Here are my amps, you can just see a Fender Bassman 135 with 1x15 cab sneaking into pic - that gets used for bass or very loud guitar. Mostly I gig with the 1x12 MusicMan combo, sometimes with the Fender 1x15 underneath it. The amp I use most of all is the little '57 Fender Champ clone by Caiman Agnew (boutique amp maker in Dublin); it's perfect for home use and recording. The Blues junior is usually used for rehearsals as it's a lot lighter and quieter than the MusicMan. I am into the tonal ideas that came from the genius of Mr Leo Fender. The fact that he considered the amp to be part of the instrument and therefore built both says it all - nobody else really seems to have nailed that idea.

generally speaking WMs don't like active signals; so that might be part of the problem.....

i had the 100w 1x15 combo, bought it new for £350 on Denmark St in London in about '85; sold it in about '95 in Nottingham for £150 and still regret letting it go a bit, but not a lot. It had nice tones, but tended to hiss; which was not really a problem live, but no good for recording. It was loud enough live, just. I think I remember having the same problem with occasional cut-outs of power and it went through fuses a bit too. Good for home use at £40, I reckon.

might be worth trying a Caymin Agnew guitar he is a builder in Dublin and makes some amazing small tube amp clones of old Fenders for stupidly low prices and extremely high quality; so maybe his guitars are the same.
Catalinbread SFT.....Wins for me!
this is absolutely the ballsey valvey grindy pedal to have IMO, especially when you run it at 18v; then it kick ass even more with plenty more headroom. It works great for guitar too. the only thing that i've found that tops it on guitar is a Butler Tube Driver with the bias adjustment control http://www.butleraudio.com/ I haven't tried the Butler on bass yet tho.......I've gone AWOL from bass for a while and am playing 6 strings more than 4 these days.....sorry!
if its a separate head and speaker your after in your budget i would go for an early Hartke model. I had one for 15 years done over a 1000 gigs and it never let me down. Infact i've still got it as my back up amp.A great little work horse that create a decent sound that is powerful. The model i have is a Hartke 2000ha.
I couldn't agree more. I use an old Hartke 3500 as back up head; it produces some very nice sounds and has plenty of power for any situation. Amazing value for money these days and they are bomb-proof. The 3500 is probably way more powerful than most people need though. You would probably get better sounds at low volume out of a Hartke 2000 as well
Good advice, I`ve found 300 is about right. I`ve had 500 watt rigs, and never used them anywhere near full power, so 300 is fine for me.
300w does sound about right for the sort of gigs most of us do (50-200 people) and you would go through PA for bigger gigs anyway; so your 300w would still be fine for on-stage sound. Only thing I would say is be careful what kind of 300w you have. I have found that 300w of one rig can be very different from 300w of another rig and the number of watts does not necessarily correspond to how loud your rig can go. I do know that speaker impedance will affect loudness, as will speaker cab design and where you position your speaker and whether you are playing indoors or outdoors. Also 300w of all-valve amplification is juggernaut levels of power compared to 300w of solid-state amplification. I hope this helps and that someone more knowledgeable than me can explain some of this better.

a friend of mine had this problem with his USA Tele and swapped the saddles out for some graphite ones that have cured the problem. I think it cost him £35, which was quickly cheaper than replacing stings every time he played.

Hi Kiwi here's a link to retailer in London; but you would probably be better going direct to maker http://www.vintagean...012-Tweed-11851 Caimin's direct contact details are below / Phone 0044-851428655 (this is available on web; so should be OK to publish here) he builds these amps by hand; so they are not always in stock, hence the high price for that one that just went on eBay. PS. fine set of interests you have there, old fruit! tally ho, up the empire, wot, wot!!

update.....i got one of these recently for £120 off eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320918708232?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648 Holy crappola - this thing smokes. With a 12ax7 in it it is very feisty indeed; stick a 12ay7 in it and it cleans up lovely to sound like a big Fender at manageable levels for home use. You can buy them directly from maker Caiman Agnew in Dublin and request tube specifications you want.
My pleasure mate Betty Davis was an interesting 'character', worth diggin' around on the interweb for some biog, she was Miles Davis' wife, introduced him to Sly Stone and Jimi Hendrix, shortly after which Miles went on down the route to Bitches Brew, she was also on the cover of Filles De Kilimanjaro. Waaaaayyyy ahead of her time wrt her openness about her sexuality and her explicit lyrics (very tame by todays standards, but back then - ouch she was just too hot!). There are about 3 albums out and the one with that on is the best really, the next one didnt have the all star band, its still great, but not quite as great.... Eventually she became a full on recluse when she couldnt get a record released for love nor money. Someone finally tracked her down a few years ago (by tracing tax returns of all things) and talked her into letting them re-release her 3 albums. She was oed several 10s of thousands of dollars in royalties at the time which hadn't been paid as she couldn't be found.... I had only ever heard Nasty Girl before finding this stuff out, and thats way more shouty, and not as good as Anti-Love Song for it.
Here's a little story about da funk.... I once interviewed Eddie Henderson (juzz fusion trumpet virtuoso and Headhunters associate) for my dissertation at college on Jazz Fusion. I asked him what influence he thought Sly and Jimi had on Miles? He said....'Man, it weren't about the music,...they were all funkin' each other!' And while we're on subject of groove, here's my favourite rhythm section from The Headhunters http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFcpBB4Yy_M http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXuQ9OJw4l4 I reckon Paul Jackson and Mike Clarke are two fo the grooviest cats on the planet.
