1. I bet that colour stands out on stage!
2. Yes, they are incredible. One day I'll probably buy another. If I could bear to sell my Streamer I'd order another tomorrow.
3.
People comment on how slim the Fender Jazz neck is on the Geddy Lee model. The original got that way after his judicious use of sandpaper, as I understand.
Indeed. In fact, I recall there was a batch of early Geddy Lee models that were known for having faulty necks, shaved so thin they warped at the drop of a hat.
4. I love these Sukop basses. They're so well spoken of on Talkbass, and yet never really make it to these shores. A shame.
5. Sometimes I'll have a couple of weeks off playing a bass, and then go back to it and fall in love with it all over again. This tends to happen with my ACG however much I play it, I can always find a tone that sounds fresh and interesting to my ears and I remember why it's such a great bass. Filter preamps do give that flexibility.
6. Having played a couple of Suhr jazz basses I was surprised to find they were nothing special beyond the fancy top woods. Just another jazz bass, really. Their guitars I did find a little more inspiring, I have to say.
7.
What were you hoping for, a lame copy cover?
No, I was hoping for a great cover. But Depeche Mode might just be un-coverable, a bit like Rush.
8.
I suppose it very similar to the Flea Bass (which seems to be its replacement, though Modulus still offers this option) but with slight more low end and obviously a far nicer finish.
This is more closely related to the Quantume basses. The Modulus Sonic Hammer was the bass that spawned the Flea Bass and the Funk Unlimited.
9.
The texture of the grain really is lovely... Sadly I sold its fretted bookmatched pair about 10 years ago... can be seen in action here:- Please no comments on the quality of the miming or the chewing!!
My main question is, who the hell was buying these guy's records?
10. Any Level 42 fan will enjoy this deliciously crisp slice of 80's synth... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=216WHfHbscg
11. Warwicks are very good for this. They tend to be quite musical at the top, namely the treble frequencies aren't so bright and zingy as to make soloing and chording sound vulgar. Just as important as upper fret access is an even quality of tone, where the highs are just as present and musical as the low notes. For this, Status are also excellent, their basses have a very fine, even response with great definition on the higher notes. On the other hand, most Fenders are not much use for this, nor are Musicman Stingrays. They suffer not only from a limited number of frets, but their blocky heels get in the way of the hand, the access around the cutaway can be poor and they often suffer from uneven tones, favouring boomy low notes over sweet, crisp mids and highs. YMMV.
12.
pearl tuners?
Always one of my favourite things, aesthetically, about the second generation of Patitucci TRB's. That said, I'd hate to knock one, I'm sure it would break them and it would be a faff trying to source another one from Yamaha!
13. The sad thing is, at £1000 they could make the same bass and I bet they'd sell plenty. It would appeal to a market of players who want 6 string range but struggle with playing a normal 6 string. This offers them something very manageable with it's narrow string spacing. Get the right hand used to the spacing and it would surely be a breeze to play. As it is, it's just a very very expensive collector's item. It doesn't even look like £5000's worth of bass, what a shame. Here is Veasley getting some decent sounds out of a custom shop Ibanez SR 6 string, anyway... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pHsEoNSkso
14. Not really my thing, but Howard's work is quality, that much can be said. I still walk past the old Bass Place now and think Newcastle needs somewhere like that again. Dingy and dark, but without the clouds of smoke, preferably!
15. For whatever reason I'd rather just play a 4 string day to day and get a 6 string out when I need the extra low end range or when I will be seriously soloing or comping with chords. That said, I've owned some really nice 5 strings too, particularly my Alembic Epic fretless.
16. Alder body, three piece neck...! Only £5500! Crazy. Mind you, Veasley has been slogging away on Ibanez SR 6 strings since they first came out, so I expect they felt it was time to indulge him. But this is even sillier than when the Gary Willis bass went 'boutique'. I have to say, sadly, that the Veasley bass doesn't even sound that great in the video. The SR3006 was much better, bring that back!
17.
Surely that is Jeff Berlin.
No, he worships at the altar of Butler's chorus use.
18. I always wonder where this 'Mach' business started. It wasn't Wal that started it, and most people use 'mk (mark) I, II or III'.
19. What a shame, he built some fantastic basses. I may still decide to track one down, some day.
20. How come it has only been played a handful of times despite being a new order?
21.
I must say I've only actually ever heard of Hellborg for the fact that he has his own line of bass amplification that costs a bomb and looks like some kind of posh kitchen appliance.
Must try harder. Especially for his stuff with Shawn Lane.
