I love the way dual split P pickups look on a bass, but what are the tonal advantages/differences of having a split P at the bridge? Not exactly the most common set up so haven't ever played one and interested to see what people think of it

Hi Mark, You can argue about which is better until you are blue in the face really. In short: Yamaha = Great value for money, great build quality with a more 'modern' sound. Squier = Generally good value for money, anything above their Affinity series is well respected and even then, the Affinity series is not a bad place to start, Squier will give you a more classic sound from the start. As with any new gear, if you can try before you buy it always helps Best of luck in choosing your new bass

Don't have one so can't say for definite, but I'd be surprised if these had filler etc. Might not necessarily be the prettiest grain or 1 piece of wood but these basses are mass produced so should be in a decent state underneath. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable comes along and can be more help
I think there is WAY more to it than just his bass playing, which is obviously part of his sound, but shouldn't be the complete focus. He is writing very unique music and singing at the same time, and I had heard of him and seen his record covers WAY before I knew he was a great bass player. Cool guy, cool groove, very unique and fresh.
This is why I like him, a guy creating something new with a 6 string semi-hollow Ibanez. I get that it's not to everyone's taste but that the fun of music. It's similar to what older musicians did in the 70's experimenting with synths and new sounds for example I'm sure there are people here who can't stand Prog Rock? There will always be space for the Old School and classics, but it's good to have some new ideas to change it up

Here's his live set from the 6 Music Festival the other month. He makes it looks so easy doesn't he.... http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p04wv4f5/the-6-music-festival-thundercat

Interested to see how you think the Aurora are. The Arkay are ok, think I might have to order a set of the Aurora to see how they compare. I'm not disappointed by the Arkay but maybe the Aurora should be slightly better

Odd title I know. Stumbled across this on a Facebook ad. (congrats. targeted ads) Seems like it's a Gumtree style rental service. Does loads of stuff but particularly interested around the Music gear hiring. Rather than standard fare from gear rental services you might be able to get something more interesting out of this. It is a massive risk I guess giving away your gear to a stranger but they say everything is fully insured. https://fatlama.com/about I like the concept as some of us may have too much gear that isn't being used but don't want to sell so could make some money rather than hanging on a wall/in a case. What do you guys think? Good idea? Load of bollocks?

Aerodyne jazz pros and cons. Let me know please.
BassApprentice replied to julesb's topic in General Discussion
FWIW, There is a blue Aerodyne Jazz in my local music shop. Never seen it in blue but it is stunning. See here: http://www.kennysmusic.co.uk/fender-fsr-aerodyne-jazz-bass-lake-placid-blue-pre-owned I remember lusting after one when Duff McKagan started using them in Velvet Revolver. -
Crack Converters Pitsea Yamaha BB1100S £250?
BassApprentice replied to Paul S's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Quite interesting to see Crack Convertors put such a reasonable price on a bass. I pop into my local one regularly and find they price pretty close to any other shop with only obscure stuff being a decent bargain. If someone does buy that you can almost guarantee you could get your money back if you sold it on. Guess being able to google it and find a price rather than having to know anything about it makes it easy -
Morning, These are very highly regarded around these parts: https://www.thomann....scale_ebass.htm especially if you plan on changing the pickups. Have a look around the build diaries section, I'm sure there's someone who has modded 2 or 3 of these with great results. EDIT: Found one of the threads http://basschat.co.uk/topic/253875-turning-a-harley-benton-pb-shorty-into-a-jb-shorty/page__st__60__p__2902269__hl__harley%20benton__fromsearch__1#entry2902269 Another option is an Ibanez Talman
So I'd end up with something like this:
Interesting...Could that be done with a 3D printer?

As ridiculous as it may look, you could try crafting a thumbrest out of cheap P pickup cover, since you mentioned you like the position of having your thumb resting on screw 'ear' of the pickup.... Not using the whole pickup cover but just the top bit, so it's secured to your bass by the normal screw hole of the pickup cover. Could look awful though

I love Doug's playing....but I can never help thinking the guitar solo in Cult of Personality is complete overkill.... Great song otherwise.

If you're not sure that a 45 G is working for you, Newtone might be a good shout as they do custom gauges so you could up it slightly if you want. They might be a bit more than you're wanting to spend mind.
Don't rule out the TC Electronic BG250 combos. These are available with either 1x15, 1x12, 2x10 or 2x8 speakers. I have the 208 or 2x8 and its a fantastic little combo that works great for rehearsing and could easily gig with PA support.
I've seen good things about them too, especially the SpectraComp Tone print settings. Will need to try and find somewhere with both to A/B them
Get a small decent combo when downsizing?
I think that's what I'm looking at doing now...probably a Fender Rumble at some point as they seem to get glowing reviews Thanks for the advice all!
