I suppose it all depends on the inidividual bass. A Sei will likely be as good as any, but at the end of the day you may struggle to escape the fact it's just a fancy jazz bass.

Car derived vans do carry a premium because of their association with 'white van man' business use. They can often end up more expensive than they should be on SD+P, possibly because insurers expect them to be used for business use without declaration. You'd be better off getting an estate if thats the sort of thing you're after. They usually aren't as dismal as CDV's. All the same, weigh up your choice to switch to diesel carefully. Unless you're really doing the big miles, you probably won't see a huge saving. More expensive to buy, high fuel cost, expensive bills when they go wrong, worse to drive...not much going for them, in the long run!

Traded my Zon Sonus to John for a Warwick Streamer of his yesterday. A real gent with great taste in basses, and quite happy to let me have a go on a few to see what they're like! He has also offered to adjust my Streamer in future if it needs a tweak as it settles down. Top stuff, would recommend him to any Basschatter thinking of doing a deal.

I've never played one before but I've spoken to Stuart about them. He has played Washburn acoustic basses for well over a decade now and has always liked them. I think he's really made up with this one, it sounds great in the video too! It wasactually through his acoustic bass that Washburn offered him an electric singature bass.

Thanks to everyone who has looked at this. I've tried to reply to everyone who has PM'ed me, so my apologies if I have missed anyone and not wrote back to you personally. I'm going to see a gentleman who really knows his Warwicks this lunchtime, so I will update the thread with the outcome of that trip.
A Zon for a Warwick ??????????
Possibly. I'm hopefully going to be looking at one which will hopefully be as good as the pictures suggest! I wouldn't trade it for anything less than a top notch Warwick though. And at this level of basses, they're generally all as good as each other, they just do things a little differently to one another. And when I consider what I paid for the Zon, and what a good Warwick costs it seems about right, even if another Zon would be much harder to find. Ultimately, I love new basses and new toys, and my #1 will always be my ACG - hence why other basses come up for trade and go through the revolving doors!

Pandering to my usual GAS and the bottle of KEO Beer I have consumed, I quite fancy a Warwick Thumb NT. Ideally I'd be after a 4 string but I may consider something with more strings (but not less). Fretted or fretless is not a great concern, as long as it's a good Thumb with plenty of growl! Following my usual 'one in, one out and don't get rid of the ACG' rule, I can only offer my beautiful Zon Sonus bass for trade. It has Bartolini singlecoil pickups and a Zon Polyfusion preamp, a bubinga top and an ash body and a Zon carbon fibre neck. It is very light, it plays beautifully and it sounds great. It comes with a Zon hardcase, and I would be willing to post anywhere in the UK. I will insure the shipping as long as the other involved party does the same for their bass. I'm still stockpiling money for a winter car (if I need one) so purchasing a Thumb outright is not an option right now. Rush - Time Machine Tour Blu Ray / DVD / CD
Chris2112 replied to wateroftyne's topic in General Discussion
Yes, between Counterparts and Test For Echo they seemed a bit lost. Hardly surprising really, in the musical swamp that was the 1990's. The technical, poppy songs they'd done for the late 80's didn't suit mass market tastes anymore, and Presto and RTB had slowly re-focused their rock edge. But they seemed a bit aimless, doing simple rock songs and hiding a great 'Rush' track on each album. Vapor Trails really brought them back, when they had to say "if we want to do this, then lets do this". -
Yes, I believe so, the JD Thumb bass.
Vic Wooten Fodera for me - quite partial to the buckeye top models: if only they sold one that looked like Vic's original:
That is just stunning. I love the fact that over the years, Victor has only had the very most basic and remedial of work carried out on it. Vinnie always offers to refinish it for him, and he refuses!

Squier Classic Vibe Range - Which to choose?!
Chris2112 replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
the one I played wasn't , they are certainly different takes on Fender Jazz's, but a CVJ better than a VMJ better.... I wouldn't say so, they are both very good for the money.
Oh well, you must have found a right old duffer. I had a Squier VM Fretless, which was a pretty good bass. I played some of the VM fretteds but wasn't too blown away by them. The Classic Vibe jazzes have been really good though. The bridge alone makes it worth the premium over the VM, the brass item is so much better than those dodgy bent bits of tin. -
Were you at Newcastle on the TM tour? Where I was, it was so boomy as to be almost unlistenable. I mentioned this to friends who were there who said the spund was spot-on where they were. I must have been in the middlle of a standing wave or something.
I was. You could well have been in a standing wave. As I say, the sound quality was noticeably worse than the first time I saw them there, but not so much that it was unlistenable, at least where I was stood, which was further back than the first time. -

The same line at 1.56 sounds pretty good to me but this is in the studio where it works well. Why not just lift the strap, you daft twat.
I really like signature basses for some reason (even of players who i can't stand or bands i don't like so nothing to do with band love!) What's bad is people who play them just to copy people they idolise, using it in your own way to sound like youre self is fine!
For years when I had my Kubicki Ex Factor I used to plug it in and get that awesome Stuart Hamm tone. People used to say 'why are you so obsessed with having his tone? Why not get your own?'. It just so happened that 'his' tone was incredible, and it worked really well for me. Why settle for less, just because I heard it somewhere else first?

Squier Classic Vibe Range - Which to choose?!
Chris2112 replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
I've had two of the Classic Vibe Jazz basses in white. Beautiful instruments for the money they cost, really superb budget basses. I have absolutely no need for them, so I sold them both but they were great. They are head and shoulders above the Vintage Modified stuff. -
I hope he is back playing his Ken Smith basses as soon as possible! Glad to hear he's getting better.

Whilst 'God' doesn't do much for me, I do find it inspiring that Victor incorporates such a thing into his music. He breathes his passion for life into his music. I have never seen him 'jobbing it', he always looks as though he lives for music and nothing pleases him more than to be playing his bass. He inspires me with just his philosophy on music and playing. His music on the other hand, I mostly enjoy immensely. I love his fusion stuff, though some of his solo stuff is a bit Gospel-y and not really my thing. All the same, he is one of the best musicians alive today and easily the most revolutionary bassist since Jaco. It's not just his technical mastery that makes him a great, it's his ability to just make a damn good tune, however he chooses to do it.

Stew is a great player. Some of the Talkbass crowd bought him a Conklin bass a few years ago, quite simply one of the most sublime basses I've ever seen. I'm not a fan of slapping on a fretless bass though, I think Bakithi Kumalo is the only bassist I've heard doing it and thought 'wow, that sounds great'.
-
I'll usually play a solo like Continuum. Your playing has to really have some depth to it if you're playing solo and looking to make an impression, so just playing something fast unaccompanied probably won't cut it. For the easily impressed though, a good old fashioned slap solo in E usually impresses, especially with plenty of hammer on and ghost notes!

Rush - Time Machine Tour Blu Ray / DVD / CD
Chris2112 replied to wateroftyne's topic in General Discussion
Hmm, I'll see if I can find some samples. I have to say, I saw them on the Snakes and Arrows tour and the sound was fantastic, at the same venue on the Time Machine tour the bass was a little mushier and it sounded a little bit boomy. Still a great show though, I really enjoyed it. Realistically though, we'll never see Rush playing small venues with masterfully scultped sound again.
