Well, I was sent a link to a special priority early ticket sale thing for Rush tickets that opened at 2pm this afternoon. The link went live at 13.58, I went onto it & already the only seats available were sh*tty ones right at the back. How does this happen? I bet if I go onto Ebay now it will be full of great tickets at ludicrous prices. It really pisses me off.
Indeed. Though the first time I went to see Rush I rang the venue at 9AM when the fanclub tickets went on sale. I wasn't in the club but they had a code required to buy a ticket early. As I recall, it was all over the internet so I rang the venue expecting to be asked to produce the code. I wasn't, and got a ticket near the front with ease.
Damn, I'm an only child! Anyway, slightly off topic, best thing would be to be able to memorise each song and do away with the pages altogether - which I'm totally unable to do! I'm a reader through and through, whether it's notation, or simple chord charts, or even scribbled letters such as A, Bb etc. I loathe tablature, though. Does anyone agree with my pianist friend who believes that musicians are divided into readers and memorisers, and you're either one or the other, but very rarely both?
I tend to be a memoriser. My reading skills aren't fantastic but then I rarely play in situations where I need to exercise them so I have no real desire to improve them. If I am reading, like I do at some jazz fusion shows, I tend to just have a chord chart to hand which I'll use to follow the progression and I'll work off that. As for the issue of turning pages, just get an iPad and turn pages with the sweep of a finger!

I think you misunderstand me. I am certainly not saying Rush shows are only attended by long haired rockers. Certainly, those aforementioned long haired rockers are more 'prog spod' than 'Hell's Angel'. I go to Rush shows and to look at me, you'd be hard pressed to guess what kind of music I enjoy yet I would consider Rush my favourite band. No, the point I was making is that whenever you go to a Rush show there are always typical 'rocker' types who go mental for Limelight, Tom Sawyer and Passage to Bangkok, yet don't really seem that interested in anything else Rush do and that they might find a rendition of the entire Signals record to be a bit dull. More to the point, I find them a little out of touch with Rush as a whole because they are mad about the 35 year old prog rock tunes but considered Permanent Waves to be the swansong of the band. In relation to that, a friend of mine went to highschool in the late 70's/early 80's and remembers a time when all the rock kids, who wore denim jackets and had long hair, were mad about Rush. Then Signals came out and they all lost interest. It heralded a new era for the band and attracted a new type of listener. I suppose the pertinent point in my musings here is that the old-skool prog rocker fans never really grew with the band, which is ironic given that many of them attach such worth to the 'progressive' leanings of early Rush efforts.
Even if they did all of Signals (which was rumoured at one point) I couldn't justify those prices.
As cool as this would be, I'm not sure it would be wildly popular with the paying audience. Rush shows are attended by a lot of long haired leather jacket wearers who think Rush disbanded in 1980. I'd love to see all of Signals live though.

That was fantastic. What a right hand technique he has! Lovely sounding Drozd too.

Not really in the same ballpark IMO. The Streamline has quite a typical Status sound to it, as much a product of the electrics as the design. The Steinberger on the other hand sounds quite different. Not as different as say, a Streamline and a P bass, but enough so that most musicians would be able to tell the difference.

I see they're not coming to Newcastle. At least that gets me out of the dilemma of having to decide whether or not to go. I've seen them twice now at £50 a ticket on the past two tours and whilst they were great, I am not sure it's worth me paying that to hear Limelight again, As much as I love them, I'd probably give it a miss this time around.

Well John, I'm not sure of the weight but I believe it to be somewhere around 8 pounds. When I pick up my Streamer afterwards, the streamer feels noticeably heavier and the neck a little more divey. Mind you, I still find the Streamer very manageable. The weight of the ACG is surprising, especially for a singlecut. Ideally I'm after a Yamaha TRB or a Thumb. A straight sale would be useful but in terms of the all the money changing hands over my house at the moment £1000 is not a great deal. It's not going to be the difference between me moving in one week and the next, say, so I'd rather keep that money tied up in a nice bass. Something I can hang on the wall when I've moved! I would be open to any trade offers though, I'd give consideration to any item. Give me a PM about the Warwick and Spectors, John!

Got an ACG? got a webcam? I've got a favour to ask...

That sounds very cool, Michael Manring would approve of this piccolo/tuner twiddling stuff! -
I've heard that NT models have much more "growl" and a better response on the low-mid frequencies...don't know if it's true...but I'd like this very much....but NT was too much expensive for me!
I have always found the NT to have a slightly more 'full' lower end tone, bolstered by a slightly stronger low mid presence. But I personally find the BO model 'cuts' a bit more because it has a stronger high mid presence and a slightly punchier sound that the NT model. So overall, it sounds a bit more 'middy'. For me the advantages of the NT model are feel in the neck and a slightly better body shape (NT thumbs are little more 'squashed', compare the two!)
Awesomeness starts @ 3:30...
I've often thought punk music was so bad it must have been a big joke to a select few, laughing at everyone getting swept up in it. But good grief, this really shows how low punk would go. The time keeping in that solo was terrible. I know punk musicians generally pride themselves on not being able to play a tune to save their life because it 'f***s the system' but that was genuinely cringeworthy.

Personally, no, I've never found that to be true other than when the pickups are in need a balance! Now, if he was saying 'I find that some Musicman basses have really loud E and A strings and quiet/flat D and G stings' then I'd be agreeing.
Anyone notice how high his action is for that kind of thing? Steel fingers that lad.
I suppose that allows him to get those muted 'click' ghost notes out cleanly.
Yeah, very good and all that. I can see that he is indeed quite skilled at doing wot he is doing .... but it's not bass playing to me. Give me Lynott, Foxton, Sting, Geddy, Lemmy and JJ.
So what you're saying is you like rock music. That's cool, but the 'is this bass playing' argument is as old as the f***ing hills. Nice little solo there, he's a very skilled player no doubt. Can't write a tune to save his life, if his albums are anything to go by. They bore me to tears. Aphex Twin on the other hand...

I used to have a Thumb BO 4 string. It was a great bass. My limited edition 1990 Streamer is better but the Thumb was a cool bass. I would have another one, but an NT this time.

I quite like this amp just for the decoration it provides. It has the Level 42 'Princess' logo on it! Re: the ACG, I may take an offer slightly below asking as there is a potential 6'er on the cars atm. If it doesn't sell, I have a gentleman on the continent refurbishing a Warwick Thumb which we have arranged a trade for and it will likely go there. So it won't be here forever. But if I get the Thumb, what will happen to my Streamer?

Tony Butler Signature Bass - Vintage V4MTB
Chris2112 replied to TransistorBassMan's topic in Bass Guitars
Wasn't the Mayfair where The Gate is now? People used to bang on and on about that place but I can't remember it at all. -

It's a neck constructed of multiple laminates of rock maple (32 or 36 IIRC) capped with an ebony fingerboard. Phil Kubicki did this as a way of getting a super strong, lightweight neck without having to resort to expensive carbon fibre components (when this bass was designed in the mid 80's carbon fibre components were still the preserve of aerospace companies for the most part).
