They used to do a cracking active Jazz Bass style instrument , the BB1500a , but it was discontinued a few years ago now . One of these :
I owned one of these for a little while. Fantastic bass! Only got rid of it in a trade for an 1100s. Needed a more passive sound and the 1500A was very hi-fi sounding. This all being said, it's one I now wish I'd kept. It would've been an excellent candidate for a fretless conversion...
Don't forget, Gary Willis uses a lined fretless neck and he is insanely talented.
Yeah he certainly is. He obviously prefers the lines being there (as do many others I'm sure) A matter of personal preference, as with everything. I really fancy one of those Gary Willis Ibanez basses but it's the lines that put me off :-)

Like yourself, I was very daunted at first and even posted on here about the very same issue. I needn't have worried; the side dots really are enough on an unlined board. If anything, I now find that lines on a fretless are a bit of a hinderance, if that makes sense? I also think that they aesthetically look a bit crap; the lines ruin the look for me. An unlined board gets you using your ears more and helps you play more expressively in my experience. Put the blast shield down and use the force, you won't regret it ;-)

Well, it's a subtle difference. But I think a lot of the zing I'm getting is probably also due to the thru neck on the BB2000. As stated earlier, the E string is really punchy with lots of sustain; don't seem to get any of that wooliness you typically get with E strings on most basses...
D and G strings were off, you could hear it especially well while playing octaves (which I do quite frequently). Classic P layout is perfect for octaves.
Just wondering what you mean by "off"- do you mean out of tune, or just doesn't sound right? I'm playing octaves without any issues at all on my BB2000, but I guess like everything, it's down to individual taste I've had traditional P pickup BB's, such as my old 1100s. A fantastic bass and closer to the traditional P sound for sure, but I just love the extra zing you get from the reverse P pup
sorry my daughters 28 years old and a great bass player but even shes not allowed on my new (to me) BB2000...yet. me and the BB2000 are still in our honeymoon period i have a rule no playing on dads new basses for three months!
I just meant when they give me a chance to get it out and play it! I don't get much time because the little fella is only 2 years old. It's a weird one for me because i've had a BB1200 for a couple of years, so the honeymoon period hasn't really happened. It's like the same bass (even same colour) but with the added J pickup to expand the sound options. But it was the desire for a BB2000 that started the whole BB obsession for me, so now I am well chuffed to finally have one and as I say, can now get on with my life lol - You gotta love that E string, clear as a bell and sustain to die for!! eh, basslondon?

As promised, my newly acquired BB2000, in original Yamaha case. 1983/84 is best guess on the year. In pretty decent nick for a 30 year old bass. One I've been after for quite a while. Now I can get on with my life lol
