I was watching this build unfold whilst lurking in the 'build diaries' section. Really enjoyed seeing it come together. Great work and a fascinating process. When the build was complete, I was both in awe with the finished bass (not to my taste but the quality of work is top class)and gutted that it was complete - I miss the regular updates. I hardly venture into the build diaries section now.
I like these IEM posts... keep them coming. Here's some more from me. C'mon Mr Zed, join the party! Tonyf, where's the SCS funk trunk?
Well, I won't be able to compete with the rack stuff that's going on here - but what I have in mind will be cheap, compact and will suit my needs. Waiting for all the parts to arrive then I'll start building it up. Should be ready next weekend. Certainly won't be a match for tonyf's funk trunk!

I was handed an alpine white version of one of these last night in the rehearsal room to try it out by the owner (of the studio and the bass). Put the Volume on full (of course) tone wide open and capacitor setting on 5000. Wow!!! This would cut through any mix. Fantastic and very playable bass. Got gas again!

Research complete - creative thinking engaged vs do I really understand electrics vs how compact can I go - culminating in a (hopefully) workable compromise! Parts on order and looking forward to getting on with this project. Never had rack gas before. Photos to be posted when I've finished fannying around with the soldering iron!

That looks REALLY neat. I've had to shelve the idea for a while due to some unexpected household [s]expences[/s] opportunities coming in. I have an old 4u rack that I could use for this but i'm going to buy a new one with a smaller depth that will be neater and more compact. Looking at your power supply, it looks like you have fed both from the same powercon? Very, very impressed with what you & Pete have done here!

Also I would add - enjoy it.

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be! I started out on a Satellite Jazz copy in the late 70's. Moved it on years ago and progressed to much better basses. No regrets whatsoever.

Fantastic - thanks Russ - done some research and some creative thinking and have hatched a plan. I think I'll go for the 4u option and start drilling - more than likely into the blanking plate of the iem transmitter (the bit that the aerial screws into). I'll procure the bits needed and get busy with the soldering iron. Rack porn photos will be posted in due course. Thanks for taking the time to give me the steer with this.

Damn that XR18/IEM set up looks good. I really like the power strip idea and want to do the same myself. Was this purchased as a unit or did you make it up yourself? If purchased could you please share the detais so I can look into making a puchase or if made details of the components used and where they came from. Do you have photos of the rear? Don't want much do I
Brilliant gig last night at Nottingham arena. Almost a spiritual experience as this band (well, Jeff anyway) have been a backdrop to most of my formative years listening to music. Considering how many instruments and vocal mics the sound engineers had to contend with the mix was first rate, as good as I've ver heard it in that venue. Won't put any set spoilers in as this was only the second night of the tour and I know there are others here who have tickets for upcoming shows. You won't be disappointed on last night's showing.
I saw them in Manchester last night and echo Kevb's excellent summary of the gig he went to. Sound was superb - best I've heard in the arena and the visuals were very impressive. The quality of musicianship was as you would expect - outstanding. Only downside - with an audience of advancing years the queue for the bogs were challenging! Top night. Hope others that have tickets for the rest of the tour enjoy it as much as I did.

Were pub/smaller venue bands quieter in the past?
mr zed replied to Twincam's topic in General Discussion
When I first started playing we used a hire a 150 watt 4 channel mixer amp and a couple of speakers for the vocals for each gig. No instruments through - the backline and drum levels were set to each other and the vocals introduced to match the music. The difference between then and now was attitude and expectation. We were a band playing in a pub. We set up at one end and if people wanted to watch the band they used to come closer and get involved. Now, we mic up to make sure everyone in the pub can hear us where ever they are. People's expectations have changed - they want a major gig experience in the Dog and Duck (myself included) and we want to give it to them. -
I learned this a long time ago.
Forgot about the TE 300 watt smx 4 x 12 combo that I used to own. WAY too loud and way too heavy so it had to go. Great tone though that would slice right through the mix. -

Watts are not a measure of volume, they are a measure of power. You need to be looking at the SPL. I swear my 900 watt class d Genz amp is not as loud as the 300 watt Mesa Walkabout I used to own. -
I think Fender Jazz Basses are incredibly hit and miss though - I've played loads of post-2012 American Standards now and I'd say the hit rate is around 1 in 5 for finding a good one and maybe 1 in 15 for one I'd actually buy. Whenever i go to Absolute Music in Poole, I always grab their US Standards and am always amazed at how Fender can make the same model bass with such big differences in feel, weight and sound. I played a red/RW, OW/RW, black/RW and 3TSB/RW US Standard a couple of Sunday's back and I'd personally class all four as duds. The OW/RW, red/RW and black/RW all sounded a bit rubbish while the 3TSB/RW sounded great but weighed 11lb 4oz. Thankfully the gent who bought my 2013 US Standard kindly agreed to sell my old bass back to me.
Here is your problem - the OW/maple are the best sounding American Standards.
