1.
If I see a guitarist with a PRS and MesaBoogie, I tend to roll my eyes in disgust. There goes somebody who has gone into their average high street music shop and bought the most expensive stuff they had... and convinced themselves it sounded good.
Yes, I have never been that impressed with PRS guitars, tonally. But the top end ones are one of the ultimate 'flash your cash' guitars, so if you're the kind of person who solves most dilemmas by throwing money at the most expensive option they will appeal. Despite sounding pretty run-of-the-mill.
 2.
He is what I would describe as " a mugs eyeful " of a bass player - once you strip away the flash and all the histrionics there isn't that much substance there compared to a lot of other less celebrated players
What a joke. I always think it's funny though, how some uneducated folk would write Mark King off as 'flash and histrionics'. Still, I suppose to the untrained ear and mind, his technique and style may sound confusing.
 3.
Oh God, he's one of those people who chews his own notes. Yuk.
He is supremely talented though.
 4. Indulge yourself, or trade me something! You only live once! I hasten to add that I can add a sizeable amount of cash towards a trade too, should the right bass come along.
 5. Yes, not sure where I got that idea from... Anyway, bump for the weekend.
 6. Bumping this bass after a long hiatus. Looked like it was sold, alas was not to be. As above, trade value around £900-£1000. For sale for £900. Ideally looking for a trade as the money would undoubtedly go towards another bass! But I will listen to any offer, so please don't hesitate to get in touch. As before, I can add cash for the right bass on a trade. Chris
 7. The extended low B on these has been debated time and time again. The science seems to suggest it is at best, a 'snakeoil' option. But the low B's on these basses are beyond reproach. So make of that what you will!
 8.
But..... You don't need to wax the stained (Maple-bodied) ones, because the coloured finish "seals" the body.
Well yes, the coloured finished Warwick basses I would treat like any other. No open grain to worry about there.
 9. Warwick's guidance on their open grained necks was that they don't need to be waxed. The rest of the bass does. The neck will be naturally treated with oils from your hand whilst you play; those oils won't end up on parts of the bass you never touch, hence the need to wax. If you start waxing the neck, you'll quickly build up a layer of wax that will probably feel even worse to the hand. I'm not exactly sure what to do about your neck feeling 'bobbly' and sticky at the moment though. Some lemon oil may help, but I can't see how that will cut through the grime or whatever it is that's spoiling it for you at the moment?
 10. That is the problem with auditioning singers. You are more likely to get an utterly talentless idiot turn up than for any other band role. Most people who think they can sing can't. They've had a go in the bathroom and they think they're pretty good, but when you put them against a musical backdrop they tend to sound dreadful and realise that they're not very good at all. At the other end of the spectrum, you can get decent singers who have spent enough time gigging to form a whopping ego, who seek to see every musical project focus on them because they're the singer. It's a chore, unlike finding a good guitarist!
 11.
seriously? I am, like many others here, in both Talkbass and Basschat. In Basschat since 2010 and in Talkbass since 2007. By far this is the friendliest of the two. There are great people over at TB, but there is more of a sycophantic attitude when it comes to "respected long standing members", and a more aggressive discussion where opinion and fact are often treated as one and the same.
Basschat is far superior for discussion. Not that I didn't see the best and worst of Talkbass over several years using the site, and 17,000 posts there. Ultimately, I got into dispute with the mods there, ostensibly because I had criticised a player. That player was also a member on the site and I was pulled for some arbitrary rule violation, purporting that my posts were offensive to that member and hence I was in breach of a rule. The dispute rumbled on for a while, and I locked horns with a well known moderator on the site. I knew then that I was never going to win, this was a moderator famed for his 'way of thinking' and dishing out punishments to those who didn't agree with his view of the bass world. It seemed as though TB was being run by a small clique of moderators in lieu of the actual owners. I told the moderator what I thought of his trumped up position and subsequently saw my account deleted. Ultimately, it was a fight I was never going to win. I wanted freedom of expression and the right to say I didn't like a particular player, or that I thought such and such a record was lacklustre. Unfortunately, that player was probably more likely to generate Talkbass revenue, so I was canned. I can't say I miss it. I created a new account so I could use the site for references, but I've only made a handful of posts. And whilst I post far less here on Basschat, I do feel the individual discussions are of far more interest and value. I must have had the 'best bass for metal' discussion on TB a million times.
