal virgin here)
A lot of them have quite a pronounced 'V' profile, a lot of people don't like it. It's unlike anything else I'd played but I don't mind it, though the necks aren't the best necks in the world. I can live with that though, and still enjoy the bass. I expect with the super expensive custom Wals being made at the moment, you could have youe pick of neck shape.
4. This was a track from the Japanese special edition of Graceland. It is marvellous. The alternate version of Homeless is fantastic too.
5. I wouldn't just recommend any Stanley Clarke album - you might end up with a Clarke/Duke project record by mistake! And they're bloody crap!
6. This tune sounds really dated now (and it is!), but there is no denying that the main guitar theme is genius. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLroVhaSCWo
7.
One to avoid Mick Karn - Titles. (Loved Mick with Japan, but this IMHO is total crap)
It's very different, but there are a lot of great songs on it, and some great bass parts too. It shows that Karn was a talented musician and writer, rather than just being an interesting bassist in a fairly naff pop band.
8. For a Newcastle band, they never seem to play live in Newcastle that often!
9. Could you link us to the comparison? As I love the sound of Kubicki basses and Yamaha TRB's and I'd love to hear the recording.
10. Endless Nameless is undoubtedly one of the best rock records ever made, what a masterpiece.
11. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVqyJrMmQQY Been listening to this and learning the bass part over again, having forgotten most of it in the intervening six or seven years!
12. Wals sound like Wal basses. A few other basses sound similar too. A Wal does sound unique, but you could also do a Justin Chancellor and slather it in effects so much that it could be any bass he is playing! If you want to hear the Wal sound without too much interference, check out Power Windows or Hold Your Fire by Rush, or some old Jonas Hellborg videos on Youtube, he often used Wal basses in the 80's and early 90's.
13.
Radiate - Enter Shikari, love the heavy electronic synth intro and is a lot like their older stuff
That takes me back! I had completely forgotten about Enter Shikari. At the time I thought they were hopeless posh boys, but one of my mates learned the guitar part to Jonny Sniper, so I learned the bass part and we used to jam to it. I always quite liked that song despite being quite embarrassed to admit it. Some of it is quite naff, but some of the parts where the guitar is picking out those little lines with the bass driving beneath it, and the lockup between the guitars and the drums...are actually quite good! I was considering this gem last night, from a time before 36 Crazyfists started turning out albums of hokey rubbish. Atmosphere, groove, this has it all. That delay sound on the guitars give this such a massive, desolate feel. It has that touch of Alaska to it! 14.
I'm genuinely interested to find out what you consider worthwhile and of acceptable 'merit'.
I have been enjoying this tune lately. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln6R3Neb9iI
15.
Most of that is very funny, but Trent Reznor claiming that Marilyn Manson will 'cross any line of decency' must've forgotten that he was famous for the line 'I want to #### you like an animal'.
Just comes off as a jealous whining tart, given that Manson was not only quite astute in masterminding his own meteoric rise to popularity. Of course, after Holywood Manson went creatively bankrupt and fell from grace just as quick as he went up. But Reznor never offered anything of merit so he is hardly well placed to criticise Manson.
16. Suffice to say I would also trade this for a Carvin Allan Holsdworth Fatboy guitar, if anyone has one...!
17.
Cobain had Guns and Roses about right...the nadir of bad hair metal.
He's one to talk though, Nirvana were just as crap as GNR.
18. I don't know who Mark E Smith is but he seems to have the measure of Mumford and Sons. What a sh*t band.
19. I should listen rather than skipping straight to that fantastic playing!
20. I wasn't aware Modulus had ever made a headless bass, aside from the old Steinberger cricket bat copy thing.
21. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrawLGsrEbg Some tasty playing, but what is that bass? I'm looking at it but I can't work it out. My best bet is a Clover or a Schack perhaps? Some great pick playing in this tape too.
22.
Had been based up in Harrogate but under 20% of sales were coming from an area loosely attributable to 'the north'
We're all tightfisted up here!
