1. It just sounds like some very naff Return To Forever offcuts. The tripe they jam out but would never dream of putting near their albums. Too many hoary old key sounds, and a sort of naff faux-retro vibe. His tone is awful too. No, I don't really think much of this at all, and as a big RTF and fusion fan it pains me to say that. I would love for fusion to be re-invigorated and for some great players to really get active and refresh that genre. Sadly, I think it's cheesy rubbish like this that has done the genre in, because it was essentially watered down rubbish like this that spoiled things the first time around. Some of it also has a bit of a Level 42 flavour, as if Mike Lindup said one day at an early 80's soundcheck "hey guys, lets play some tuneless rubbish. Mark, you can do what you want but make sure you keep it meandering and aimless. If by chance an original sounding lick pops into your head, store it but don't play it here". What a load of dross.
2. He's a seriously talented player. Always used to stop and say hello when I worked in Newcastle. Back when I had my Alembic bass, and he was always asking me for a go of it! He's got a huge selection of his own homemade drum and bass style jams, he's a very talented player with a great sense of time and groove. Grew up in Manchester in the 70's, so always found it a bit odd when the police stood and watched him play, so he said. Nice bloke.
3.
Here's my current set: (L-R) Spector Euro 4, Stingray, Status Series 2, Warwick Thumb (1990 NT), Overwater Aspiration 5 Deluxe. Currently using the Status (main bass) and Stingray for gigging although the Overwater may make an appearance soon (I've only recently picked up this one).
Love the Status and the Thumb! Very nice!
4.
In rehearsals last week:
Good grief, that was awful. I love Depeche Mode but this was not the 'Blasphemous Rumours' I was expecting or hoping for. Mike, the funky new tune above this post is great. The Sei sounds nice as ever.
5. Always enjoyed his videos, I hope he likes the new bass.
6.
I would always go for an ash body but then I am a Warwick afficianado and there basses generally are ash bodied.
No they're not. Well, not unless you're looking at the cheaper models. The top end Warwicks tend to have bodies of maple, bubinga or Afzelia. But not ash, generally speaking.
7. To the studio, I'll just take one bass if I know it's going to the be the right one for the job. Live, I try to take a backup. I've never had a bass go wrong at a gig, but I'd like a backup incase the worst happens. Or if I just fancy a different bass for a few songs.
8. I'd love to try one, I'm sure they're superb. But if I were set on owning a Fodera, I suspect I'd rather just have a plain Monarch with the dovetail neck.
9.
Oh God no! I think what they're doing now, and have been since "Counterparts", is to try & distance themselves from all that over arranged, over orchestrated lame AOR they were producing on albums like "Hold Your Fire" & "Presto", and I for one am very glad that they are. I don't even own a copy of "Hold Your Fire" anymore - I binned it as I just think it's awful.
If Rush have ever made lame AOR it is definitely post Counterparts. So many dreary songs, A/B/A style compositions. Some of it has been, I am sad to say, dreadful. Really bland album rock. They need to get back to the Power Windows/Hold Your Fireway of thinking, ie: beautifully arranged songs, catchy melodies and albums so strong any song could be the lead single.
10. Jazz bass, new strings, tube amp in overdrive. Job done.
11.
Richard may by doing half the gig with it. . . . perhaps! Cheers.
Before leaving on a stretcher!
12. Very nice. I quite like Overwater basses (though generally, they are not for me, at least not enough to make me want to buy one).
13. In reference to an earlier point, I liked Snakes and Arrows a lot more than I thought I might, though I didn't like it as much as I had hoped I might. Songs like Workin' Them Angels are just fantastic, and 'Hope' is one of my favourite solo pieces of all time. Compare Snakes and Arrows to some of the rubbish they have made like Counterparts and you'll soon realise it's a pretty good record. At least there, they have something to say whereas Counterparts was mostly drossy, naff rock. I think what Rush really need to get back to is great melodies. They need to sit and listen to Hold Your Fire over and over again and really get into those songs, and appreciate the arrangements where every instrument is producing a melody, making a catchy noise and adding to the song. I feel for the past few years they've just thought "lets crank up the gain and thrash something out and see what happens". They need to get back to arranging things, as the stock rock song format for them has become a little tired. They make great rock albums but I firmly believe from the glimmers of brilliance on Snakes and Arrows that they are capable of so much more than just being a great rock band. They've done it in the past.
14.
Iv always been told the Tone Pumps are useless ? Each to their own I guess. Very good basses though, yeah. Cheers BUMP
Nope, you've been misinformed. The Tone Pump is an awesome preamp. There was a trend called the 'Tonedump' a little while ago where people were replacing these preamps, however that seems to have died off as people have come to their senses and realised how good the Tonepump is.
15. Seriously nice sounding bass. And a very different tone to my ACG, which is interesting! Mind you, mind is mahogany bodied, maple necked and with big humbuckers so it's more of a Wal sound, rather than this tweaked 'super jazz' sound!
16. So tempted by this...fancy a nice 5 string and another Epic wouldn't go amiss!
17. I don't agree that our sound, as bassists, is too over-processed. In most music, the bass tone is a complete afterthought which is often why it sounds piss poor. Mind you, I do like hearing my basses as opposed to an EQ or an amp. I tend to leave my amp set flat and my bass EQ set flat. If I need to adjust the EQ for compensate for a particular room or venue, I will, but only making minor adjustments. I am not one to go for layers of effects or distortion, just a nice bass tone.
18. Yep, the colour and grain pattern suggests walnut to me.
19.
I like my warwick. want to put new pickups in it I think. What will as streamer stage 1 sound like with nordies?
What has it got in now?
20.
And good news for those of us who don't, as they are all safely incarcerated at Bass Direct.
Probably good news for most. I call them 'Fender Frighteners', because while a good Warwick isn't too difficult to get hold of, it will knock some run of the mill tat bass like a Fender into a cocked hat with little effort!
21. I'd love to sit and have a bit of a ditty on one for a few minutes, just to see what it was like.