 12. I've never had it happen to me personally but I did see plenty of this sort of stupidity when I worked at a hotel. I think the key thing there was that the bands were hired for the function (I was in conference and banqueting), the punters weren't there specifically to see the band. And whilst most could enjoy the band for the entertainment they provided, there would always be one or two idiots who would: * shout and heckle the band * ask for stupid cover songs * climb on stage * pour a drink into a brass instrument * ask to play an instrument for a song
 13. Funny, a mate of mine who loves his hi-fi gear has found a pair of Sennheiser HD410's which he's giving me. I'll need to collect them from his place, but for free gear, that's pretty cool of him! I'll order a Pandora when I have the cash to spare (car needs new tyres and insurance next month). Until then, bass in the bedroom it is!
 14.
No problem whatsoever.A Rickie tuned to B is almost par for the course in certain types of music.
And what type of music would that be?
 15.
I can kinda see why Jason's writing didn't make it onto Metallica albums (I thnk he got co-writing credits on three songs in his 14 years in the band).
I think that was also largely to do with Ulrich and Hetfield keeping such tight control on the creative process. Hammett didn't really get a look in either, and that situation was one of the major issues Jason had with the band at the time. Hetfield wasn't happy with him pursuing other projects outside of Metallica but then wouldn't let him write for them either. Not to decry James' and Lars' writing prowess, mind. James even said that he was sad that Jason had quit when he did, as a team writing effort on St Anger was one of the things that brought the band back together.
 16.

This is fantastic. Why have I never heard of this band before?
 17. Thunderbirds are usually a recipe for disaster, with their awful tone.
 18. I sometimes wonder, if I had picked a guitar instead of a bass, would I be as good as Shawn Lane now? The answer is probably 'no' so I am quite content where I am.
 19.
If you want to play that many strings, you should play a sitar or a harp. Anyway, you don't need more than X strings to play the money notes anyways.
Ah, those are the sorts of quips I remember being aimed at 6 string basses all those years ago.
 20. It's been a while since I even played a bass that was crap, yet casting my mind back, I can see a few Precision basses in the hazy past. The worst bass I've owned? Not sure. Possibly a Fender Urge Standard bass. 32" scale active jazz bass with a poplar body. I only owned it for a week or so. I just couldn't get a good sound out of it unless all the controls were maxed out. Which was obviously utterly useless. It played well enough though. It ended up for sale again a couple of years later with some decent electronics in it, so someone obviously got some use out of it!
 21.
You'd be surprised me matey...
It probably wouldn't surprise me if I were auditioning for a pub rock band, but I thought most the civilised world had moved on to knocking 11 string basses now? It hardly seems that a 6 string is even considered an ERB anymore.
 22. Is there anyone these days who wouldn't accept that a high C string can be useful for some players? I thought that sort of attitude died out in the early 2000's.
 23.
I use a Pandora and Sennheiser HD 415 mk1 headphones. Job done. Better bandwidth, response.... In fact, everything, than an amp/cab in a domestic environment. And you can plug an external source into it. As mine uses batteries, it's viable in a power cut/ your garden/work canteen and so on! Downside? More finger/ string noise until you learn to tame it. That, and the sudden re-appearance of room- induced sonic artifacts like reverb and various resonances.
So, this Pandora thing, can I just have that on it's own with some good headphones? I won't need to have my amp downstairs at all? I could just keep the amp for playing live or trips to the studio etc etc...?
