yup, i would never part with mine either. it is such a high quality and reliable head - one of the best kep secrets about I reckon. works great with some nice effects too, it keeps everything clear and sweet. I drive it with a Catalinbread SFT to transform it into a snarling, punching beast when required - looking to run the SFT on 18v soon too, which should make my Bassman 135 capable of crushing all before it. What cabs are you running yours into?
Apologies. Really I should stay faithful to my Jaydee, but currently I wouldn't be without my 1979 Stingray. (Pic from previous owner, now has black scratchplate and generally shinier).
+1 i went for my 79 MM Ray too

if i didn't already have a good covering of fuzz n dirt with ZVex Wooly Mammoth and Catalinbread SFT and EHX BassBalls, I would be seriously tempted by Pickle Pie B as an out and out Muff type distortion.

Someone was asking what a Wunkay is...it's a G&L 1000 - nice bass alot like a cross between a Precision and a MM, made by the fair hand of Leo too. As for this thread....Gadzooks this is a tough one to call. It's out of 79 MM, 63 P, 89 G&L Asat and 08 Sandberg California JM4 Supreme, acquired in that order. I love them all though and for different reasons. I've owned the MM since 84 and played it the most; all the wear is my own. So I guess it would probably be that one.

yeah, I heard Bono had to cancel cos he damaged his ego. No chance they would've put something that size back together in time! while were in this area......what is so great about Muse and Chris too-many-basses Wotsit? To my ears, Muse are actually really uninteresting and not remotely doing anything new or different. New material sounds like sub-U2 stadium rock. I thought we got done with all that in the 80s. Early old material seems OK to me; but nothing outstanding. I just don't get it with Muse and I have tried. Please help me understand. Ta and no offence to all you Muse fans - respect and all that.

oh yes this pedal is the business - i've had mine for over a year now and love it to pieces. it i so useable and well funky. It has an fx loop too. So you can really embed other effects in the filetered signal, rather than after or before; which often sounds a bit too spikey to me. still love my EHX Bass Balls tho and the Qtron is still a class act. But if i could only take one, it would be the Groove Regulator - it offers more tasty filter sounds than any other filter i've tried.
Combine the best of both worlds and get a Sandberg JM. MM style pickup in the bridge, and a J where it should be. Well made and sound great.
+1 re Sandberg Cali JM4 - this is what mine's like, follow link: http://www.sandberg-guitars.de/basscat-ove...es/caljmsupreme It's not just an MM pup at the bridge tho - it's even better; you can flick the switch and the MM humbucker flips to a 4 pole single coil pup, i.e. a J pup. Also you can go active or passive. This is truly a far better Fender J than a Fender J....and I am not biassed, I am a Fender addict; but this Sandbdrg really is better than any Fender I've ever played, including pre CBS Ps and Js.
Yeah I've seen the ASATs before but I've never liked the look of them. Even without the humungous dugong-like upper bout that is the current fashion I think single-cutaway basses don't look right.
think Telecaster body!
This is my pre
nice - not seen a natural pre EB with a white scratch plate another note re preEB Rays......there were bad ones too - a mate of mine has a dreadful '77 that is virtually unusable due to electrics; but i stick to my guns a good preEB is the nuts! another note re preEBs - mine was my main bass from '83 to '09......now I have to go to a chyropractor regualrly for back and neck problems; but whoever said art didn't require a bit of pain and sacrfice
The L-2000 has excellent electronics. Visually they're pretty uninspiring (unless you like boring-looking basses) and they feel like P basses (which is why I don't have one), but there are so many sounds available, if you liked it you probably wouldn't need another solid-body bass.
i agree great electronics on the L2000; but the Asat Bass is very interesting looking - check my avatar for one. it has same pups and electrics as L2000. Very versatile and good sounding all-round Fender sounds with plenty of heat in those pups
All the proper shops have gone now,Anyone remember Musical Exchanges in Birmingham? All them tunnels of cabs with no speakers for peanuts and basses in every shape and brand with prices to match! Brilliant I still like a look in any secondhand shops when around the country just in case they have a 59 Les paul for £50 or a pre EB Stingray marked up as a good Ernie Ball copy for £70! Not found any yet but one day............
absolutely.....what a store. I bought my 63 Precision there about 12 years ago for £1250 and we are talking a complete real '63 PLake Placid Blue P Bass.....here's the evidence.
Yes... had to sell off my '78 Ray last year... got £1300 for it.
that looks exactly like my 79 Ray! IMO pre Ernie Ball is the only real Ray. None and I mean none of the EB Rays I've tried come close to the real deal. So my advice to the OP is forget that £1700 EBMM and get a real one for probably less money! It's only my opinion!!! So appologies to any EB Ray fans.

hartke ha3500 is very nice head - gives warm and snap and has compressor and is relatively cheap. I swapped the 12ax7 tube for a JJ too - much nicer sound. As for cab, I would probably be tempted with some kind of 2x12 with a horn and port.
-
I am using Catalinbread SFT and ZVex Woolly Mammoth on passive bass into old Fender valve amp. Both these dirt pedals sound great in the mix and can be made to cut through even more with a compressor. No dissapearing bottoms insight. So how do I achieve this masterstroke, you may ask.......simples........form a band with no guitards! All of us bass-FX-heads should be allowed this joyous situation at least once in our musical lives.

What are the top 5 (or 10) basses you've owned?
Bassnut62 replied to OutToPlayJazz's topic in Bass Guitars
in no particular order and all still owned: '79 MusicMan Stingray (natural) '63 Precision (lake placid blue) '89 G&L Asat Bass (cherry burst) '08 Sandberg California JM4 Deluxe (black) ones that got away: '74 Precision fretless with extra Jazz pup (mocha brown) '83 Jazz (sunburst) '64 Epiphone EB0 '70s Ibanez Rickky 4001 copy - cool as f##k; but not great to play! -

Poll: Which Fender Jazz would you buy & why?
Bassnut62 replied to OutToPlayJazz's topic in Bass Guitars
I am amazed the vintage pre-CBS option is scoring so low; but then I guess they're not easily available for peops to try. I've only ever played one - a Lake Placid Blue 62 and it was truly out of this world. I would've loved to own it. Having said all that, I recently bought a Sandberg California JM4 Deluxe; whihc is actually a better Fender Jazz than any Fender Jazz I've ever owned or tried, apart possibly from that Pre CBS. -
Definitely. Just done the first set at tonight's function, and I reckon I've just about got the squelch setting about right. Been putting an OC-2 before it in the signal chain, and an ODB-3 in the FX loop. Tasty. I might just have to get another filter, regardless of keeping or selling the Q-tron. The new MXR maybe?
great, glad it's working out for you. fuzz, filter and octave are so irresistible together. My current combination for that is Groove Regulator with ZVex Mastotron in the loop for fuzz and then put the hole lot thru MXR BOD. I am definitely tempted to try that new MXR Filter too. Hope the second set makes it to number 11 on all the dials!
Well, despite ruling out anything by EHX when I started this topic, I have completely and utterly contradicted myself. I decided to go for the Q-Tron+ that jxljxl was selling. It was the effects loop that won me over - I'm gonna put an ODB-3 in there, as I don't use it at all on its own. What I'm really looking forward to is the combination of the Q-Tron with my OC-2! I'm anticipating some synthy, squelchy goodness. Thanks for all the suggestions, by the way. I'll refer back to this thread should I decide the Q-Tron isn't for me, or in the equally likely eventuality that I'll want a second filter on my pedal board. Huw
Congrats, for a first filter I reckon it would be hard to go wrong with that choice. Sure you'll always get your money back on the Q if y9u need/want to too.
I love my SYB-5 and my SYB-3, But its not the same as other synths its basically a "make my bass into a glitchy keyboard" pedal, which i really dig:)
Glad the SYBs work for you. Making glitchy keyboard sounds with it sounds interesting too. When I had mine it frustrated me, as it just didn't track well. Also it didn't give me the more organic blooming bass synth sounds I was after and can dial in very easily with the old EHX MBS.
Can you extend a bit more your thoughts betwen both these Synts, please? I'm thinking in buying a MBS in a near future but never herad the rumor that the old one is better. Thank you
I've heard from numerous sources that the new 9v MBS is poor compared to the old 24v. There's a lot of discussion about this on Talk Bass too. My understanding is that the only plus for the small one is that it is True Bypass, so you don't get any degredation of your signal when the effect is not engaged, which you do get with the old 24v MBS; but it's simple to fix that. I have mine in a bypass loop. The big pros you get with the 24v are: - much more headroom in the scope of the effect's sounds due to more voltage available - much more travel in slider controls and more space between them, all of which makes the pedal more easily tweakable for more precise dialing in of the sound you're after. - big old one is much better put together, whereas the new one feels cheap. - the old one is a stone cold classic, that is bound to become a sort after collector's item eventually IMO Hope that helps
